Characteristics of farm injuries in Greece.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the characteristics of occupational and leisure farm injuries in Greece. METHODOLOGY: During a five-year period (1996-2000), 4,326 unintentional farm injuries have been recorded by the Emergency Department Injury Surveillance System in Greece. Data concerning demographic variables, accident conditions, and injury characteristics were collected by in person interviews. The data were analyzed by simple cross-tabulation and hierarchical cluster analysis. RESULTS: Injuries from falls on the same level are mainly lower-limb fractures and occur during the winter among older w

Diseases of farmed crocodiles and ostriches.

Crocodiles and ostriches are very sensitive to stress, and the ideal conditions for intensive rearing have not yet been established. Consequently, mortality is often directly linked to conditions on the farm. Crocodile and caiman pox, adenoviral hepatitis, mycoplasmosis, chlamydiosis and coccidiosis are crocodile-specific infections with reservoirs in wild populations and adult wild-caught breeding stock. Other important conditions are salmonellosis, non-specific septicaemia, trichinellosis, the nutritional diseases osteomalacia, fat necrosis and gout, as well as winter sores. The only ostrich

[Hormonal disruptors and farm animals].

A number of man made environmental contaminants displays a weak hormonal, usually oestrogenic, activity. Currently such contaminants are termed hormone disruptors, a terminology that also includes natural compounds with hormonal activity, such as phyto and fungal oestrogens. Fertility and morphological defects in wildlife are related to high exposure to man made hormone disruptors. The potential threat of such exposure for human reproductive health is widely discussed. A possible decline in sperm counts in men is one of the subjects related to such environmental factors. There are no firm indi

Dermatitis in Ecuadorean farm workers.

Using a cross-sectional survey of potato farm workers in northern Ecuador, we examined the relationship between pesticide exposure and skin disorders. From a farm population census, all pesticide applicators and 1/2 of exposed field workers were selected. Controls were age-matched from urban occupations. Individual exposure measures included overall years and current hours working with pesticides. Farm-level measures included numbers of applications over the last 6 months and an application practices score (range 0-4). Each participant underwent a clinical skin examination, with patch tests to

[An outbreak of keratoconjunctivitis in a dairy farm].

An outbreak of infectious kerato-conjunctivitis is described in a dairy herd during the (winter)stable period. Moraxella was isolated from lacrimation fluid from three animals. The development of the infection was possibly precipitated by a vaccination with modified live IBR virus, adenovirus type 3 and parainfluenza virus type 3. Presumably, climatological-stable conditions play an important role in the clinical manifestation of the infection.

[Leptospira hardjo on a dairy farm].

The results of a bacteriological and serological study of the presence of L. hardjo on a dairy farm in view of a case of milk fever in a farmer are reviewed. In addition, the epidemiology, prevention and possible treatment of the infection on the dairy farm are discussed.

Low seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in pig farms (Sus scrofa domesticus) of eastern Spain in intensive farms with control of animal entry.

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Although the definitive hosts are cats, other species can act as reservoirs, including livestock. In pigs, the infection is subclinical, so its relevance as a silent reservoir could be greater. The data related to the seroprevalence of T. gondii in pigs differ according to different factors, including methodology used, country, farm type, and location, and epidemiological factors, such as sex or age. The seroprevalence of T. gondii in pigs housed in intensive systems, specifically medium-sized farms wit…

Giardia and Cryptosporidium on dairy farms and the role these farms may play in contaminating water sources in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Cattle represent a reservoir for Giardia and Cryptosporidium and may contaminate water sources. OBJECTIVES: To determine the distribution of Cryptosporidium and Giardia on dairy farms and in water bodies near the farms. FARMS AND WATER SOURCES: Twenty dairy farms and 20 wells and 13 surface water samples associated with dairy farms. METHODS: Proportions of samples positive for Cryptosporidium or Giardia were determined by a direct immunofluorescence assay. Fecal and water samples were taken at different times. RESULTS: Thirty-two (95% CI: 29-35%) and 14% (95% CI: 12-17%) of feca…

Leptospirosis in a Dutch catfish farm.

A 51-year-old farm worker presented with jaundice and fever. There had been a rat infestation around the farm ponds and in the shed. He was admitted to our hospital with acute renal and liver failure, thrombocytopenia and rhabdomyolysis. Because of the clinical clues, leptospirosis was suspected and diagnosed in blood by polymerase chain reaction and serology. Also his son, a co-worker on the farm, showed a positive serology. Clinicians should be aware of these occupational outbreaks and should recognise the clinical picture.

Commercial crocodile farming in Botswana.

A survey-based study was carried out to assess the state of crocodile farming in Botswana. A prepared, structured questionnaire was dispatched to crocodile farmers based on a directory provided by the Fisheries section of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks in the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and National Parks. The oldest farm was established in 1986. An average of three farms have been in operation since then, all of which obtained their stock from the Okavango and Thamalakane rivers in Botswana. The current stock averages 5,419 animals as follows: breeders 4%, hatchlings 56%,…

Farm injuries in children: a review.

Farming is one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States. Unfortunately, risk of injury and death extends not only to adults, but to children that live, play, and work on the farm. This article reviews the epidemiology, pathogenesis and prevention of farm injury in children and adolescents. In Wisconsin 39 children were killed in the agricultural setting between 1995 and 1999. Nationwide, over 100 children per year are killed and 27,000 injured on farms. The age distribution of injury in children is bimodal, with one peak at 3-4 years of age and a second peak at 13-16 years. Boys …

Observations of leptospirosis in farmed deer.

AIMS: Slaughterhouse and on-farm surveys were undertaken to investigate some aspects of leptospirosis (Leptospira interrogans) in farmed deer in the lower North Island of New Zealand. METHODS: Blood samples and kidneys were collected at slaughter from 601 l-year and older red and red X Wapiti stags and 21 adult hinds from 53 farms (10 or 12 deer per farm). Serum samples were analysed for up to seven Leptospiral serovars. Gross and histological examinations of kidneys were undertaken. Kidneys from 202 deer were cultured for leptospires. A follow-up postal questionnaire (68% response) indicated…

Poxvirus in farmed Nile crocodiles.

In an outbreak of wart-like skin lesions in nine-month-old farmed Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) the lesions were especially common on the head and neck but occurred on all parts of the body except the tail. Eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies were present in epithelial cells and further examination of the lesions by transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of a poxvirus. An autogenous vaccine was produced from material from the lesions and in six vaccinated crocodiles the lesions healed more quickly than in unvaccinated controls.
