PURPOSE: To determine the effects of R-DOI, a selective 5-HT2 agonist, on intraocular pressure (IOP) and aqueous humor dynamics in monkeys.
METHODS: Normotensive cynomolgus monkeys (n = 8) were treated topically once daily with four 5-muL drops of 0.5% R-DOI in one eye, vehicle in the opposite eye. Over the past few years, the use of mitomycin C (MMC) to reduce surgical failures following filtering procedures has largely increased. After topical application, significant amounts of MMC can be detected intraocularly. Progressive endothelial cell loss and endothelial cell loss induced at the time of surgery occurs in all eyes with rigid anterior chamber intraocular lenses (IOLs). Eyes with surgical tuck or late ovaling of the pupil following surgery have greater yearly rates of cell loss than eyes that have no complications. We evaluated changes in aqueous outflow and blood-aqueous barrier (BAB) disruption after cataract surgery in two randomly selected groups of eyes. In one group, a high-viscosity viscoelastic was used for intraocular lens (IOL) implantation; in the other, a low-viscosity viscoelastic. Fluorophotometry was used to evaluate aqueous humor dynamics five to seven hours after IOL implantation. Following extracapsular cataract and posterior chamber implant surgery the sequential recovery of the blood-aqueous barrier was measured by anterior segment fluorophotometry. The influence of posterior chamber lens implantation on the aqueous humor dynamics was investigated using anterior chamber fluorophotometry before and 9 weeks after cataract extraction and IOL implantation. Thirty-four patients finished the protocol. Repeated topical administration of 2.5% trifluormethazolamide, a halogenated derivative of methazolamide, resulted in a unilateral decrease in intraocular pressure in rabbits. OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of lacrimal gland removal on basal and reflex tear production and on the ocular surface in the squirrel monkey.
METHODS: Unilateral main lacrimal gland removal in 6 squirrel monkeys was followed by Schirmer testing, slit-lamp examination with fluorescein, and collection of basal and reflex (stimulated) tears for analysis of tear protein spectra between 0 and 20 kd, as well as histological evaluation.
