UNLABELLED: Erythema multiforme is an inflammatory skin and mucosal disease mainly related to infectious agents such as Herpes simplex virus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, though it can also be "idiopathic". The characteristic skin lesions are typical or atypical acral raised target lesions. The oral mucosa can be affected, alone or in combination with other mucosal/cutaneous sites, sometimes causing extreme pain, severely impacting food intake, and warranting hospitalization. A comprehensive understanding of erythema multiforme clinical characteristics, triggering agents, and differential diagnosis …

Erythema nodosum (EN) is the most frequently occurring form of acute panniculitis. It is characterized by painful red to livid raised nodules or bumps that typically occur symmetrically in the shin area. The cause of EN is often a reaction of the immune system to various triggers including infections, inflammatory diseases or medications. In approximately half of the cases no trigger can be identified. After treatment of the underlying pathology EN is typically self-limiting.

BACKGROUND: Erythema nodosum can be associated with a number of systemic diseases. There is, however, a paucity of information in the pediatric literature on this condition. The purpose of this article is to familiarize pediatricians with the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of erythema nodosum.
DATA SOURCES: A PubMed search was completed in Clinical Queries using the key terms "erythema nodosum".
RESULTS: Clinically, erythema nodosum presents with a sudden onset of painful, erythematous, subcutaneous nodules mainly localized to the pretibial areas. Lesions are usually bilateral and symm…

An active duty male Soldier presents to your clinic with concerns of blister-like lesions on both hands and feet several weeks after receiving immunizations. He is diagnosed with erythema multiforme (EM), a hypersensitivity reaction that is typically self-resolving. This article reviews the etiologies, pathophysiology, course, diagnosis, and treatment of erythema multiforme.

Erythema nodosum is an acute inflammatory dermatosis characterized by painful nodules which are generally symmetrical and non ulcerative and are mainly located to the extensor surface of the lower legs. The nodules, due to septal panniculitis, are often accompanied by fever and resolve without permanent sequelae. Arthralgia occurs in more than 50% of patients and begins during the eruptive phase or precedes the eruption by 2-4 weeks. Erythema nodosum is presumed to be a hypersensitivity reaction and may occur in association with several systemic diseases or drug therapies, or it may be idiopat…

The article summarizes the latest knowledge about the etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnostic procedures and therapy of erythema migrans (EM), a cutaneous form of Borrelia infection. The sole focus on this clinical entity is intentional since EM is the most common clinical involvement in Lyme borreliosis (LB) in the Czech Republic (CR). New genospecies from the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex, B. lusitaniae and B. spielmanii, as etiologic agents are reported. Although there are no commercial tests available yet for their detection, ticks are demonstrably infect…

Erythema nodosum is the most frequent clinicopathologic variant of panniculitis. The process is a cutaneous reaction that may be associated with a wide variety of disorders, including infections, sarcoidosis, rheumatologic diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases, medications, autoimmune disorders, pregnancy, and malignancies. Histopathologically, erythema nodosum is the stereotypical example of a mostly septal panniculitis with no vasculitis. The composition of the inflammatory infiltrate in the septa varies with age of the lesion. Treatment of erythema nodosum should be directed to the underlyi…

Erythema migrans (EM) is the most common objective manifestation of Lyme disease, accounting for about 90% of cases. Establishing the diagnosis of EM is important because appropriate treatment with oral antibiotics at an early stage of infection with Borrelia burgdorferi results in excellent outcomes. This article includes a discussion of the epidemiology of EM and its clinical, differential, and laboratory diagnosis. The treatment of EM and the prevention of Lyme disease are also discussed.

Erythema nodosum (EN) is the most common form of panniculitis. It is characterized by the presence of rounded or oval, slightly raised, nonulcerative painful red nodules in the skin and subcutaneous fatty tissue, 1 to 6 cm in diameter, sometimes coalescing. They tend to be symmetrical in distribution and are usually located bilaterally on the lower extremities, particularly on the anterior tibial surface, although they may also involve the ankles, the lower parts of the thighs, and the forearms.
