Effect of cyanobacterial bloom proliferation on antibiotic resistance genes in the sediments of a eutrophic lake.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) represent an emerging pollutant of increasing concern. In this study, we analyzed the composition and spatiotemporal variation of ARGs in the sediments of eutrophic Chaohu Lake, China, using a metagenomic method. A total of 22 ARGs and 199 ARGs subtypes were detected, with the most prevalent subtypes being multidrug (57.720 %) and rifamycin (21.781 %). A higher abundance of ARGs in Chaohu Lake was observed (p < 0.05) during winter and spring owing to multiple factors, including variations in seasonal inputs and hydraulic conditions, occurrence of cyanobacteri

Sediment amplifies organic matter cycling and nutrients feedback in eutrophic lake zones.

Eutrophication alters the composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in lakes, yet its impact on particulate (POM) and sedimentary organic matter (SOM) remains poorly explored, particularly in large shallow lake systems. Here, we investigated spatial variation in DOM, POM, and SOM across different eutrophic zones in a large shallow lake using optical spectroscopy and ultrahigh-resolution Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Compared to the light-eutrophic region, middle-eutrophic region exhibited elevated dissolved organic carbon, chromophoric DOM, and fl…

The underestimated role of manganese in modulating the nutrient structure in a eutrophic seasonally-stratified reservoir.

Accumulation and subsequent release of nutrients have great potential to trigger algal blooms in lakes and reservoirs. We conducted high vertical resolution (2 m interval) monitoring at ∼monthly intervals over a year for hydrological parameters, Chl-a, ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3-) and different species of phosphorus (P) and manganese (Mn) in a 40-meter-deep subtropical reservoir (Shanmei Reservoir) in Fujian, southern China. In this seasonally stratified reservoir featured with high nutrient loading, the consistent trend in the ratio of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) to dissolved inorga

Spatiotemporal Patterns in pCO2 and Nutrient Concentration: Implications for the CO2 Variations in a Eutrophic Lake.

Lakes are considered sentinels of terrestrial environmental change. Nevertheless, our understanding of the impact of catchment anthropogenic activities on nutrients and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2, an important parameter in evaluating CO2 levels in water) is still restrained by the scarcity of long-term observations. In this study, spatiotemporal variations in nutrient concentrations (total nitrogen: TN, total phosphorus: TP, nitrate: NO3--N, and ammonium: NH4+-N) pCO2 in Taihu Lake were analyzed from 1992 to 2006, along with the gross domestic product (GDP) and wastewater dis

Interfacial oxygen nanobubbles reduce methylmercury production ability of sediments in eutrophic waters.

Eutrophication can induce hypoxia/anoxia and rich organic matter at the sediment-water interface in surface waters. When eutrophic waters are impacted with mercury (Hg) pollution, methylmercury (MeHg) production ability (MPA) of surface sediment would increase and more MeHg might be produced. To tackle this risk, this study firstly collected samples of surface sediment and overlying water from a typical eutrophic lake-Taihu Lake. Then from a sediment-water simulation system, we demonstrated that eutrophic waters were able to methylate Hg spontaneously, and that sediment is the major Hg sink in…

Community Biological Ammonium Demand: A Conceptual Model for Cyanobacteria Blooms in Eutrophic Lakes.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) are enhanced by anthropogenic pressures, including excessive nutrient (nitrogen, N, and phosphorus, P) inputs and a warming climate. Severe eutrophication in aquatic systems is often manifested as non-N2-fixing CyanoHABs (e.g., Microcystis spp.), but the biogeochemical relationship between N inputs/dynamics and CyanoHABs needs definition. Community biological ammonium (NH4+) demand (CBAD) relates N dynamics to total microbial productivity and NH4+ deprivation in aquatic systems. A mechanistic conceptual model was constructed by combining nutrient…

Floating rice-culture system for nutrient remediation and feed production in a eutrophic lake.

The increased inputs of nutrients have been demonstrated to be a major contributing factor to the eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs which can lead to the production of harmful algal/cyanobacterial blooms and deleteriously affect the aesthetics of water-bodies. Floating plant-culture systems have been widely used for the ecological remediation of eutrophic water in a cost-effective manner. We investigated the applicability of Korean japonica rice variety 'Nampyeong' in a floating-culture system in a eutrophic lake for nutrient uptake and biomass production. Chemical and organic compound co…

Research and application of in-situ control technology for sediment rehabilitation in eutrophic water bodies.

Phosphorus (P) is often the limiting nutrient for algal growth, and P in sediments can be released under suitable conditions. To control P release, in-situ control technology with lanthanum (La) modified bentonite clay (Phoslock(®)) was proposed and its effectiveness was tested and evaluated both in laboratory and field trials. The results of static and dynamic simulation experiments under different environmental conditions showed that with the application rate of Phoslock(®) at 0.5 kg/m(2), the orthophosphate (PO(4)-P) concentration of the overlying water decreased to a low level (≤0.02 mg/L)

Seasonal differences in bacterial community composition following nutrient additions in a eutrophic lake.

We examined the effects of nutrient amendments on epilimnetic freshwater bacteria during three distinct periods in the eutrophic Lake Mendota's seasonal cycle (spring overturn, summer stratification and autumn overturn). Microcosm treatments enriched solely with phosphorus containing compounds did not result in a large bacterial community composition (BCC) change or community activity response (assessed via alkaline phosphatase activity, APA) relative to the controls during any season. Treatments enriched with carbon- and nitrogen-containing compounds resulted in a dramatic BCC change and a la

Interacting effects of sulphate pollution, sulphide toxicity and eutrophication on vegetation development in fens: a mesocosm experiment.

Both eutrophication and SO4 pollution can lead to higher availability of nutrients and potentially toxic compounds in wetlands. To unravel the interaction between the level of eutrophication and toxicity at species and community level, effects of SO4 were tested in nutrient-poor and nutrient-rich fen mesocosms. Biomass production of aquatic and semi-aquatic macrophytes and colonization of the water layer increased after fertilization, leading to dominance of highly competitive species. SO4 addition increased alkalinity and sulphide concentrations, leading to decomposition and additional eutrop…

Regulation of eutrophication susceptibility in oligohaline regions of a northern Gulf of Mexico estuary, Mobile Bay, Alabama.

The factors regulating the eutrophication susceptibility of seven oligohaline regions in the sub-estuaries of Mobile Bay, Alabama were examined in a comparative analysis. The oligohaline regions differed primarily by the dominant land-use of their upstream watersheds, with two of the regions being primarily urban, two being primarily agricultural, and three being primarily forested. A stepwise model selection procedure was used to determine a suite of multiple regression models describing eutrophication response, in terms of a chlorophyll a (chla) on a sampling event basis, in relation to estu…

"Assessment of potential eutrophication in coastal waters of Gran Canaria: Impact on plankton community under CO2 depletion".

Population growth in coastal tourist areas is leading to enhanced waste production, raising concerns about potential nutrient release increases and the resulting impact on marine ecosystems through eutrophication. Knowledge of the specific impacts of eutrophication on plankton communities in many of these regions is limited, highlighting the need for further research and appropriate environmental management strategies. To help address these gaps, we conducted a 30-day mesocosm study in the coastal waters of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, a major European tourist destination, and the third most …

Adsorption of humic acids to lake sediments: Compositional fractionation, inhibitory effect of phosphate, and implications for lake eutrophication.

Humic acid (HA) and phosphate interactions play a vital role in the biogeochemical cycle of carbon and nutrients and thus the trophic state … o replace phosphate in sediments. We propose a novel mechanism to explain the legacy effect of lake eutrophication. That is, as lakes shift from a macrophyte-dominated state to more eutrophic, algae-dominated state, increasing algae-derived organic compounds can promote the release of phosphate from sediments, forming a positive feedback loop that sustains inter …

Modelling the impact of diffusion and eutrophic conditions on fungal parasite transmission in poorly-mixed waters.

Fungal parasites are widespread in aquatic ecosystems and play an important role in regulating plankton populations by obligately infecting zooplankton hosts and inducing host mortality. In this study, we develop a transmission dynamics model to describe the interactions among phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fungal parasites within an unstirred chemostat environment. The dynamical properties of the model are investigated, including dissipativity, the existence and stability of steady states, and uniform persistence under suitable conditions on the principal eigenvalues and the basic reproducti

Deciphering the composition and bioavailability of dissolved organic matter in rivers discharging into a temperate eutrophic bay.

The riverine transport of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a crucial link between terrestrial and marine carbon pools, yet studies on the composition and fate of DOM in medium- and small-sized rivers remain limited, hindering a comprehensive understanding of the role of riverine input in coastal carbon cycling. This study focused on rivers discharging into a temperate eutrophic bay in the South Yellow Sea, Haizhou Bay (HZB), and assessed the spatial-temporal variations in the concentrations, composition, and bioavailability of DOM through field investigations and laboratory incubation experim

Sulfate Reduction Drives Elevated Methylmercury Formation in the Water Column of a Eutrophic Freshwater Lake.

Mercury (Hg) contamination of aquatic food webs is controlled in part by the formation and accumulation of toxic and bioaccumulative methylmercury (MeHg). MeHg production is mediated by metabolically diverse microorganisms carrying the hgcAB gene pair, while the demethylation reaction is mediated by several biotic and abiotic processes. However, the relative importance of these two processes on MeHg accumulation and the environmental factors that influence them are poorly characterized, especially in eutrophic environments. In this study, both Hg methylation and MeHg demethylation in a eutroph

Utilizing a granulated coal bottom ash and oyster shells for nutrient removal in eutrophic sediments.

Various in-situ capping materials have been studied to remediate contaminated sediments for sustaining a healthy ecosystem in a coastal area. We developed Granulated coal bottom ash and oyster shells (GBO) with different mixing ratios of OS. Pyrolyzed and grounded coal bottom ash and oyster shells were used to produce GBO, which the main chemical elements were analogous to cement. The nutrient-removal abilities of GBO were evaluated through long-term mesocosm experiments. It was found that GBO was an effective in-situ capping material for remediation of eutrophic coastal sediments, decreasing
