In this work, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/aqueous NaOH or KOH was introduced as an efficient reaction system for rapidly synthesizing CEs by transesterification. L-α-amino-methylenecyclopropyl propionic acid (Hypoglycin A, HGA) has been found to be the toxic compound in fruits of the Sapindaceae family causing acute intoxication when ingested as food or feed. Clinical symptoms are consistent with acquired multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD). We described herein a selective method to prepare α-organylthio esters and α-organylthio ketones by the reaction of β-keto esters with sodium S-benzyl sulfurothioate or sodium S-alkyl sulfurothioate (Bunte salts) under basic conditions in toluene as the solvent at 100 °C. An efficient method of producing quinine derivatives via reaction of acylation with 4,5-dichloroisothiazole-3-, 5-arylisoxazole-3-, adamantane- and hydrochlorides of pyridine-3- and pyridine-4-carbonyl chlorides was developed. All synthesized compounds were tested for antiviral, antimicrobial and analgesic activity. Esters are of widespread use for protecting carboxylic acids in organic synthesis. However, methods to cleave esters often employ harsh conditions. Herein, we report a new and mild method for the reductive cleavage of 2,2,2-trichloroethylesters (TCE esters). Our radical method employs Cp(2)TiCl as an electron transfer catalyst and Zn dust as stoichiometric reducing agent. It avoids the use of strong Brønstedt-acids as well as aqueous conditions and can be carried out at room temperature.
