subcutaneous fat necrosis is a benign and often self-limiting inflammatory disorder experienced by newborns who were exposed to perinatal stress in the form of asphyxia, hypothermia, cord prolapse, and/or sepsis. lesions are usually benign and self-limiting, with complete resolution anticipated within a few weeks up to 6 months. they can be accompanied by multiple complications. of which the most significant and of life-threatening potential is neonatal hypocalcaemia. if not timely anticipated and adequately treated, the patient might deteriorate due to dehydration and acute renal failure. sym…

Two patients presented with nodular lesions on their lower limbs. Histologically, the dermis, in one case, and the panniculus, in the other, displayed pseudocystic lesions delimited by a serpiginous membranous structure showing the staining characteristics of ceroid. One patient had sclerosing panniculitis while the other had a traumatic panniculitis. These cases illustrate that membranous fat necrosis is a non-specific histological finding and that multiple processes are involved in its etiopathogenesis.

Epipericardial fat necrosis (EFN) is a rare but benign cause of acute chest pain that can mimic life-threatening conditions such as myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, and aortic dissection. This case highlights the importance of recognizing EFN to prevent unnecessary interventions.

Intraabdominal fat is a metabolically active tissue that may undergo necrosis through a number of mechanisms. Fat necrosis is a common finding at abdominal cross-sectional imaging, and it may cause abdominal pain, mimic findings of acute abdomen, or be asymptomatic and accompany other pathophysiologic processes. Common processes that are present in fat necrosis include torsion of an epiploic appendage, infarction of the greater omentum, and fat necrosis related to trauma or pancreatitis. In addition, other pathologic processes that involve fat may be visualized at computed tomography, includin…

This is a description of two cases of subcutaneous fat necrosis due to asphyxia in two newborns, and associated hypercalcaemia. Treatment with intravenous pamidronate 0.5 mg/kg for three days was very successful and well-tolerated. In conclusion, the treatment of hypercalcaemia was effective, but requires continuous control for a longer period of time due to the risk of fluctuating serum calcium levels.

AIMS: To describe for the first time a lesion termed lipomembranous fat necrosis (LFN) in three patients with spermatic cord torsion.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We reviewed 386 testes and their epididymides and spermatic cords which had been removed for testicular infarction. For the three cases showing LFN, a battery of histochemical tests (including periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), orcein, Sudan black and Perls stains) was applied and clinical histories and laboratory data were also investigated. Findings were similar in the three specimens. The testes showed a central group of necrotic seminiferous t…

We describe findings of intramedullary fat necrosis on five imaging studies in a patient with alcoholic pancreatitis. Radiography and CT of extremities showed multiple osteolytic lesions that were initially considered to be metastases. However, a 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate whole-body bone scan revealed abnormal areas of increased uptake in only the bones of extremities without involvement of the axial skeleton, a distribution quite unusual for metastatic disease. Furthermore, 99mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy was essentially normal. MRI revealed findings compatible with the diagnosis of fat necr…

Clinicopathologic correlation of cutaneous biopsy specimens demonstrating typical lipomembranous fat necrosis was performed. Material from 732 biopsies of various subcutaneous inflammatory disorders seen at our institution in the past 5 years was screened for typical lipomembranous (membranocystic) changes in the panniculus, and 39 specimens from 38 patients with these changes were identified. The most common clinical context in which this condition was observed was in chronic sclerotic plaques of the lower legs associated with venous insufficiency (37% of the total cases). All patients were w…

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of newborn (SFNN) is an uncommon disorder. Submandibular lesion and tissue eosinophilia have not been documented. Two patients with unusual location and unusual pathological findings are reported. Both patients were giant babies, delivered by vaginal route spontaneously with birth injury. Asymptomatic subcutaneous nodules were found over the submandibular area at the ages of 16 and 6 days respectively. Nodules disappeared spontaneously at the age of one month in the first, and two months in the second patient. Histopathological examination of the nodules revealed feat…

Background: Extra-abdominal manifestations of fat necrosis, like subcutaneous fat necrosis, polyarthritis, and polyserositis may appear with an occurrence rate of about 0.8%, wherein intraosseous fat necrosis is a more rare complication of pancreatitis, with few reports in English literature. Case report: A 34-year-old male with a 15-year-history of alcohol abuse was hospitalized several times in the last few years because of attacks of relapsed chronic pancreatitis. After the last attack, pancreatitis came in a stable state ("burned out") with no symptoms and signs of the disease. The patient…

Panniculitis has various etiologies. One of the less common causes is trauma and hence traumatic fat necrosis (FN). These soft tissue injuries usually appear on the shins, thighs, breasts, arms, and buttocks. FN is mainly caused by trauma and may be associated with other conditions such as pancreatic disease. FN arising after intramuscular injections is uncommon and usually appears as firm, encapsulated, mobile, nontender, and solitary or multiple subcutaneous nodules. We report an interesting case of FN caused by intramuscular injections of cefazolin and meglumine antimoniate (MA) in a 38-yea…

Panniculitis is a group of heterogeneous disorders characterized by inflammation of the subcutaneous adipose tissue. Panniculitis of breast tissue as the initial manifestation has rarely been reported and is often misdiagnosed. Breast panniculitis may cause substantial morbidity and early diagnosis and treatment are important for the prognosis of the disease. The present study has reported a case of panniculitis with inflammation of the mammary glands as the initial presentation and provided a detailed description of ultrasonography, X-ray, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and o

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of newborn is a form of noninfectious panniculitis. It is an uncommon condition and mostly occurs in full-term infants within first weeks of life that have had a significant condition such as hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy at the time of birth. Subcutaneous fat necrosis of newborn is usually a self-limiting condition but may be associated with hypercalcemia, which may lead to life threatening levels. Hypercalcemia is a significant reason of subcutaneous fat necrosis and needs an intervention involving hyperhydration, calcitonin, diuretics, steroids and sometimes bisp…
