Growth of the thoracic aorta in the smoking population: The Danish Lung Cancer Screening Trial.

BACKGROUND: Although the descending aortic diameter is larger in smokers, data about thoracic aortic growth is missing. Our aim is to present the distribution of thoracic aortic growth in smokers and to compare it with literature of the general population. METHODS: Current and ex-smokers aged 50-70 years from the longitudinal Danish Lung Cancer Screening Trial, were included. Mean and 95th percentile of annual aortic growth of the ascending aortic (AA) and descending aortic (DA) diameters were calculated with the first and last non-contrast computed tomography scans during follow-up. Determin…

Increased exhaled nitric oxide in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role as an inflammatory mediator in the airways. Since chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterised by airway inflammation, a study was undertaken to determine NO levels in the exhaled air of patients with COPD. METHODS: Two groups of patients with clinically stable COPD were studied, 10 current smokers and 10 ex-smokers. Two control groups of healthy subjects consisting of 10 current smokers and 20 non-smokers were also studied. Exhaled NO levels were measured by the collection bag technique and NO chemiluminescence analyser. …

Mortality and morbidity burden associated with smoking: evidence from a 1.6 million cohort in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Existing evidence on the disease burden of smoking is often outdated and incomprehensive, particularly in Asia, which plays a pivotal role in the global tobacco control community. This study aimed to provide an updated and comprehensive estimate of the mortality and morbidity burden associated with smoking in Hong Kong. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adults with smoking status information recorded in the Hong Kong Hospital Authority database between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2012. Subjects were classified into never-smokers, ex-smokers, and current smokers.…

The smoking behaviors of incarcerated smokers.

To determine smoking behaviors, quit attempts, and cessation preferences among incarcerated smokers, a cross-sectional survey was given to a sample of inmates from three state prison facilities in the United States. A majority of Black smokers (62%) identified as smokers, and 38% identified as ex-smokers, as compared to 46.4 percent of smokers (and 53.6% of ex-smokers) in the non-Black group. There were significant differences in the number of cigarettes smoked per day with non-Black smokers smoking one pack (M = 20.44, standard deviation = 15.86) than Black smokers (M = 14.49, standard deviat…

Chest CT Airway and Vascular Measurements in Females with COPD or Long-COVID.

Chest CT provides a way to quantify pulmonary airway and vascular tree measurements. In patients with COPD, CT airway measurement differences in females are concomitant with worse quality-of-life and other outcomes. CT total airway count (TAC), airway lumen area (LA), and wall thickness (WT) also differ in females with long-COVID. Our objective was to evaluate CT airway and pulmonary vascular and quality-of-life measurements in females with COPD as compared to ex-smokers and patients with long-COVID. Chest CT was acquired 3-months post-COVID-19 infection in females with long-COVID for comparis…

Magnetic Resonance Neurography Reveals Smoking-Associated Decrease in Sciatic Nerve Structural Integrity in Type 2 Diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: It is controversially discussed in how far smoking contributes to diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance neurography (MRN) at 3 Tesla has been shown to provide objective values for structural nerve integrity in patients with T2D. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of cigarette smoking on structural nerve integrity in T2D. METHODS: This cross-sectional prospective cohort study investigated the structural integrity of the sciatic nerve in 10 smokers, 40 never-smokers, and 20 ex-smokers with T2D and 10 healt…

Tiotropium improves FEV1 in patients with COPD irrespective of smoking status.

This study evaluated whether the effect of tiotropium on the change in trough forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1), vs. placebo, is affected by smoking status. In a 3-month, double-blind study in 31 centres in Portugal, 311 (289 completed) patients were randomised to tiotropium 18 microg once daily or placebo. Baseline mean (standard deviation (SD)) FEV1 was 1.11 (0.39) l in the tiotropium group and 1.13 (0.39) l in the placebo group. Patients had an average smoking history of 55 (25.7) pack-years; 80 (26%) were smokers and 224 (74%) were ex-smokers. The primary end-point was change in mornin…

Behavioral and Genetic Factors Associated with Successful Long-Term Cessation in Persons with HIV Who Smoke Cigarettes.

BACKGROUND: Persons with HIV (PWH) smoke cigarettes at much higher rates than the general population in the US, and smoking is now the leading cause of death in US PWH. Efforts to control the tobacco use epidemic in PWH have met with limited success, and the factors associated with successful cessation are not well delineated. There is a particular dearth of knowledge regarding PWH ex-smokers who have successfully quit smoking cigarettes for the long term. METHODS: We pooled data from three separate sources of PWH smokers and ex-smokers (reporting complete abstinence for ≥ one year with bioch…
