Diagnostic dilemma of kimura disease of eyelids.

Kimura disease (KD) is a rare benign chronic inflammatory disease that presents as a nodule mostly involving deep subcutaneous tissue of the head and neck region with frequent regional lymphadenopathy and peripheral blood eosinophilia. KD shares some clinical and histopathological similarity with angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE). Consequently, KD and ALHE were once considered variants of the same disease spectrum. We present here rare cases of Kimura disease and ALHE involving the eyelid and lacrimal gland and discuss their differential features.

[Discoid lupus on the eyelids: case report].

Discoid lupus is characterized by erythematosus lesions limited to the skin, covered by adherent white scales, which rise at places more exposed to the sun. A case of a 26 year-old woman, who was suffering for months from redness and burning of the eyes, and was been treated for blepharitis without resolution is reported. On the eyelids exam, ulcerated lesions were found, that were diagnosed as discoid lupus by immunofluorescence. When faced with chronic lesions on the eyelids that do not respond to medical treatment, even if the ancillary exams are normal, the incisional biopsy must be perfor…

Glaucoma from topical corticosteroids to the eyelids.

Raised intraocular pressure and glaucoma have rarely been associated with use of periorbital corticosteroids for dermatological conditions such as blepharitis and eczema. Three cases are described in which periorbital topical corticosteroids appear to have resulted in raised intraocular pressure or glaucoma. Topical corticosteroids used for dermatological conditions around the face and eyes are often regarded as being fairly innocuous with regard to ocular side-effects. This case series demonstrates that secondary open-angle glaucoma can be a sight-threatening consequence, and periorbital ster

Modified temporalis muscle transfer for paralytic eyelids.

The major problems in paralytic eyelids are the inability to close the eye, lower lid sagging, and epiphora. The upper eyelid is responsible for most of the opening and closing of the eye, whereas a lower eyelid positioned properly against the globe is necessary for collection and flow of the tear fluid. Modification of temporalis muscle transfer, a classic technique, was planned to restore these functions selectively in paralytic eyelids. Twelve unilateral and one bilateral irreversible facial paralysis patients with different degrees of lagophthalmos and ectropion were included. Twice as muc…

Streptococcal gangrene of the eyelids and orbit.

PURPOSE: Streptococcal gangrene, also termed streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis, is resurgent but remains exceedingly rare. Ophthalmologists and dermatologists must be aware of streptococcal gangrene, as eyelids are the most commonly affected area of the head and neck. METHODS: We studied two cases of streptococcal gangrene of the orbit with clinical manifestations indistinguishable from common nonnecrotizing orbital cellulitis. RESULTS: Infection progressed with dramatic rapidity to produce eyelid necrosis, respiratory failure, sepsis, and severe permanent visual loss caused by ophthalmic …

Repair of avulsion of eyelids and cheek.

Our patient was thrown through the roof of a soft-top Jeep. The right upper and lower lids and the cheek were separated completely from their attaching structures and were hinged laterally over the zygomatic arch. The patient had normal extraocular rotations but could not see when the face flap was replaced. Steps in repair of these separated structures are described. A satisfactory cosmetic and functional result was achieved by anatomic reconstruction. Ptosis surgery at a later date was necessary to give a more normal appearance.

[Gas gangrene of the eyelids and orbits].

Infections with Clostridia are very rare in the orbital region. On the basis of a case report of such an infection in the orbit the authors discuss the clinical behavior, diagnosis, and therapy of this infection with anaerobic bacteria. Computerized tomography was been very helpful in the diagnostic procedure.
