A man and his three daughters had massive corneal opacities called in their home village "fish-eye disease" because of the resemblance of the eyes to those of boiled fish. The two living daughters had the same dyslipoproteinaemia, characterised by normal serum cholesterol but raised serum triglycerides, raised very-low-density lipoproteins, strikingly high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) triglycerides. LDL contained normal sized as well as abnormally large particles and a 90% reduction in the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCA

Leptin is a potent anorexigen, but little is known about the physiological conditions under which this cytokine regulates food intake in fish. In this study, we characterized the relationships between food intake, O2-carrying capacity, liver leptin-A1 (lep-a1) gene expression, and plasma leptin-A1 in rainbow trout infected with a pathogenic hemoflagellate, Cryptobia salmositica. As lep gene expression is hypoxia-sensitive and Cryptobia-infected fish are anemic, we hypothesized that Cryptobia-induced anorexia is mediated by leptin. A 14-week time course experiment revealed that Cryptobia-infect

Chlamydial infections of fish are emerging as an important cause of disease in new and established aquaculture industries. To date, epitheliocystis, a skin and gill disease associated with infection by these obligate intracellular pathogens, has been described in over 90 fish species, including hosts from marine and fresh water environments. Aided by advances in molecular detection and typing, recent years have seen an explosion in the description of these epitheliocystis-related chlamydial pathogens of fish, significantly broadening our knowledge of the genetic diversity of the order Chlamydi

We report here a historical cohort study on cancer mortality among Minamata disease (MD) patients (n = 1,351) in Kagoshima and Kumamoto Prefectures of Japan. Taking into account their living area, sex, age and fish eating habits, the residents (n = 5,667; 40 years of age or over at 1966) living in coastal areas of Kagoshima, who consumed fish daily, were selected as a reference group from the six-prefecture cohort study conducted by Hirayama et al. The observation periods of the MD patients and of the reference group were from 1973 to 1984 and from 1970 to 1981, respectively. Survival analysis

Metabolic dysfunction associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a chronic condition with hepatic fat accumulation. The intergenerational effect of obesity has predominantly focused on mothers, with limited studies on paternal obesity. Nutritional intervention with fish oil (FO) has beneficial effects in reducing markers of obesity. We hypothesized that supplementing obese fathers with FO before conception could enhance the metabolic health of their offspring liver. Male mice were assigned to low-fat (LF), high fat (HF), or HF supplemented with FO for 10 weeks. Subsequently, these males were ma

Along with globalization of traveling and trading, fish-borne nematodiases seems to be increasing in number. However, apart from occasional and sporadic case reports or mini-reviews of particular diseases in particular countries, an overview of fish-borne nematodiasis among travelers have never been performed. In this review, we gathered fishborne nematodiasis among travelers for recent 25 years by an extensive global literature survey using appropriate keywords, e.g. travelers diseases, human infection, anisakiasis, gnathostomiasis, capillariasis, sushi, sashimi, ceviche, Gnathostoma, Pseudot

Increasing oily fish intake has been proposed as a strategy for Alzheimer's disease (AD) prevention, but evidence for long-term benefit remains limited. Using observational data from 2012 cognitively healthy adults in the Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort, we emulated a target trial of seven isocaloric fish intake strategies to estimate 21-year AD risk. We modeled repeated measures of diet and adjusted for pre-baseline diet, baseline covariates, and time-varying confounding using the parametric g-formula. The estimated 21-year AD risk ranged from 10.33% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 8.4

INTRODUCTION: Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae is the causative agent of proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in salmonids. Brown trout function as a carrier host, while rainbow trout serve as a dead-end host. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these host-specific differences remain poorly understood. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to identify host-specific transcriptomic signatures distinguishing carrier and dead- end host.
METHOD: Comparative transcriptomic analysis of infected kidneys from brown trout and rainbow trout was performed to identify differential gene expression

The microbiomes of skin and gill mucosal surfaces are critical components in fish health and homeostasis by competitively excluding pathogens, secreting beneficial compounds, and priming the immune system. Disruption of these microbiomes can compromise their capacity for disease resilience and maintaining host homeostasis. However, the extent and nature of microbiome disruption required to impact fish health negatively remains poorly understood. This review examines how various stressors influence the community composition and functionality of fish skin and gill microbiomes, and the subsequent

Recently, several attempts have been made to replace egg-based with cell-based vaccines to prevent and control Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV). This study aimed to evaluate a new fish cell line (M99) for culturing and replicating IBDV. After observing complete cytopathic effects (CPE) on the M99 cell line, virus titers were determined using the TCID50 test, and the presence of the virus was confirmed using an RT-PCR test. Subsequently, 135 broiler chickens (14 days old) were randomly divided into three equal groups for immune response measurements: G1: immunized with a commercial vaccin

Since 2012, low-to-moderate mortality associated with an Erysipelothrix sp. bacterium has been reported in ornamental fish. Histological findings have included facial cellulitis, necrotizing dermatitis and myositis, and disseminated coelomitis with abundant intralesional Gram-positive bacterial colonies. Sixteen Erysipelothrix sp. isolates identified phenotypically as E. rhusiopathiae were recovered from diseased cyprinid and characid fish. Similar clinical and histological changes were also observed in zebrafish, Danio rerio, challenged by intracoelomic injection. The Erysipelothrix sp. isola

We examined the distribution of iridoviruses in 10 freshwater ornamental fish species hatched in Korea and imported from other Asian countries using both 1-step and 2-step polymerase chain reation (PCR). None of the 10 fish species analyzed were free of iridovirus as shown by 2-step PCR positive results, and 3 species yielded 1-step PCR positive results with associated mortality. Cloned PCR amplicons of the adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) and major capsid protein (MCP) genes in genomic DNA of iridovirus showed the same nucleotide sequences as that of infectious spleen and kidney necrosis vir

BACKGROUND: Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a common hereditary disease. A number of murine and zebrafish mutants have been generated and used for the study of PKD as metanephric and pronephric models, respectively. Here, we report a medaka (Oryzias latipes) mutant that develops numerous cysts in the kidney in adulthood fish in an autosomal-recessive manner as a mesonephric model of PKD.
METHODS: The phenotypes of the medaka pc mutant were described in terms of morphologic, histologic, and ultrastructural features. The pc see-through stock was produced by crossing a pc mutant and a fish fr

BACKGROUND: Crohn disease (CD) is associated with osteoporosis and other extraintestinal manifestations that might be mediated by cytokines from circulating (peripheral blood) mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Fish oil rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) reduces disease activity in patients with CD with raised laboratory markers of inflammation and in healthy subjects alters PBMC function.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effect of fish oil plus antioxidants on cytokine production by PBMCs from patients with CD with raised C-reactive protein concentrations (>/=6.9 mg/L)

Recently, food deficiency has become the most critical problem and a major global challenge. Rapid population growth requires increased food production to meet the resulting demand. High meat and chicken prices prompted the world to focus on fish production to meet ongoing food needs. Seafood is rich in vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. Fish-borne parasitic diseases are primarily found in people in most countries, causing severe illness and death. This review article will focus on the most important parasites affecting marine fishes and the most popular parasitic diseases affecting fish global

Recently, it has been reported that either infection of rodents with the periodontopathogenic Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) or administration of its lipopolysaccharide (Pg-LPS) to rodents with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) causes progression and exacerbation of the disease. Thus, periodontal disease and NASH are closely related, and further research is required. Medaka (Oryzias latipes) has been used as an alternative model for studying human diseases in rodents. In this study, we investigated the association between NASH and Pg-LPS in a NASH model medaka, fed a high-fat diet for 12 wee
