Five severely displaced transepiphyseal fractures of the neck of the femur in five very young children were treated nonoperatively with a spica cast. Four of these fractures healed in varus, but two with an open proximal femoral physis corrected with growth. One fracture had an 18-month delay in diagnosis and treatment, but subsequently healed after a valgus osteotomy of the proximal femur and bone grafting. There was no case of avascular necrosis. We recommend initial nonoperative treatment with hip spica cast immobilization for this type of fracture in the very young child. If correction of

Two patients are described, each with a fracture-dislocation of the hip combined with a fracture of the neck of the same femur. Open reduction combined with internal fixation was performed in both cases. Eight years later one patient had developed avascular necrosis of the femoral head; no signs of avascular necrosis or associated arthritis have appeared in the other patient after four years. A plea is made for considering this more conservative type of operation for these serious injuries before resorting to total hip replacement.

Non-pathologic fractures of the neck of the femur in younger patients aged between 15 and 50 years old are rare injuries. These are so-called effectual injuries with very high energy induction due to traffic accidents, falls and sport accidents, causing healthy bones to be fractured and often leading to multiple injuries. The short-term and long-term complications of such injuries sometimes give rise to substantial problems, in particular from non-union fractures and avascular necrosis of the head of the femur. In the literature (and from some experts) the impression is occasionally given that

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine the rate of femoral neck fractures in patients who have sustained bilateral femur fractures compared to unilateral femur fractures.
DESIGN AND SETTING: A retrospective review of an institutional trauma database was completed at a single level 1 trauma academic medical center.
PATIENTS: All patients treated for a femur fracture between May 1, 2018 and December 31, 2020 were included.
RESULTS: Twenty-one patients sustained bilateral femur fractures (11%) and 166 sustained unilateral femur fractures. Fifteen associated ipsilateral femoral ne

PURPOSE: In the UK, it is common practice to obtain full-length femur radiographs in patients admitted with neck of femur fractures (NOF) and co-existing malignancy. Limited literature exists studying this topic. Our aim was to identify whether full-length femur radiographs are of diagnostic and therapeutic value in this demographic.
METHODS: A retrospective observational analysis of the patients admitted with a neck of femur fracture over a 5-year period (2015-2020) using the National Hip Fracture Database was performed at a major trauma centre. Electronic patient records were accessed to sc

Total hip replacements are now commonly used in elective settings for patients in the NHS. With the rising costs associated with hospital admissions, there is an opportunity to apply day-case arthroplasty principles to total hip replacements in trauma patients with a neck of femur fracture. This report outlines a case of a patient in her sixties who presented with a fall and an intracapsular neck of femur fracture. She was admitted as an orthopaedic patient and treated with an emergency total hip replacement, given her good functional baseline and limited co-morbidities. Her health was optimis

BACKGROUND: Femoral neck fractures are prevalent and make up the highest per cent of proximal femur fractures. The femoral neck is the most … %) and books and magazines reading (20.5%).
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, elderly awareness regarding femur neck fracture was very low especially among male elderly and those with no history of trauma. Poor awareness for clinical presentation and complications of NFF was reported.

INTRODUCTION: Doctors are bound to obtain informed written consent prior to any form of surgical procedure on a patient. The General Medical Council (GMC) and the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) provide guidance on what constitutes valid consent. Failure to obtain valid and adequate consent can have legal ramifications. All relevant material risks associated with the surgery must be discussed with the patient during the consenting process.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study of the consenting practices for neck of femur fracture surgeries, covering

INTRODUCTION: Pain management in patients with hip fractures can be challenging. Poor pain control is associated with reduced mobility and increased morbidity. Inadequate analgesia in patients with dementia is a concern. After using several different alternatives, transdermal buprenorphine was chosen as a standardised approach for analgesia in patients with fragility fracture in our hospital. There is limited evidence on the use of buprenorphine in this population. Our aim was to investigate the safety and effectiveness of transdermal buprenorphine in patients with hip fractures.

PURPOSE: To review controversies systematically in the management of pediatric neck femur fracture from the literature and to develop consensus for the optimum management.
METHODS: Authors searched literature by using keywords of pediatric neck femur fracture, proximal femur fracture, complications, management by following PRISMA guidelines. A common dilemma was listed.
RESULTS: Age, mechanism of injury, fracture type, presentation, treatment method, implant, and nature of complications were compared. Inference from recent literature was extracted for optimum management.
CONCLUSION: Immedia

Paediatric femur neck fracture is an uncommon injury and is known for high rate of complications. This in turn, can have significant impact on development of hip and overall function of the child. Controversy prevails in many areas of management and it still remains a difficult injury to manage. Through this paper, an attempt has been made to summarize the current concepts in management and suggest current recommendations regarding the controversies so that these injuries can be managed judiciously. A systematic review was done as per PRISMA guidelines using pre-defined inclusion and exclusion…

BACKGROUND: Ochronosis is a very rare disorder with an incidence of 2 to 5 per million live births. It is a genetic disorder with autosomal recessive inheritance. It is characterized by dark brown pigmentation of cartilage, capsules of joints and other soft tissues. Ochronosis usually presents as ochronotic arthropathy and spondylosis.
PURPOSE: This article describes a very rare presentation of scoliosis and fracture of the neck of the femur in a patient with ochronosis.
METHODS: A 65-year-old woman with left-sided scoliosis presented to us following a fall with fracture of the neck of the f

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Osteomyelitis of the neck of the femur is uncommon, often with a misleading clinical presentation. We report a series of 28 cases of osteomyelitis of the femoral neck to illustrate the particular clinical and imaging findings related to this localization.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a series of 28 children treated in our unit from 1990 through 2004: 17 boys and 11 girls, mean age eight years (range one month to 14 years). We analyzed the data in this series using a standard checklist, which noted the diagnostic and therapeutic measures. Results were analyzed by studyi

A prospective study of 236 patients with neglected femoral neck fractures was done to determine the usefulness of a preoperative classification based on the radiologic changes that occur at the site of the fracture. Thirty-four patients were observed in Group I, 125 patients were observed in Group II, and nine patients were observed in Group III. One-hundred sixty-eight patients (71.2%) were treated by closed reduction and internal fixation with cancellous screw and free fibular graft. The fracture union was achieved in all 34 patients of Group I. Union was achieved in 111 (88.8%) of 125 patie

We re-examined 11 children (mean age 6.5 years) who had been treated with surgical drilling and intravenous (i.v.) antibiotics in high doses for acute hematogenous osteomyelitis of the neck of the femur. The mean follow-up time was 3.9 (2.9-6.4) years. 9 children who had been treated with early surgical drilling and i.v. antibiotics were all symptom-free and had normal radiographs at follow-up. The other 2 children had radiographic changes (metaphyseal rarefaction) already when referred to us. They had been treated with antibiotics alone before referral until the infection had spread to the hi
