Clinical Nurse Specialists' Perceptions of Competency and Self-Efficacy in Evidence-Based Practice and Implementation Science.

BACKGROUND: Research and demonstration projects have shown that the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role is uniquely suited to lead implementation of evidence-based clinical practice changes for improved outcomes and reduced costs to healthcare systems. CNS practice competencies closely align with the design, development, and implementation of evidence-based practice change. National data on CNS's knowledge and use of implementation science to guide EBP implementation is lacking. AIMS: A CNS professional organization implementation science team and a university evidence-based practice center

Effectiveness of a Learning Path in the Acquisition of Evidence-Based Practice Competencies by Nurses: A Protocol for a Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) positively impacts health safety and quality while also empowering nursing as a discipline. A useful strategy for promoting EBP is to build learning paths adapted to the individuality of nurses. These elements establish the framework for effective learning, determining the availability of specific content at certain times and influencing the design of learning objects to ensure optimal efficacy in the teaching-learning process. It is essential to identify effective strategies in evidence-based nursing education to advance EBP and thereby enh…

Formulating evidence-based guidelines for certified nurse-midwives and certified midwives attending home births.

INTRODUCTION: Implementing national home birth guidelines for certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs) in the United States may facilitate a common approach to safe home birth practices. Guidelines are evidence-based care recommendations for specified clinical situations that can be modified by individual providers to meet specific client needs. METHODS: Following a review of home birth guidelines from multiple countries, a set of home birth practices guidelines for US CNMs/CMs was drafted. Fifteen American Midwifery Certification Board, Inc. (AMCB)-certified home birth mi

Nurse-Led Implementation of Evidence-Based Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Care in Pediatrics: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) complications persist in pediatric settings, creating an urgent need for systematic nurse-led practice change. OBJECTIVE: This study explored how nurses facilitated the implementation of an updated evidence-based PIVC insertion protocol through the lens of the integrated Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (i-PARIHS) framework. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was used. Written reflective narratives from 9 nurses were analyzed using hybrid thematic analysis, deductively mapped to i-PARIHS constructs. RESU

Socioeconomic Inequalities in the Transition to Nursing Home Care: Longitudinal Evidence from a Population Based Study in Switzerland.

Lower socioeconomic status (SES) is linked to earlier nursing home admission, but it is unclear if this remains true after accounting for health needs. This study examines SES-related inequalities in nursing home admission, controlling for health needs in an area of Switzerland with universal home-based care for older adults. Data were from the Lausanne Cohort 65+ study, including 3650 participants. SES was measured by education level, occupational class, and receiving means-tested benefits (a proxy for low income). Health needs were assessed with a set of physical and mental health variables.

Organizational transformation elements for evidence-based practice by hospital nursing staff: a qualitative study using 7-S framework.

BACKGROUND: Existing models that promote the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) give a fragmented picture of the process and factors. This means that a comprehensive view of the elements necessary for an organization to implement sustained EBP is lacking. Clarifying organizational transformation elements using the 7-S framework (Styles, Superordinate goals, Skills, Staff, Strategy, Systems, Structure) allows the organizational conditions to be comprehensively assessed, guiding transformation efforts toward sustaining EBPs. In addition, while ward-level group learning supports EBP

[Tracheal rupture treated with robotic surgery: the importance of evidence-based practice in nursing management. A case report].

. Tracheal rupture treated with robotic surgery: the importance of evidence-based practice in nursing management. A case report. Tracheal rupture is a very rare condition with high morbidity and mortality. While it has a multifactorial etiology, however it occurs most frequently after orotracheal intubation. The case of a 76-year-old woman who underwent out-of-hospital orotracheal intubation for severe respiratory failure due to a state of coma is described. The patient suddenly developed a subcutaneous emphysema extending from the chest to the skull due to tracheal laceration. The management

Evidence-based management of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting: a position statement from a European cancer nursing forum.

Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is a common, but now often overlooked side effect of cancer treatment, and one that can be largely prevented through the implementation of international evidence-based guidelines. The European CINV Forum, comprising nurses from France, Germany, Portugal, Spain and the UK, discussed the use of CINV preventive strategies in routine practice, and the factors that affect optimal delivery of antiemetic therapies. Based on these discussions, they developed a series of recommendations for optimal, evidence-based management of CINV. These state that all

Reduction of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections Through the Use of an Evidence-Based Nursing Algorithm and the Implementation of Shift Nursing Rounds: A Quality Improvement Project.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are the most common hospital-acquired infections. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to successfully implement a nurse-led evidence-based practice change designed to reduce CAUTIs in a cardiac intensive care and step-down unit. The QI project was implemented using a convenience sample of patients admitted to the cardiac intensive care and step-down unit.Evaluation data were collected 3 months preimplementation and 9 months postimplementation. We used Wick's Check-Plan-Do-Check-Act model of continuous QI to guide the pr
