A century and a half of research on the evolution of insect flight.

The gill and paranotal lobe theories of insect wing evolution were both proposed in the 1870s. For most of the 20th century, the paranotal lobe theory was more widely accepted, probably due to the fundamentally terrestrial tracheal respiratory system; in the 1970s, some researchers advocated for an elaborated gill ("pleural appendage") theory. Lacking transition fossils, neither theory could be definitively rejected. Winged insects are abundant in the fossil record from the mid-Carboniferous, but insect fossils are vanishingly rare earlier, and all earlier fossils are from primitively wingless

Optic nerve sheath diameter and spaceflight: defining shortcomings and future directions.

Neuro-ocular changes during long-duration space flight are known as spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS). The ability to detect, monitor, and prevent SANS is a priority of current space medicine research efforts. Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurement has been used both terrestrially and in microgravity as a proxy for measurements of elevated intracranial pressure. ONSD shows promise as a potential method of identifying and quantitating neuro-ocular changes during space flight. This review examines 13 studies measuring ONSD and its relationship to microgravity exposure o

Differences between stance and foot preference evident in Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) fish holding during movement.

BACKGROUND: Skateboarders, snowboarders, and surfers all show stance preferences for which foot is forward while moving. We are unaware of other animals than humans with a stance preference, perhaps excepting Osprey, who fly their caught fish beneath them in a foot-forward stance. We hypothesize there should be no difference between left foot forward, right foot back (conventional) versus right foot forward left foot back (goofy) stances or for fish holding with unilateral left or right foot. Online, publicly available, convenience images of Osprey catching fish were accessed and assessed by f

Flight style and time-activity budgets of the smallest petrels.

Procellariforms are the most oceanic among birds, regularly embarking on the longest journeys in the animal kingdom to find food over an apparently featureless sea surface. To minimize energy expenditure, many species harness wind energy through dynamic soaring, extracting kinetic energy from the wind shear. The smallest members of this order, storm petrels, have functional traits that prevent this type of locomotion, and are predicted to rely on flapping flight despite their high motility. However, theoretical predictions have never been validated and their flight strategy and activity budget

Genetic Variation Predominates Over Developmental Temperature-Induced Plasticity in Shaping Migratory Flight Capacity in the Diamondback Moth.

Insects represent the largest group of migratory animals in terms of species and biomass, yet the relative contributions of population-associated genetic differentiation and environmental plasticity to insect migration remain unclear. Here, we integrate population genomics with common garden experiments to infer the geographic origins of immigrant populations and evaluate population- and developmental-temperature-associated variation in migration-related flight traits in the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), a major pest of cruciferous crops. Population-genomic analyses indicated that im

Neuroplasticity changes during space flight.

Neuroplasticity refers to the ability of neurons to alter some functional property in response to alterations in input. Most of the inputs received by the brain and thus the neurons are coming from the overall sensory system. The lack of gravity during space flight or even the reduction of gravity during the planned Mars missions are and will change these inputs. The often observed "loop swimming" of some aquatic species is under discussion to be based on sensory input changes as well as the observed motion sickness of astronauts and cosmonauts. Several reports are published regarding these ch

Age, experience, and homing performance in a long-distance migrating bird, the barn swallow.

Homing, the ability of animals to return to specific areas, is crucial for their survival and reproduction. It plays a fundamental role in shaping their spatial range by enabling them to maintain connections between distant critical habitats and optimize resource use. Homing performance, defined here as a combination of likelihood of return and homing time, is known to improve with repeated flights from the same starting location. However, the effect of age on this metric in adult migrant birds is still poorly investigated. I conducted an experiment to investigate whether age and experience ga

Odor tracking in flying Drosophila requires visual reafference and compass neurons.

Flying Drosophila critically depend on high-contrast visual surroundings to localize odor sources in still air, yet the neural mechanisms of visual integration for active odor tracking are unknown. We demonstrate that Ellipsoid body-Protocerebral bridge-Gall (E-PG) neurons-head direction cells in the central complex-work in concert with self-generated visual motion signals to maintain a stable heading metric during olfactory navigation in flight. Using a magnetic tether system and a digital "visual clamp," we show that removing the visual feedback generated by a fly's own turns (reafference) c

Postural control of fish related to gravity input.

The disappearance of gravity input during space flight causes many functional disorders in animal and human postural control system. On the other hand, it has been shown that these functional deficits reduce or disappear with time and adapt to weightlessness. Unusual fish behavior was reported during the first few days of orbit flight and also during postflight recovery in Skylab 3 experiment. Similar fish behavior was observed in microgravity obtained during the parabolic flight of airplane. These results suggest that fish might provide a good model for investigating adaptation of sensory-mot

Fatal accidents in neonatal pterosaurs and selective sampling in the Solnhofen fossil assemblage.

The Upper Jurassic Solnhofen Archipelago of Germany has yielded a pterosaur assemblage that has long underpinned and continues to dominate much of our understanding of these flying reptiles. Knowledge of how this assemblage was shaped by processes of fossilization, critical for generating robust paleobiological hypotheses, remains limited. Here, we combine fatal trauma case studies with quantitative taphonomic data to reveal two distinct fossilization pathways. Catastrophic storms played a primary role, preferentially sampling small, immature pterosaurs. Storms caused these pterosaurs to drown

Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) physiological response to novel thermal and hypoxic conditions at high elevations.

Many species have not tracked their thermal niches upslope as predicted by climate change, potentially because higher elevations are associated with abiotic challenges beyond temperature. To better predict whether organisms can continue to move upslope with rising temperatures, we need to understand their physiological performance when subjected to novel high-elevation conditions. Here, we captured Anna's hummingbirds - a species expanding their elevational distribution in concordance with rising temperatures - from across their current elevational distribution and tested their physiological r

High innate attractiveness to black targets in the blue blowfly, Calliphora vomitoria (L.) (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Calliphora vomitoria is a myiasis-causing fly in many animal species including humans. The control of blowflies is still anchored on the use of chemicals. However, mass trapping and lure-and-kill techniques represent a promising alternative to pesticides. Visual and olfactory cues are the main stimuli routing the fly's landing behavior. Notably, color attractiveness has been barely explored in flies of medical and veterinary importance, with special reference to blowflies. In this study, we investigated the innate color preferences in C. vomitoria adults, testing binary combinations of painted

Electrical and chemical stimulation of the same hypothalamic loci in relation to agressive behaviour in cats: a comparison study.

Chemitrodes which permit electrical and chemical stimulation of the same hypothalamic loci were implanted in anterior hypothalamic and preoptic regions. These sites were stimulated electrically using biphasic square wave pulse (1 ms, 60 Hz) at a current strength ranging from 150-800 microA to evoke an aggressive response. At lower current strength of 150-200 micro A, defence response, a sort of non-specific response can be elicited from these regions. Increasing the current strength to 400 microA led to the recruitment of affective and somatic components and changed the response pattern either

Effect of perphenazine enanthate in Pyrenean chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica).

Perphenazine enanthate was used to allow adaptation to captivity in 11 Pyrenean chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica). At the time of capture, all animals received 0.10 mg/kg of acepromazine maleate and 2.5 mg/kg of perphenazine enanthate intramuscularly. The effect was evaluated by means of three behaviors: alertness, defecation, and flight distance. The tranquilization and lack of fear of humans of all animals were determined and the usefulness of this long-acting tranquilizer for chamois adaptation to captivity was confirmed.

Sticking the landing: leg mechanosensory feedback coordinates the transition from flight to landing.

Landing is an especially demanding stage of flight. Flying animals must rapidly transform multimodal sensory information into the coordinated movement of multiple limbs in order to transition from flight to a stable standing posture, often on surfaces that vary in stability, texture, and orientation. Failure to do so can be costly, leading to injury or death. Here, we examine the role of mechanosensory feedback in guiding landing in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. We describe a novel behavioral assay in which we deliver localized mechanical contact to individual legs of tethered, flyin

The influence of weightlessness on pharmacokinetics.

The primary hostile factor during a spaceflight is the lack of gravity, which can induce space motion sickness and act on bones, muscles and the cardiovascular system. These physiological effects may modify the pharmacokinetics of the drugs administered during the flight producing reduced pharmacological activity or appearance of adverse effects. Given the small number of spaceflights and the difficulties of conducting experiments during missions, pharmacokinetic data obtained in flight are insufficient to determine if drug monitoring is necessary for the drugs present in the onboard medical k

Occupational health and safety aspects of animal handling in dairy production.

Livestock handling in dairy production is associated with a number of health and safety issues. A large number of fatal and nonfatal injuries still occur when handling livestock. The many animal handling tasks on a dairy farm include moving cattle between different locations, vaccination, administration of medication, hoof care, artificial insemination, ear tagging, milking, and loading onto trucks. There are particular problems with bulls, which continue to cause considerable numbers of injuries and fatalities in dairy production. In order to reduce the number of injuries during animal handli

Developmental plasticity and stability in the tracheal networks supplying Drosophila flight muscle in response to rearing oxygen level.

While it is clear that the insect tracheal system can respond in a compensatory manner to both hypoxia and hyperoxia, there is substantial variation in how different parts of the system respond. However, the response of tracheal structures, from the tracheoles to the largest tracheal trunks, have not been studied within one species. In this study, we examined the effect of larval/pupal rearing in hypoxia, normoxia, and hyperoxia (10, 21 or 40kPa oxygen) on body size and the tracheal supply to the flight muscles of Drosophila melanogaster, using synchrotron radiation micro-computed tomography (

The utility of animal models to inform the next generation of human space exploration.

Animals have played a vital role in every stage of space exploration, from early sub-orbital flights to contemporary missions. New physiological and psychological challenges arise with plans to venture deeper into the solar system. Advances in chimeric and knockout animal models, along with genetic modification techniques have enhanced our ability to study the effects of microgravity in greater detail. However, increased investment in the purposeful design of habitats and payloads, as well as in AI-enhanced behavioral monitoring in orbit can better support the ethical and effective use of anim

Free-flight responses of Drosophila melanogaster to attractive odors.

Many motile organisms localize the source of attractive odorants by following plumes upwind. In the case of D. melanogaster, little is known of how individuals alter their flight trajectories after encountering and losing a plume of an attractive odorant. We have characterized the three-dimensional flight behavior of D. melanogaster in a wind tunnel under a variety of odor conditions. In the absence of olfactory cues, hungry flies initiate flight and display anemotactic orientation. Following contact with a narrow ribbon plume of an attractive odor, flies reduce their crosswind velocity while
