Three patients are described, and they provide further evidence that deficiency of folic acid and vitamin B(12) may sometimes affect small intestinal function. Malabsorption of both xylose and vitamin B(12) returned to normal in one patient after treatment of a megaloblastic anaemia due to dietary deficiency of folic acid. Impaired absorption of vitamin B(12) was corrected by vitamin B(12) therapy in the other two patients. The initial cause of the vitamin B(12) deficiency in one patient was not apparent, but she was taking Gynovlar 21, which may have been an aetiological factor. In the third

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia is a significant contributor to maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. However, its etiology remains elusi … re-eclampsia produced inconsistent results. The research aims to explore the potential link between folic acid deficiency and the development of pre-eclampsia-like symptoms in rat models, shedding light on the possible role of one-carbon metabolic pathways in the etiology of pre-eclampsia.
METHODS: Establishing a rat model with severe and moderate folate deficiency by …

Folic acid deficiency is the second most common cause of anemia in our environment, after anemia secondary to iron deficiency. Folates are essential components of human and animal diet. Folic acid is mainly in poliglutamate form, and it is hydrolyzed in the proximal jejunum. It is important to identify adequately the exact vitamin deficiency that causes megaloblastic anemia, because vitamin B12 administration in folate deficiency may correct partially megaloblastic alterations, but administration of folic acid in cobalamin deficient patients improves haematological parameters but deteriorates …

A 34-year-old woman developed megaloblastic anemia and peripheral polyneuropathy following the use of oral contraceptives for 4 years. Low levels of folic acid and vitamin B12 were found. Both the complete recovery after therapy with the vitamins, and the absence of other causes of vitamin B12 and folate deficiency, suggest that the vitamin deficiencies were caused by the oral contraceptives and resulted in the rare combination of megaloblastic anemia and polyneuropathy. The poor response to vitamin B12 alone, and the development of anemia and polyneuropathy 4 months after cessation of vitamin

It is widely accepted that maternal folic acid (FA) deficiency during pregnancy is a risk factor for abnormal development. The tongue, with multiple genes working together in a coordinated cascade in time and place, has emerged as a target organ for testing the effect of FA during development. A FA-deficient (FAD) diet was administered to eight-week-old C57/BL/6J mouse females for 2-16 weeks. Pregnant dams were sacrificed at gestational day 17 (E17). The tongues and heads of 15 control and 210 experimental fetuses were studied. In the tongues, the maximum width, base width, height and area wer

A cross-sectional community-based study with analytic component was conducted among Ethiopian women during June-July 2005 to assess the magnitude of anaemia and deficiencies of iron and folic acid and to compare the factors responsible for anaemia among anaemic and non-anaemic cases. In total, 970 women, aged 15-19 years, were selected systematically for haematological and other important parameters. The overall prevalence of anaemia, iron deficiency, iron-deficiency anaemia, deficiency of folic acid, and parasitic infestations was 30.4%, 50.1%, 18.1%, 31.3%, and 13.7% respectively. Women who

In the present work we measured blood levels of total homocysteine ((t)Hcy), vitamin B(12) and folic acid in patients with Parkinson s disea … aled that the major determinant of the increased plasma concentrations of (t)Hcy in PD patients was folic acid deficiency, whereas in controls (t)Hcy levels were mainly determined by plasma vitamin B(12) concentrations. We also observed that alcohol consumption, gender and L-DOPA treatment did not significantly alter plasma (t)Hcy, folic acid and vitamin B(12) levels i …

Although macrocytosis might occur with frequency in patients with thyroid disorders, there is controversial information on the metabolic rel … as associated with TSH levels. These results do not support the routine screening for either B12 or folic acid deficiency in subjects with subclinical disturbances of thyroid function, though we can not rule out that it might still be useful in patients with overt thyroid dysfunction.

Rat embryos (9.5-day-old) were cultured for 48 hours in serum from diet-induced folic-acid-deficient rats. Resultant embryos were frequently abnormal; many were growth retarded and exhibited a defect in the turning mechanism that inverts the embryo from ventrally to dorsally convex. Affected embryos displayed abnormal twisting or kinking of the neural tube. Gross anaemia was also frequently observed, and the protein content of the embryos was markedly less than that of embryos grown in normal rat serum. Supplementation of the deficient serum with folic acid improved growth and greatly reduced

Tissue deficiency of folic acid, as measured by a red cell folate level below 150 ng. per milliliter, was present in 16 per cent of 110 sequential pregnant women at the time of their first prenatal visit to a municipal clinic. A further 14 per cent of subjects had red cell folate levels in the range "suggestive but not conclusive for tissue folate depletion" (150 to 199 ng. per milliliter). All of the subjects were from low-income families in New York City and most were black or of Puerto Rican origin. Serum folate levels showed good general correlation with red cell folate but were of less va

The authors report a case of myelopathy associated with macrotic anemia. The prior inefficacy of treatment with B1, B6 and B12 vitamins, in spite of a normal Schilling test, suggested the possibility of folate deficiency, the concentration of which was found very low in the serum (1.5 mg/ml). The addition of folic acid to the vitamins already administered without success, was followed by rapid recovery of the anemia and a frank neurological improvement maintained after 10 months follow-up. The rare similar cases observed in the world literature are analysed here. The other neurological manifes

OBJECTIVE: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are one of the most common and serious birth defects in human beings caused by genetic and environmental factors. Folate insufficiency is involved in the occurrence of NTDs and folic acid supplementation can prevent NTDs occurrence, however, the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood.
METHODS: We established cell and animal models of folic acid deficiency to detect the methylation modification and expression levels of genes by MassARRAY and real-time PCR, respectively. Results and conclusion: In the present study, we found firstly that in human fo…

OBJECTIVES/DESIGN: Comparative cross-sectional study to assess homocysteine and vitamin status in carriers of CBS gene mutations.
METHOD: Subjects included 34 parents (13 males, 21 females, age 27-59 years) of 30 patients with classical homocystinuria due to homozygous cystathionine beta-synthase deficiency. Control subjects were matched for gender and age (13 males, 21 females, age 25-59 years). All subjects were of Qatari origin, had normal liver and renal function tests and had not taken drugs or vitamin supplements prior to the study. The concentrations of homocysteine, folic acid and vit

The case-history of a pregnant woman with a life-threatening thrombocytopenia, due to folic acid deficiency, caused by an extremely low dietary intake is described. As folic acid deficiency manifests itself in a variety of ways, its clinical features are not always easily recognized. Timely recognition is important because of the rapid progressive nature of the disorder, especially in pregnancy, and because rapid improvement is achieved by simple treatment: supplementation of the deficiency. This is well illustrated in the patient described in this case report. A short review of the literature…
