Primary cilia in the basal cells of equine epididymis: a serendipitous finding.

Occurrence of a solitary cilium was an unexpected discovery while studying the ultrastructure of epididymal epithelium in equidae. Primary cilia were detected in epididymal basal cells of all individuals of the equines studied - horses, donkey and mules - independently from age and tract of the duct, emerging from the basal cell surface and insinuating into the intercellular spaces. More rarely solitary cilia occurred also at the luminal surface of the principal cells. The ciliary apparatus was constituted by a structurally typical basal body continuous with the finger-like ciliary shaft exten…

Clinical Presentation and Diagnosis of Multisystemic Eosinophilic Epitheliotropic Disease in a Miniature Donkey: A Case Report.

A 21-year-old miniature donkey gelding was evaluated for pruritus, inappetence, hypertriglyceridemia, and alopecia of 2 weeks' duration. Hematology showed moderate eosinophilia, severe hypertriglyceridemia, and moderately increased liver enzyme activities. Cytologic evaluation of peritoneal fluid identified an eosinophilic transudate. The donkey was treated with antihistamines, anthelmintics, IV fluids with dextrose as a constant rate infusion, and insulin. The miniature donkey was euthanized because of the development of laminitis. Lesions associated with multisystemic eosinophilic epitheliot

Enteric associated T-cell lymphoma in a mule.

A 25-year-old female mule weighing 336 kg was referred with a history of lethargy, abdominal discomfort, anorexia, and constipation in the previous 24 hours. On admission, decreased intestinal borborygmi and distended small intestinal loops were detected by auscultation and rectal palpation, respectively. On rectal examination a firm, irregular surface, and pedunculated mass were detected in the middle-caudal region of the abdomen. Transrectal ultrasonography revealed the mass was highly vascularized with heterogeneous tissue density. On exploratory celiotomy two neoplastic masses were observe

Gastrointestinal Parasitism in Przewalski Horses (Equus ferus przewalskii).

PURPOSE: Przewalski's horse (Equus ferus przewalskii) is a subspecies of Equus ferus classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), whose gastrointestinal (GI) parasitism has been studied in different populations, in situ and ex situ, during the last decades. We aimed to summarize the information available on the subject. METHODS: In this review, we collected information from distinct published literature, interpreted it, compared it and related the Przewalski's horse biology and ecology with different findings. RESULTS: Many similarities can be found

Polarotactic tabanids find striped patterns with brightness and/or polarization modulation least attractive: an advantage of zebra stripes.

The characteristic striped appearance of zebras has provoked much speculation about its function and why the pattern has evolved, but experimental evidence is scarce. Here, we demonstrate that a zebra-striped horse model attracts far fewer horseflies (tabanids) than either homogeneous black, brown, grey or white equivalents. Such biting flies are prevalent across Africa and have considerable fitness impact on potential mammalian hosts. Besides brightness, one of the likely mechanisms underlying this protection is the polarization of reflected light from the host animal. We show that the attrac

Infectivity rate and transmission potential of Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum ticks for Babesia equi infection.

The infectivity rate of Babesia equi in the salivary glands of Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum was assessed. The hungry nymphs were fed on a donkey experimentally infected with B. equi. The engorged dropped-off nymphs were collected at different levels of parasitaemia and kept in BOD incubator. After ecdysis, the hungry adults were prefed on rabbits for different time intervals, thereafter the salivary glands were dissected out and acini were examined after methyl green pyronin (MGP) staining. A total of 134 male and 139 female ticks were dissected out. Average infected acini per tick were foun

Multiple cesarean section in Jenny.

BACKGROUND: Jenny dystocia occurs very rarely and is associated mainly with postural defects due to long fetal extremities. However, the management of dystocia in equines is relatively difficult compared with that in other large animals. Owing to the absence of well-described published papers on cesarean section in donkeys, this condition remain life-threatening after unsuccessful surgical intervention. PATIENT PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old Jenny with a difficult birth due to a previous car accident presented for 3 consecutive years at different stages of labor onset. Upon early presentation, th

Fasciola hepatica in donkeys from southern Texas, USA.

Fasciola hepatica is a trematode parasite with a global distribution found in various mammalian hosts, most notably ruminants. It is associated with hepatic lesions including necrosis and inflammation, as well as can increase the risk of secondary bacterial infections. There is a lack of reports of fasciolosis in equids in North America. This report documents the pre- and postmortem findings of two cases of chronic fasciolosis in donkeys from southern Texas, United States. Grossly, left hepatic lobe atrophy and concurrent right lobe hypertrophy was observed. Histologic examination of the liver

Ultrasonographic and histopathologic features associated with common ocular diseases in donkeys (Equus asinus).

There is a lack of reports describing ultrasonographic and histopathologic features of ocular diseases in donkeys. The present study aimed to document ultrasonographic and histopathologic changes associated with common ocular diseases in donkeys. The study included 45 donkeys (64 eyes) with ocular diseases that had reached the end of their working lives and requested to be used for educational and research purposes. Complete clinical, ophthalmic, ultrasonographic, gross pathologic and histopathologic examinations were included. Ocular abnormalities were documented, tabulated, and analyzed. Sev

Disseminated Hemangiosarcoma in a Mare Mule.

An 8-year-old mare mule was presented with a facial mass and history of anorexia, unilateral epistaxis and purulent nasal discharge. The facial mass was encountered from the ventral to the lateral right canthus of the eye up to the facial crest. Thoracic ultrasonography showed five rounded masses. A standing CT under sedation was performed revealing a huge extension and infiltration on surrounding tissues. Due to the extension, type of lesions, outcome and suspicion of metastasis, the owner chose to euthanize the patient. Necropsy confirmed the presence of tumoral lesions spread into the lungs

Detection of asinine gammaherpesviruses in association with pulmonary fibrosis in free-ranging donkeys.

A mortality event among recently captured feral donkeys (Equus asinus) occurred in south-central Utah in 2016. The deaths were sporadic, and clinical signs were indicative of respiratory disease, likely associated with an infectious etiology. Ten of 13 donkeys autopsied had moderate-to-severe interstitial fibrosing pneumonia, and one had pyogranulomatous pneumonia. Consensus PCRs directed toward the DNA polymerase and DNA packaging terminase subunit 1 for herpesviruses were performed followed by sequencing of the PCR amplicons and phylogenetic analysis. Asinine herpesvirus 4 (AsHV4) and 5 (AsH

[Surgical treatment of a perforated cornea in a zebra].

Microsurgical procedures in zoo and wildlife animals are challenging because of the reduced perioperative sterility and postoperative care. This case report describes the positive result of the surgical treatment of a perforated corneal ulceration with prolapsed iris in an 18-year-old Grévy's zebra mare. The postoperative development and the results of the histomorphological examination 3.5 years after surgery are described.

Evaluation of chemical castration with calcium chloride versus surgical castration in donkeys: testosterone as an endpoint marker.

BACKGROUND: For the last few years, researchers have been interested in developing a method for chemical sterilization which may be a better alternative to surgical castration. An ideal chemical sterilant would be one that effectively arrests spermatogenesis and androgenesis as well as libido with absence of toxic or other side effects. Calcium chloride in various solutions and concentrations has been tested in many animal species, but few studies have been evaluated it in equines as a chemical sterilant. So, the objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of chemical castrat

Field efficacy of eprinomectin against the sucking louse Haematopinus asini on naturally infested donkeys.

A trial was conducted to assess the efficacy of eprinomectin (EPR) against the sucking louse Haematopinus asini on naturally infested donkeys. Parasitological investigations were performed on fifteen animals. On day 0, donkeys received EPR pour-on at the manufacturer's recommended cattle dose. Louse counts were performed on days -1, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49 and 56 at seven predilection sites on the skin of each donkey. EPR was completely effective (100%) from day 7, until the end of the study. Clinically no adverse reactions were observed in any of donkeys treated. EPR was considered to be 10

Seroepidemiological evidence for the possible presence of Babesia (Theileria) equi and Babesia caballi infections in donkeys in western Xinjiang, China.

The prevalence of Babesia (Theileria) equi and B. caballi infections in donkeys in western Xinjiang China was investigated. In total, 93 serum samples were randomly taken from donkeys in the Kashi and Ili areas, and examined for B. equi and B. caballi infections by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays using recombinant antigens. Of the 93 samples, 9 (9.6%) and 36 (38.7%) samples were positive for B. equi infection and B. caballi infection, respectively. In addition, 2 (2.2%) samples were positive for both B. equi and B. caballi infections. These results indicate that equine babesiosis might be e

NGS-based detection and differentiation of Entamoeba in Algerian wildlife and domestic animals.

This study investigated the distribution and genetic diversity of Entamoeba in 217 faecal samples from mammals, birds, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates sampled across Algeria. By next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based metabarcoding of SSU rDNA, an overall positivity rate of 13 % (n = 29/217) was observed, with positive cases limited to five host families: Bovidae, Camelidae, Equidae, Cervidae, and Caviidae, all of which are herbivores. From the 34 established cluster consensus sequences, we identified one species: Entamoeba bovis, two ribosomal lineages (RL1 and RL8), thr…
