A definite relation between the intensity of Ancylostoma duodenale and haematological changes in dogs were studied. Red blood cells from normal persons and from patients with reticulocytosis were tested for their calmodulin content. Elevated calmodulin correlated with high reticulocyte counts, rather than with any specific disorder. The correlation between reticulocyte content and elevated calmodulin was further tested by fractionating the erythrocytes from 12 patients into reticulocyte-rich and reticulocyte-poor fractions. In the samples from each patient, erythrocytic calmodulin increased with increasing reticulocyte count.

A relationship between esterase positive and esterase negative lymphocytes in peripheral blood of a homogenous group of one-year old healthy bulls of NCB breed was found. Splenic size and function was assessed in eight patients with celiac disease and coexisting malignancy (six had small bowel lymphoma and two gastric adenocarcinoma). The size of the spleen was reduced in four of seven patients as seen at autopsy or radionucleotide scanning. The ring-stage survival assay (RSA) is a powerful tool for phenotyping artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum but requires experienced microscopists to count viable parasites among 10,000 erythrocytes in Giemsa-stained thin blood smears. Here we describe a rapid flow cytometric assay that accurately counts viable parasites among 250,000 erythrocytes in suspension. This method performs as well as light microscopy and can be used to standardize the collection of RSA data between research groups in laboratory and field settings.
