Building community resilience: The City of Victoria's approach to climate change adaptation and extreme heat response.

The Pacific Northwest heat dome of 2021 exposed the need for increased planning and response measures by local governments, and the value of collaboration in preparedness, planning and response to extreme heat events. Recognising that extreme heat is becoming an increasingly significant threat, the City of Victoria has taken steps to improve its response to future events with a focus on developing strategies that provide resources and support to those most vulnerable in the community. The Province of British Columbia and regional health authorities have since provided crucial direction, resour…

Extreme Heat and Firearm Violence in New York City Public Housing: The Mitigating Role of Air Conditioning.

Higher outdoor temperatures are associated with greater incidence of firearm violence in urban areas in the United States. This study adds to the existing literature base by exploring the potential mitigating role of air conditioning (AC). The setting for this repeated-measures ecological cross-sectional study is New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments, which are known to experience disproportionate rates of firearm violence. We extracted data for 2012-2017 for two types of shooting events: all New York City (NYC) shootings and those in NYCHA housing. Negative binomial mixed-effec

Susceptibility of persons with schizophrenia to extreme heat: A critical review of physiological, behavioural, and social factors.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness affecting approximately 24 million people worldwide. Schizophrenia diagnosis is associated with more than double the all-cause mortality risk of the general population and a 13- to 15-year reduction in life expectancy, due to a myriad of intersecting factors and underlying causes. Persons with schizophrenia are particularly susceptible to the negative health effects of extreme heat, as demonstrated by the 2021 Western North America Heat Dome. During this event, schizophrenia was associated with a 3-fold increase in the odds of mortality in British Colum…

Environmental extreme heat exposure and blood pressure dysregulation in older hypertensive adults: Metabolomic evidence for biological plausibility.

Extreme heat events are intensifying under climate change, yet pathways linking heat exposure to blood pressure (BP) dysregulation in older hypertensive adults remain poorly defined. Here, we conducted a repeated-measures cohort study among 40 older adults (median age: 67.0 years) with hypertension in Tianjin, China, collecting BP measurements and fasting venous blood samples at baseline (June 2023; daily maximum temperature 24 °C) and following the first official heatwave warning (July 2023; 38 °C). High-temperature exposure was associated with significant increases in systolic BP (SBP: +11.9…

The secondary symbiont Arsenophonus improves thermal tolerance of Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphididae) exposed to extreme heat stress.

Bacterial endosymbionts are ubiquitous in insects and play a critical role in host ecology, including adaptability to thermal extremes. The … ected line exhibited significantly extended adult longevity compared with the A-deleted line. Under extreme heat stress (35 °C), the infected line surpassed the cured line in both longevity and fecundity. These results confirm the dependency of A. gossypii on Arsenophonus for a conditional fitness advantage at high temperatures, effectively broadening its ther …

Extreme heat and physical and mental health: A qualitative study with low-income women in South Texas.

Heat waves in the US are becoming more frequent, longer, and more intense due to climate change. South Texas is especially vulnerable because it is experiencing the highest increases in heat "danger days" nationally and has a high number of residents living in unincorporated neighborhoods known as colonias, which often lack basic infrastructure. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore how extreme heat affects the physical and mental health of Latina women who live in South Texas colonias. Focus groups with 18 women ages 20-70 revealed a cycle of physical and mental health consequen…

Environmental health during extreme heat: challenges for the practice of safe physical activity in childhood and adolescence.

This essay discusses evidence and evidence-based strategies to ensure the safety, well-being, and continuity of physical activity for children and adolescents during extreme heat. It emphasizes the adaptation of environments, professional training, and equity in public policies. High temperatures and sedentary behaviors are not isolated challenges, and they create a critical scenario for the health of children and adolescents when combined, with impacts ranging from thermal regulation to mental health, motor behavior, and risk of obesity. The increasing frequency of extreme heatwaves imposes a…

Call to action: recognize and prevent the effects of extreme heat on early childhood development and health.

The frequency and severity of heat waves are expected to worsen with climate change. Exposure to extreme heat, or prolonged unusually high temperatures, are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The fetus, infant, and young child are more sensitive to higher temperatures than older children and most adults given that they are rapidly developing. During pregnancy, exposure to extreme heat may result in dehydration, inflammation, and reduced blood flow in the placenta potentially triggering preterm birth and increased rates of stillbirth and low birth weight infants. Young children …

"Mothers get really exhausted!" The lived experience of pregnancy in extreme heat: Qualitative findings from Kilifi, Kenya.

Heat exposure in pregnancy is associated with a range of adverse health and wellbeing outcomes, yet research on the lived experience of pregnancy in high temperatures is lacking. We conducted qualitative research in 2021 in two communities in rural Kilifi County, Kenya, a tropical savannah area currently experiencing severe drought. Pregnant and postpartum women, their male spouses and mothers-in-law, community health volunteers, and local health and environment stakeholders were interviewed or participated in focus group discussions. Pregnant women described symptoms that are classically rega

Association of Extreme Heat Events With Hospital Admission or Mortality Among Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease.

IMPORTANCE: Extreme heat events (EHEs) are increasing in frequency, duration, and intensity, and this trend is projected to continue as part of ongoing climate change. There is a paucity of data regarding how EHEs may affect highly vulnerable populations, such as patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Such data are needed to inform ESRD patient management guidelines in a changing climate. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between EHEs and the risk of hospital admission or mortality among patients with ESRD and further characterize how this risk may vary among races/ethnicities…

Normative data of contact heat evoked potentials from the lower extremities.

Contact heat evoked potentials (CHEPs) have become an acknowledged research tool in the assessment of the integrity of the nociceptive system and gained importance in the diagnostic work-up of patients with suspected small fiber neuropathy. For the latter, normative values for CHEP amplitude and latency are indispensable for a clinically meaningful interpretation of the results gathered in patients. To this end, CHEPs were recorded in 100 healthy subjects over a wide age range (20-80 years) and from three different dermatomes of the lower extremities (L2, L5, and S2). A normal baseline (35-52

African dryland antelope trade-off behaviours in response to heat extremes.

Climate change is predicted to narrow the prescriptive zone of dryland species, potentially leading to behavioural modifications with fitness consequences. This study explores the behavioural responses of three widespread African antelope species-springbok, kudu and eland-to extreme heat in a dryland savanna. We classified the behaviour of 29 individuals during the hot, dry season on the basis of accelerometer data using supervised machine learning and analysed the impact of afternoon heat on behaviour-specific time allocation and overall dynamic body acceleration (ODBA), a proxy for energy ex…

Urbanization-driven increases in summertime compound heat extremes across China.

Summertime extreme heat events exert severe impacts on the natural environment and human society, especially in densely populated and highly urbanized regions. While previous studies have focused on independent heat day/night, there is a lack of attention to the changes in compound events with cooccurring daytime and nighttime extreme temperature on the same day. In this study, we examine the spatio-temporal changes of summertime compound heat extremes (including compound heat day and compound heatwave) across China, with a particular focus on 20 major urban agglomerations (UAs), and quantify …

Unilateral heat accelerates bone elongation and lengthens extremities of growing mice.

Linear growth failure results from a broad spectrum of systemic and local disorders that can generate chronic musculoskeletal disability. Current bone lengthening protocols involve invasive surgeries or drug regimens, which are only partially effective. Exposure to warm ambient temperature during growth increases limb length, suggesting that targeted heat could noninvasively enhance bone elongation. We tested the hypothesis that daily heat exposure on one side of the body unilaterally increases femoral and tibial lengths. Mice (N = 20) were treated with 40 °C unilateral heat for 40 min/day for

Relationship between urban spatial form and extreme heat events of major prefecture-level and above cities in China.

Global climate change has increased the frequency, intensity, and scope of extreme heat events, while urbanization has intensified the urban heat island effect. To alleviate the negative effects of extreme heat events, the demand for urban form optimization increases. Treating 326 major prefecture-level and above cities in China as the study objects, and applying the 85th percentile threshold to daily temperature time series spanning the past 30 years, we obtained the number of extreme heat days in each city in 2020, and identified the distribution characte-ristics of extreme heat events. We f…

Extreme Heat Exposure Enhanced the Associations Between Prepregnancy Weight and the Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy and Endothelial Dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Prepregnancy overweight or obesity may increase cardiovascular risk, but whether extreme heat intensifies its association with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) or endothelial dysfunction (ED) is unclear. METHODS: In this population-based cohort of 7820 pregnant women, prepregnancy body mass index and HDPs were obtained from hospital records. Ambient temperature data were sourced from the National Centers for Environmental Information. Plasma endothelial biomarkers (VCAM-1 [vascular cell adhesion molecule-1], ICAM-1 [intercellular adhesion molecule-1], E-selectin) were me…
