Chronic treatment with fluoride affects the jejunum: insights from proteomics and enteric innervation analysis.

Gastrointestinal symptoms are the first signs of fluoride (F) toxicity. In the present study, the jejunum of rats chronically exposed to F was evaluated by proteomics, as well as by morphological analysis. Wistar rats received water containing 0, 10 or 50 mgF/L during 30 days. HuC/D, neuronal Nitric Oxide (nNOS), Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP), Calcitonin Gene Related Peptide (CGRP), and Substance P (SP) were detected in the myenteric plexus of the jejunum by immunofluorescence. The density of nNOS-IR neurons was significantly decreased (compared to both control and 10 mgF/L groups), whil

Effect of DPSS Nd: YAG (532 nm) and diode (980 nm) laser treatment on fluoride uptake in dentin following silver diamine fluoride application: An in vitro study.

Fluoride treatment has long been recognized as an important method for treating dental decay. Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) treatment has emerged as a low-cost and simple approach, combining silver’s antimicrobial properties with fluoride’s caries-inhibiting activities. The present study compares the effects of two lasers, diode-pumped solid-state frequency-doubled Nd: YAG (DPSS, 532 nm) and diode (980 nm), on fluoride absorption in dentin when used with SDF. Following treatment with 38% SDF, the prepared dentin specimens were exposed to radiation for 3, 5, and 10 s using either a frequency-do…

Durability of FTLA treatment as a medicament for dentin hypersensitivity--abrasion resistance and profiles of fluoride release.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the durability of tubules occluded with FTLA treatment by toothbrush abrasion test on the applied surface and by measuring fluoride release from the FTLA components. Dentin specimens with simulated hypersensitive surfaces were treated with APF containing tannic acid. After which, the specimens received lanthanum-chloride-with-powdered-fluoroapatite-glass-ceramics treatment. The specimens were subjected to toothbrush abrasion test up to 6,000 strokes. SEM observation revealed that dentinal tubules of the FTLA treated specimens were completely occluded w

Effect of oral calcium and calcium + fluoride treatments on mouse bone properties during suspension.

The bone effects of oral dosages of calcium chloride with or without supplementary sodium fluoride were assessed in antiorthostatically suspended mice. Two calcium dosages were used to replace half (3.1 mM) or all(6.3 mM) of the dietary calcium lost due to reduced food intake by the suspended mice. Two groups of 6.3 mM CaCl2-treated mice were additionally treated with 0.25 or 2.5 mM NaF. The results indicate that supplementation of the mouse drinking water with calcium salts prevents bone changes induced by short-term suspension, while calcium salts in combination with fluoride are less effect

Abnormal bone mineralization after fluoride treatment in osteoporosis: a small-angle x-ray-scattering study.

Sodium fluoride treatment of osteoporosis is known to stimulate bone formation and to increase bone mass, but recent clinical trials failed to prove its antifracture effectiveness. The formation of bone with abnormal structure and, therefore, increased fragility is discussed as a possible explanation. Until now, however, exact information on the mineral structure of osteoporotic bone after fluoride treatment has been lacking. Bone biopsies were taken from three patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis before and after fluoride treatment (60 mg NaF/day for 1-2 years), from one patient with iat…

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Intestinal Sleeve Implants for the Treatment of Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.

Currently, treatment of diabetes and associated obesity involves Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy to reduce the absorption of nutrients from the intestine to achieve blood glucose control. However, the surgical procedure and subsequent recovery are physically and psychologically burdensome for patients, with possible side effects, so alternative treatments are being developed. In this study, two methods, solution casting and machine direction orientation (MDO), were used to prepare intestinal implants made of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) film and implant them into the duodenu

Integrated physicochemical and biological treatment process for fluoride and phosphorus removal from fertilizer plant wastewater.

The phosphate fertilizer industry produces highly hazardous and acidic wastewaters. This study was undertaken to develop an integrated approach for the treatment of wastewaters from the phosphate industry. Effluent samples were collected from a local phosphate fertilizer producer and were characterized by their high fluoride and phosphate content. First, the samples were pretreated by precipitation of phosphate and fluoride ions using hydrated lime. The resulting low- fluoride and phosphorus effluent was then treated with the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process to monitor the

Enhancing Silver Diamine Fluoride Treatment: The Role of Zinc in Reducing Discoloration and Maintaining Antimicrobial Efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: Silver diammine fluoride (SDF; often incorrectly referred to as silver diamine fluoride in the literature) is an effective, minimally invasive treatment for dental caries; however, its widespread adoption is hindered by significant black discoloration of treated dentin. Zinc, known for its antimicrobial properties and potential interactions with silver compounds, may offer a novel approach to reducing SDF-induced staining while preserving its cariostatic effects. This laboratory study investigated the impact of a zinc pretreatment followed by SDF application on dentin discolorati
