Cytomegalovirus mononucleosis: risk for fathers of young children.

A case of pyrexia of unknown origin in a 35-year-old man, who had become a father nine months earlier, is presented. A diagnosis of cytomegalovirus mononucleosis was achieved only after extensive investigations. It is suggested that cytomegalovirus mononucleosis should be added to the differential diagnosis when investigating pyrexia of unknown origin in fathers of young children.

Smoking behaviour change among fathers of new infants.

Protecting infants from exposure to parental tobacco smoke is key to positive health outcomes in childhood and later life. While mothers' smoking has been well researched, fathers' smoking has received little attention. This paper reports data from a cross-sectional survey of 286 smoking fathers in the English Midlands, interviewed when their infants were 8-14 weeks old. It examines whether fathers attempt and successfully achieve two smoking behaviours positively associated with infant health: quitting and not smoking in the home. The birth of a new baby was not associated with attempting or …

Correlates of postnatal depression in mothers and fathers.

BACKGROUND: We compare and contrast some correlates of paternal and maternal depression after the live birth of a first child, as part of a longitudinal study. METHOD: Fifty-four first-time mothers attending obstetric services in Oporto, Portugal, and 42 of their husbands or partners participated in a longitudinal study of their mental health. All subjects were given a semi-structured clinical interview (SADS) at six months antenatally and at 12 months postnatally and sub-samples were interviewed at three months postnatally. At all these times all the mothers and fathers also completed a tran…

Treatment of divorcing fathers: social and psychotherapeutic considerations.

The author summarizes the psychotherapeutic issues most frequently encountered in his crisis treatment of 16 divorcing fathers for whom divorce was fundamentally a child-centered crisis. Fear and guilt over separation from children and wife, outrage and disappointment with the legal system, anxiety about the social and sexual readjustment to single life, and the need to develop strategies for continued child contact were most prevalent. The author's suggestions for the management of these issues include the therapist's familiarization with divorce as it affects and is influenced by intrapsychi…

Genetic disease in the offspring of older fathers.

Autosomal dominant genetic diseases may result from the transmission of a trait by a carrier parent or from gene mutation in one of the gametes from which the child develops. The mean age of fathers of affected persons has been found to be greater than expected for several autosomal dominant diseases due to new mutations. To assess the clinical importance of this observation, the relative and absolute frequencies of offspring with autosomal dominant diseases due to mutation in the sperm from fathers of various ages have been calculated. The relative frequency of new autosomal dominant mutation…

Including the fathers' perspective in holistic care. Part 2: Findings on the fathers' hospital experience including restraining the child patient for treatment.

Part 2 of this discussion provides a detailed examination of specific issues associated with the fathers' personal involvement in their child's hospital treatment for paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). In particular, fathers testify to the difficulties they encounter when involved with the restraining of their child-patient for treatment. Issues raised by parents during this study have been addressed by recommendations detailing factors which need to be considered when providing holistic care for the family and the child with leukaemia.

The development and validation of the attitude toward father scale. A tool for assessing the father's role in children's behavior problems.

Numerous measures assess how parental influences may relate to children's development of psychological difficulties. The majority of such measures focuses specifically on the mother-child relationship or assume both parents contribute equally and similarly to their children's psychological well-being. Previous research has largely ignored the need to assess the father-child relationship when examining parental influences on behavior problems. The goal of the present study was to develop and validate a self-report questionnaire to assess the father-child relationship. The Attitude Toward Father
