Variance of vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) has been thought to originate from sacculus. The variance of this potential and the effectiveness of the adjustments of pInII amplitudes using average muscle tonus of ipsilateral sternocleidomastoid muscle were evaluated. In addition, clinical application of VEMP was examined in patients with acoustic tumors (ATs) and vestibular neurolabyrinthitis (VNL). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective evaluation of the VEMP in 18 normal volunteers and 6 patients. METHODS: Variance and left-right difference of each parameter, including pI latency,

Auditory evoked potentials in vitiligo patients.

There is convincing evidence that vitiligo is a systemic disorder influencing the whole pigmentary system, including melanocytes in the inner ear. Cochlear melanocytes and also melanin-containing cellular elements of the auditory system may be affected in vitiligo and interfere with the conduction of action potentials. We conducted a prospective clinical trial to determine hearing status and auditory evoked potentials in 50 patients affected by vitiligo and compared the results with those of 50 healthy controls. I, III, V latencies and amplitudes and I-III, III-V, I-V interpeak latencies were …

Somatosensory evoked potentials in aphasic patients.

The purpose of this study was to employ evoked potentials to evaluate the function of the somatosensory system in a group of right hemiplegic aphasic patients in whom conventional physical examination was inapplicable. Bilateral somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in response to stimulation of the median nerve were recorded in 20 patients, and unilateral recordings were performed with 20 healthy, aged, matched controls. The major abnormality, present in 13 patients, was absence or reduction of the amplitude of the cortical components N19 and P22 in the lesioned side of the brain. Consequent…

Multichannel visual evoked potentials in migraine.

Multichannel recordings of visual evoked potentials (VEPs) have proved to be useful in the evaluation of visual field defects. We studied the topographic distribution of transient VEPs in 15 migraine patients (8 with visual aura and 7 without) and 15 age-matched controls during the migraine-free interval. All the subjects included in the study had normal visual fields. VEPs were recorded from 9 electrodes placed on the posterior scalp. Stimuli were full-field and hemifield reversing square wave grating patterns of medium spatial frequency (4 c/deg). The groups did not show significant differen…

Auditory evoked potentials in Rett syndrome.

This study was designed to assess auditory function in subjects with Rett syndrome, a rare neurologic disorder that is characterized by progressive symptoms of dementia, ataxia, respiratory disorder, and communication disorder. Auditory evoked potentials, including the auditory brainstem response (ABR), middle latency response (MLR), and late vertex response (LVR), were recorded in 36 subjects with Rett syndrome. Results showed a systematic decline in auditory function from the peripheral to the central auditory system, with normal ABR in all subjects, normal MLR in 50 percent of subjects, and…

Auditory evoked potentials in epileptic patients.

Auditory brain stem response (ABR) and middle latency response (MLR) were recorded in 49 epileptic patients. Responses were evoked and recorded at 90 dB nHL down to threshold. A statistically significant number of epileptic patients showed elevated ABR (30.1%) and MLR (40.7%) thresholds, even though their pure-tone audiograms showed normal hearing sensitivity. Threshold elevation was more frequent in subjects with grand mal epilepsy compared to subjects with temporal lobe epilepsy reflecting poorer response in the former subgroup. Furthermore, chronicity of illness was significantly related to

Pain and tooth pulp evoked potentials.

The purpose of this study was to verify whether the late components (N 140) of TPEPs were a reliable index of pain intensity. In the group with acute pain, except for higher amplitudes of the second negative wave, the plateau phenomenon has been noted. Analgesic and placebo effects indicated that the method used offers more objective than subjective components, because the real value of amplitudes is about 10% of control values for analgesic and between 60 and 70% for placebo. Shorter latency periods were observed in all parts of evoked potentials in the patients suffering from trigeminal neur…

Sensory evoked potentials in Wilson's disease.

Somatosensory, brainstem auditory and pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials (SEP, BAEP and VEP) were studied in 16 patients with Wilson's disease and 16 family members. In 13 patients with neurological manifestations, median nerve stimulation elicited cervical potentials with normal N13 latency. Scalp-recorded components of the median and tibial SEPs were absent bilaterally in 1 patient and unilaterally in another. The median conduction time (N13 to N20 peaks) was bilaterally prolonged in 3 patients and unilaterally prolonged in 5. In the tibial SEPs from 9 patients with neurological sympt…

[Evoked potentials. Indications and diagnostic significance].

Visual, auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials are useful in the detection and localization of demyelinating lesions, which mainly cause a slowing of conduction and therefore a latency increase in the evoked potential. Primarily amplitude reductions or loss of the response are seen in partial or complete impulse conduction blocks due to a tumor e.g. Acoustic nerve tumors can be detected by AEP, orbit tumors or processes of the chiasm by VEP and spinal cord tumors by SEP. The use of evoked potentials for the evaluation of ophthalmologic disorders, for audiometry in children and for monito…

Evoked potentials in acute transverse myelopathy.

Evoked potential studies were undertaken in nine patients with acute transverse myelopathy three to 25 weeks after onset. The visual evoked potentials (VEP), brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) or somato-sensory evoked potentials (SEP) after median nerve stimulation were normal in all but one with prolonged latency of VEP. The SEP after tibial nerve stimulation was abnormal in six patients--in three, there was no cortical potential from either side (total conduction block); in two, there was a block on one side and a slightly delayed latency on the other; and in one patient there was …

Visual evoked potentials in spinocerebellar degenerations.

Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials were studied in 21 patients with spinocerebellar ataxias among whom 6 had Friedreich's ataxia, 10 had hereditary spastic ataxia and 5 had spinocerebellar degeneration with slow eye movements (olivopontocerebellar degeneration). The VEP abnormalities found in 4 cases of Friedreich's ataxia and one with spinocerebellar degeneration with slow eye movements, consisted of, bilaterally absent VEP in 3 patients and bilaterally abnormal responses with asymmetry in two. All the patients with spastic ataxia had normal VEP latencies. The N 70 - P 100 amplitudes, …

Evoked potentials in neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

Nerve conduction, EEG, visual evoked potentials, electroretinograms and somatosensory evoked potentials were investigated in 3 children with the Bielschowsky-Jansky-type and in 1 child diagnosed as Spielmeyer-Vogt-type of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. Electroretinographic responses were abolished in all of them. Electroencephalograms showed high amplitude, irregular delta-theta activity and spike- or polyspike-wave discharges without localized preponderance. As a characteristic feature for the Bielschowsky-Jansky type grossly enlarged evoked responses to single light flashes were recorded. S…

Reliability of Motor Evoked Potentials Induced by Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: The Effects of Initial Motor Evoked Potentials Removal.

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a useful tool for assessment of corticospinal excitability (CSE) changes in both healthy individuals and patients with brain disorders. The usefulness of TMS-elicited motor evoked potentials (MEPs) for the assessment of CSE in a clinical context depends on their intra-and inter-session reliability. This study aimed to evaluate if removal of initial MEPs elicited by using two types of TMS techniques influences the reliability scores and whether this effect is different in blocks with variable number of MEPs. METHODS: Twenty-three healthy…
