Patterns of distribution of allergic contact dermatitis follow a certain order in time. The disease starts at a given site, most often as a unilateral acrodermatitis and, should it become chronic, spreads locally. The subsequent pattern of distribution varies depending on the primary site and the type--occupational or otherwise--of the disease. In this study data collected two decades ago are confronted with the more recent ones relating to 1055 cases of occupational allergic contact dermatitis. Examination of this material brought to light no essential difference between the older and more re

Plantar dermatoses (PD) are common, occurring either spontaneously on healthy skin or developing secondarily from previously established foot disease. PD share similar symptoms and morphology, making them challenging to differentiate. A few of the most frequently encountered PD include tinea pedis, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic dermatitis (or recurrent vesicular palmoplantar dermatitis), and juvenile plantar dermatosis. This review offers practical advice for diagnosing and treating the most common PD in the primary care office.

Aquagenic papulotranslucent acrokeratoderma isa rare condition with the development of white-totransluscentpapules and plaques after exposureto water. While the first report was described asan autosomal dominant hereditary condition, there have since been acquired cases reported inassociation with cystic fibrosis, with prior exposureto a drug, or as an idiopathic condition. We presenta 24-year-old man with acquired aquagenicpapulotranslucent acrokeratoderma that has beenpresent since infancy, without a family history, without prior drug exposure, and without anypersonal or family history of cyst

Palmoplantar lichen planus (PPLP) is an uncommon variant of lichen planus that affects the palms and soles. Clinical findings are varied although they have been conceptualized into two large groupings, an erythematous scaly pattern and a hyperkeratotic pattern. Histopathologic features are those of classic LP. We present a case of PPLP that improved with methotrexate after failing treatment with acitretin.

We have updated our clinical classification on onychomycosis (2011) to render it of more practical value for the clinician. It should provide a better understanding of onychomycosis and facilitate an improved approach to treatment, taking into account, for example, the link between the proximal subungual variety and some superficial forms emerging from beneath the cuticle.

We present a case of acrokeratosis verruciformis of Hopf in a 58-year-old woman with multiple, skin-colored, flat-topped, hyperkeratotic papules on the dorsal aspects of the hands and feet. Her lesions appeared at age 13 and her son developed similar lesions at about the same age. Acrokeratosis verruciformis of Hopf is a rare genodermatosis, which is distinct from keratosis follicularis; sporadic cases have also been described. Management options include cryotherapy, keratolytics, superficial ablation with CO2 or Nd:YAG lasers, topical retinoids, and acitretin.

A pruritic vesicular, pustular or squamous eruption confined to the lateral aspect of fingers or toes corresponds to the overall pattern of dysidrosis. Such a clinical pattern is defined by its peculiar topography. It is encountered in diseases resulting from various etiologies. Thus, conceptually, dysidrosis is a common clinical aspect shared by diverse disorders related to different etiologies and pathomechanisms. The dermatopathological assessment and the patch test procedure shed some light on this nosological diversity. Allergic contact dermatitis, irritation dermatitis, mycids, alteratio

A total of 1742 clinically suspected samples was examined for the incidence and distribution of dermatophytes in the Republic of Macedonia from June 2007 to Jan. 2009. 600 dermatophytes were isolated and identified. In the studied period 9 different dermatophyte species were isolated, namely Trichophyton rubrum (48.83%), Microsporum canis (20%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale (16.83%), Epidermophyton floccosum (4.17%), Trichophyton verrucosum (3.83%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes (3%), Trichophyton violaceum (1.67%), Microsporum ferrugineum (1%) and Microspor

INTRODUCTION: Palmar or plantar circumscribed hypokeratosis is a remarkable clinicopathologic entity described in 2002. It consists in a well demarcated decrease in thickness of the stratum corneum, that can be clinically mistaken for Bowen's disease or porokeratosis. We present a classical plantar localisation and a more original case on the dorsum of the finger, together with a microscopic and immunohistochemical study.
CASE REPORTS: Case 1. A 65-year-old man was seen 15 years after a first consultation for a well demarcated 1.5cm erythematous lesion localised on the border of his left foot

The misdiagnosis of onychomycosis delays the proper treatment of the nail condition. Nail histomycology refers to the microscopic examination of histologic sections prepared from nail clippings for the purpose of detecting the presence of fungi. This laboratory method is the most sensitive procedure for the diagnosis of onychomycosis. It allows for the visualization of the precise location of the invasive fungus inside the nail apparatus. The method also distinguishes various shapes of the fungal cells, in particular filamentous fungi, yeasts, conidia, and sporodochia. The correct diagnosis pr

BACKGROUND: The incidence and clinical significance of other than dermatophytes fungi or moulds causing onychomycosis is unknown, because they may be colonising organisms rather than pathogen. This report presents the results of a study conducted between 1997 and 1999 to determine the incidence and aetiology of onychomycosis by non-dermatophytic filamentous fungi in the population of Cádiz (Spain).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Diagnosis of onychomycosis was performed by direct microscopic examination, culture and, some times, by histologic examination, on samples from 610 patients with clinical susp

Onychomycosis, a persistent fungal infection affecting the toenails and fingernails, can interfere with standing, walking, and exercising. Associated physical impairments can result in paresthesia, pain, discomfort, and loss of manual dexterity. Patients may also suffer from loss of self-esteem and social interaction. A definitive diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment, because many other skin and nail disorders mimic onychomycosis. Diagnosis involves microscopic potassium hydroxide preparation, cultures, nail biopsy, and histologic analysis. Treatment can include topical and systemic an

We describe two boys affected by Down syndrome (DS), who showed milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis (MICC). The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by histological examination. All reported cases are reviewed and compared. Syringeal structures play a significant part in the pathogenesis of this dermatosis. MICC appears to be a poorly recognized condition which, rarely, is associated with DS.

A review of the literature for the last 20 years shows no monumental advances in the diagnosis or treatment of the disease; however, there have been some very intriguing insights into the causes. The physical and emotional aspect of the skin condition is well known but the genetic, vascular, and neurogenic implications are of interest.

Over 4000 cases of fungal nail, sole and palm infection recorded during a three-year study period were investigated to determine the prevalence and significance of etiologic agents other than dermatophytes and yeasts. Littman's oxgall agar, which permitted isolation of cycloheximide-sensitive species but restricted overgrowth by fast growing contaminants, was used to promote isolation of these disease agents. Non-dermatophytic filamentous fungi made up 2.3% of the confirmed etiologic agents obtained overall, and constituted 3.3% of the agents obtained from nail infections. The most common spec
