Vitamin E and Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

This narrative mini-review discusses vitamin E levels in subjects with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). Vitamin E may be reduced in subjects with DFUs, but this finding is inconsistent. Its administration appears to benefit patients with DM, delaying the onset of complications, including DFUs. There is also evidence that it may promote DFUs healing. Nonetheless, further studies are required to confirm these promising results and estimate vitamin E administration's costeffectiveness.

Folic Acid and Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remain a major cause of morbidity. This narrative mini-review aimed to investigate the potential role of folic acid (FA) in DFUs. Individuals with DFUs exhibit lower levels of FA and lower daily intake, compared to those without DFUs. There is preliminary evidence that FA administration may contribute to improved DFUs healing. In this context, regular evaluation of dietary FA intake may prove important towards reduction or even prevention of DFUs. However, data are still limited and further research is required to enable definitive conclusions and any recommendation…

Mechanisms of diabetic foot ulceration: A review.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are associated with complex pathogenic factors and are considered a serious complication of diabetes. The potential mechanisms underlying DFUs have been increasingly investigated. Previous studies have focused on the three aspects of diabetic peripheral vascular disease, neuropathy, and wound infections. With advances in technology, researchers have been gradually conducting studies using immune cells, endothelial cells, keratinocytes, and fibroblasts, as they are involved in wound healing. It has been reported that the upregulation or downregulation of molecular si…

Update on management of diabetic foot ulcers.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious complication of diabetes that results in significant morbidity and mortality. Mortality rates associated with the development of a DFU are estimated to be 5% in the first 12 months, and 5-year morality rates have been estimated at 42%. The standard practices in DFU management include surgical debridement, dressings to facilitate a moist wound environment and exudate control, wound off-loading, vascular assessment, and infection and glycemic control. These practices are best coordinated by a multidisciplinary diabetic foot wound clinic. Even with this c…

Managing Patients With Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remain a challenge for clinicians despite decades of study. Clinicians now realize that healing strategies should focus on the patient as well as the ulcer. The search continues for interventions that affected individuals and their care providers can count on to heal and manage these challenging wounds, stopping the dreaded progression to amputation and death. The path to healing a patient's DFU often requires multidisciplinary care, including consistent offloading of insensate areas, endocrinologic and metabolic control, and improved circulation. The studies review…

[Emergencies in diabetic foot ulcers management].

Emergencies in diabetic foot ulcers management. Treatment of diabetic foot ulcers must be organized in specialized care centers to improve healing rates and reduce amputation rates. Some frequent and especially urgent situations will be described: infection, ischemia, Charcot joint. Other less common pathologies will be mentioned: bacterial arthritis, tenosynovitis, necrotizing fasciitis, gas gangrene. French diabetic foot clinics are easily found online.

[Characteristics of foot ulcers in diabetic patients].

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic foot syndrome is often presented as a skin lesion in diabetics. The aim of our study was to analyse foot ulcerations in diabetics, together with ethiopatogenesis, location and grade of impairment. METHODS: We analysed foot ulcerations in 124 diabetics who attended outpatient foot clinic, or were hospitalized in the period from 1996 to 2006. Basic neuropathy screening examination was made with cotton wisp, pin-prick, tuning fork, and monofilament. Beside the evaluation of the presence of pedal pulses, the ankle-brachial pressure index was measured. If the infection of fo…

Diabetic foot ulcers--a comprehensive review.

As the incidence of diabetes mellitus is increasing globally, complications related to this endocrine disorder are also mounting. Because of the large number of patients, foot ulcers developing in the feet of diabetics have become a public health problem. The predisposing factors include abnormal plantar pressure points, foot deformities, and minor trauma. Vulnerable feet usually already have vascular insufficiency and peripheral neuropathy. The complex nature of these ulcers deserves special care. The most useful prognostic feature for healing remains the ulcer depth, ulcers heal poorly if th…

An overview of diabetes-related foot ulcers.

The escalating prevalence of diabetes mellitus presents concern due to its widespread organ damage, including the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves, leading to severe complications such as heart attacks, strokes, blindness, and diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFUs). Management in the community setting should be focused on prevention, assessment and patient-centred care. By understanding the complex aetiology, risk factors, and classification of DFUs, along with utilising evidence-based interventions like the Wound, Infection and Ischemia (WIfI) system, we can streamline care. Neuropathy, peripher…

Diabetic Foot Ulcers in Geriatric Patients.

Care for the patient with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) entails understanding the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and a systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment. The authors will review elements of DFU in geriatric patients including the pathophysiology of diabetes, epidemiology and management of DFU in the context of developing a Plan for Healing. The authors will discuss comprehensive principles of a Plan for Healing, which applies to all aspects of chronic wounds.

Review of Diabetic Foot Ulcers-Reply.

Previous research has shown that observers can make reliable judgments about the relative mass of moving objects that collide in animated displays. One popular explanation of this is that observers' judgments are based on an internal model of Newtonian dynamics. An alternative explanation is that these judgments are based on measurable optical properties that are correlated with relative mass. To better understand this issue, the present investigation reanalyzed the data from three previous studies by Mitko and Fischer (2023), Sanborn et al. (2013), and Todd and Warren (1982), and it replicate

[Management of a foot ulcer in a patient with diabetes].

Despite a benign appearance, any foot injury occurring in a patient with diabetes requires multidisciplinary management if dreaded complications such as amputation are to be avoided. From a pathophysiological point of view, foot ulcer generally results from the combination of lower extremity neuropathy, mechanical overload, immunopathy and vascular insufficiency. The treatment associates in all cases an offloading and one or more debridements. Depending on the grade of the ulcer, adjuvant treatments, such as antibiotic therapy, revascularization, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be indicated.

Advancing pharmacotherapy for diabetic foot ulcers.

INTRODUCTION: Standard treatment for diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) includes off-loading, debridement, moisture balance, management of infection and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) as well as adequate glycemic control. The outcomes so far are unsatisfactory. AREAS COVERED: Herein, the authors provide an outline of newer pharmacological agents for the management of DFUs and give their expert perspectives on future treatment strategies. EXPERT OPINION: Evidence-based healthcare calls for high quality evidence from large RCTs before the implementation of new guidelines for the management of DFUs…

Prevention and management of diabetic foot ulcers.

As part of an annual foot review, trained and competent personnel should examine patients' feet to detect risk factors for ulceration. Foot examination with shoes and stockings removed should include: palpation of foot pulses; testing foot sensations using 10g monofilament or vibration; inspection for significant callus or deformed nails; inspection for any structural deformity; asking about any previous ulceration; checking for signs of ulceration; asking about any pain; and inspecting footwear. Following assessment, a foot risk classification score should be given. The person with diabetes s
