Forensic criteria, clinical and theoretical issues of the indication of court-ordered treatment: A comparative survey among experts in forensic psychiatry and sentencing judges in France.

Following the French law n° 98-468 of 17 June 1998 relative to the prevention of sexual offenses and the protection of minors, social and judicial follow-up and court-ordered treatment were introduced with the aim of reinforcing the prevention of recidivism. A prospective study using the Monroe Dyscontrol Scale as a measure of impulsivity in referrals to a forensic psychiatry service.

Many people referred to a forensic psychiatry service will have displayed impulsive aggression. There are few validated tests to allow a quantitative measurement of such behaviour. The Monroe Dyscontrol Scale (MDS) arose from work that recognized certain symptoms in people who had impulsive aggression, the so-called 'episodic dyscontrol syndrome'. This study uses the MDS in two groups of people who were referred to a forensic psychiatry service. One was a group of 'mentally disordered' in-patients, and the other comprised consecutive referrals to the service. The groups were compared and certa…

Is Virtually Everything Possible? The Relevance of Ethics and Human Rights for Introducing Extended Reality in Forensic Psychiatry.

Extended Reality (XR) systems, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), provide a digital simulation either of a complete environment, or of particular objects within the real world. Today, XR is used in a wide variety of settings, including gaming, design, engineering, and the military. In addition, XR has been introduced into psychology, cognitive sciences and biomedicine for both basic research as well as diagnosing or treating neurological and psychiatric disorders. In the context of XR, the simulated 'reality' can be controlled and people may safely learn to cope with thei

European Psychiatric Association (EPA) guidance on forensic psychiatry: Evidence based assessment and treatment of mentally disordered offenders.

Forensic psychiatry in Europe is a specialty primarily concerned with individuals who have either offended or present a risk of doing so, and who also suffer from a psychiatric condition. These mentally disordered offenders (MDOs) are often cared for in secure psychiatric environments or prisons. In this guidance paper we first present an overview of the field of forensic psychiatry from a European perspective. We then present a review of the literature summarising the evidence on the assessment and treatment of MDOs under the following headings: The forensic psychiatrist as expert witness, ri…

If until the 1970s the practice of imposing responsibility for mentally ill individuals shows itself as a humanism, it occurs more within a security perspective today.

Analysis of data for a sample comprising every second subject (266/533) who underwent forensic psychiatric examination in Sweden during a 12-month period (July 1995-June 1996) showed 50 per cent to have been in contact with psychiatric services during the 6-month period prior to the index offence. The study population was characterised by significantly higher than average proportions of women and of subjects suffering from psychotic disorder and/or serious psychiatric disorder as defined by the mental health act. However, there does not appear to be an overview of current developments available in the field, which may be an obstacle to clinicians considering the use of VR in their clinical practice. Objectives: Current, clinically relevant …
