Diet Mimicking "Fast Food" Causes Structural Changes to the Retina Relevant to Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Introduction: Metabolic syndrome is a disorder characterized by a constellation of findings including truncal obesity, elevated blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, and high blood glucose. Recent evidence suggests that metabolic syndrome may be associated with increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other eye diseases. Recently, C57BL/6J wild-type mice fed with a "fast food" diet consisting of high fat, cholesterol, and fructose-supplemented water showed unique systemic pathology consistent with metabolic syndrome and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Additionally, the

Contribution of M1 and M2 muscarinic receptor subtypes to convulsions in fasted mice treated with scopolamine and given food.

Treatment of fasted mice and rats with the nonselective muscarinic antagonist, scopolamine or atropine, causes convulsions after food intake. This study evaluated the effect of fasting on the expression of M1 and M2 muscarinic receptors in the brain regions, the relationship between receptor expression and seizure stages, and the muscarinic receptor subtype which plays a role in the occurrence of convulsions. Mice were grouped as allowed to eat ad lib (fed) and deprived of food for 24h (fasted). Fasted animals developed convulsions after being treated with scopolamine (60%) or the selective M1

Health literacy as a moderator of menu labeling effects on fast-food ordering: an online randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether functional health literacy moderates the effects of menu labeling formats on fast-food ordering behavior. METHODS: A total of 2829 US adults completed an online randomized controlled survey in 2022. Participants viewed 1 of 8 menus in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design varying calorie labels (present/absent), sodium stoplight icons (present/absent), and "all-natural" claims (present/absent), then selected an entrée, side, beverage, and optional dessert. Linear regression models tested main and interaction effects of labeling formats and functional health literacy on t

Serum and Liver Lipidome Following Empagliflozin Administration for Six Months in a Fast Food Diet Mouse Model.

Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter inhibitor approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was the 6-month effect of empagliflozin on serum and liver lipidome in C57BL/6J mice fed on a fast food diet (FFD). Three groups were studied; two of them fed on FFD, one with empagliflozin (EMPA group), and another without empagliflozin (FFD group); the third group fed on a chow diet and served as the control group (CD group). Following untargeted lipidomic analysis, the FFD and EMPA groups displayed largely similar serum lipid profiles, characterized by ele

Food restriction by intermittent fasting induces diabetes and obesity and aggravates spontaneous atherosclerosis development in hypercholesterolaemic mice.

Different regimens of food restriction have been associated with protection against obesity, diabetes and CVD. In the present study, we hypothesised that food restriction would bring benefits to atherosclerosis- and diabetes-prone hypercholesterolaemic LDL-receptor knockout mice. For this purpose, 2-month-old mice were submitted to an intermittent fasting (IF) regimen (fasting every other day) over a 3-month period, which resulted in an overall 20 % reduction in food intake. Contrary to our expectation, epididymal and carcass fat depots and adipocyte size were significantly enlarged by 15, 72

Scopolamine-induced convulsions in fasted mice after food intake: evaluation of the sedative effect in the suppression of convulsions.

Food intake triggers convulsions in fasted mice and rats treated with antimuscarinic drugs, scopolamine or atropine. Most of the drugs produced anticonvulsant efficacy in these convulsions have sedative effects. Thus, the present study was performed to evaluate the contribution of sedation in the suppression of convulsions by using sedative drugs chlorpromazine, morphine, amitriptyline and diphenhydramine. Mice fasted for 24h and treated with 3mg/kg scopolamine developed convulsions soon after refeeding. Treatment of chlorpromazine and morphine during food deprivation did not provide a prevent

Consumer behavior and its role in E. coli outbreaks: the impact of fast-food preparation practices and hygiene awareness.

BACKGROUND: The fast-food industry, a rapidly expanding business due to the influence of urbanization and busy lifestyles, has significantly shaped consumer food habits and quality food-seeking behavior. However, this fast-growing sector is frequently challenged by bacteria of clinical, microbiological, and economic importance, including Escherichia coli (E. coli). While many strains of E. coli are harmless and support digestion, pathogenic variants such as E. coli O157:H7 are responsible for severe foodborne illnesses, public health crises, and economic losses. MAIN BODY: Our study explores

Water-only fasting and an exclusively plant foods diet in the management of stage IIIa, low-grade follicular lymphoma.

Follicular lymphoma (FL), the second most common non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), is well characterised by a classic histological appearance and an indolent course. Current treatment protocols for FL range from close observation to immunotherapy, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapies. We report the case of a 42-year-old woman diagnosed by excisional biopsy with stage IIIa, grade 1 FL. In addition to close observation, the patient underwent a medically supervised, 21-day water-only fast after which enlarged lymph nodes were substantially reduced in size. The patient then consumed a diet of minimally

Comparative effects of food restriction, fasting, diabetes and thyroidectomy on growth hormone and thyrotropin gene expression in the rat pituitary.

To examine the molecular basis for the decreased pituitary growth hormone (GH) and thyrotropin (TSH) content during restricted feeding, fasting and diabetes, we measured steady-state levels of mRNA for TSH-alpha, TSH-beta and GH in the pituitary from normal rats either fed ad libitum (C), limited to 75%, 50% and 25% (FR75, FR50, FR25, respectively) of ad libitum intake, or deprived of food for 2 and 4 days (F2 and F4, respectively), and also in streptozotocin-diabetic (D) and D insulin-treated animals. The results from these experimental groups were compared with those in thyroidectomized (Tx)

In situ formation of deep eutectic solvent for disperser-free microextraction of Fast Green and Erythrosine in food and pharmaceutical samples.

A rapid, environmentally friendly, in situ deep eutectic solvent (DES) based liquid-liquid microextraction method was proposed for the preconcentration and determination of Fast Green (FG) and Erythrosine (ER) in food and pharmaceutical samples. The DES, which was synthesized in situ without the need for disperser liquids or prior preparation, was composed of thymol and tetrabutylammonium bromide (1:2). Key extraction parameters, including pH, DES ratio, extraction time, temperature, ionic strength, and centrifugation time, were adjusted to achieve maximum efficiency. The interaction mechanism

Effects of Intermittent Fasting on Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Thyroid Axis, Palatable Food Intake, and Body Weight in Stressed Rats.

Dietary regimens that are focused on diminishing total caloric intake and restricting palatable food ingestion are the most common strategies for weight control. However, restrictive diet therapies have low adherence rates in obese patients, particularly in stressed individuals. Moreover, food restriction downregulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis (HPT) function, hindering weight loss. Intermittent fasting (IF) has emerged as an option to treat obesity. We compared the effects of IF to an all-day feeding schedule on palatable diet (PD)-stress (S)-induced hyperphagia, HPT axis functi
