Pathological fractures in primary bone sarcomas.

Pathological fractures in patients with primary bone sarcomas should not be considered an absolute indication for amputation. Initial fracture management should include cast immobilisation or external fixation avoiding tumour-cell dissemination. The extent of fracture displacement and the type of fracture stabilisation may affect the outcome of patients with primary bone sarcomas presenting with pathological fractures. Patients with high-grade primary bone sarcomas should be treated by neo-adjuvant chemotherapy, and limb-salvage surgery. Pathological fractures in chemo-resistant primary bone s

Treatments for feline long bone fractures.

Orthopedic injuries in cats occur frequently and are amenable to a variety of surgical and nonsurgical treatment options. Complications and delayed healing have been reported and can be attributed to improper fixation. Clinicians have numerous options ranging from external to internal fixation, casting, cage rest, and limb amputation. The goals of reducing patient morbidity and obtaining a return to normal function warrant the selection of an appropriate treatment based on the nature of the lesion, available expertise, and directives of the client.

[Pathologic bone fractures: definition and classification].

A bone fracture is a complete or incomplete discontinuity of bone caused by a direct or indirect force. A pathological bone fracture is a bone fracture which occurs without adequate trauma and is caused by a preexistent pathological bone lesion. Causes include resorption of bone mass (osteoporosis), reduction of bone quality (osteomalacia, osteonecrosis), insufficient bone production (osteogenesis imperfecta, fibrous dysplasia), augmented bone resorption (giant cell granulomas, aneurysmal bone cyst), pathological bone remodelling (Paget's disease), or local bone destruction due to tumorous gro

Retinal lesions following long bone fractures.

Patients with long bone fractures are at risk for the fat embolism syndrome (FES). Although an estimated 50% of patients with overt FES have retinal abnormalities, the overall incidence of fundus lesions in patients with long bone fractures has not been studied. We examined 100 consecutive patients who had suffered long bone or pelvic fractures in the absence of head, abdominal, or thoracic injury, and who had no other diseases associated with retinopathy. Only one patient had visual symptoms. Cotton-wool spots and retinal hemorrhages were observed in four patients, none of whom were suspected

Bone mineral content and fragility fractures.

In 249 patients with fractures characteristic of bone fragility, i.e. femoral neck fracture, vertebral crush fracture, fracture of the upper end of the humerus, Colles' fracture, fracture of the lateral condyle of the tibia and various ankle fractures, and forearm bone mineral content was measured by gamma absorptiometry. Vertebral crush fracture, fracture of the upper end of the femur and fracture of the distal end of the forearm are associated with a generally decreased bone mineral mass. In young women with femoral neck fracture the difference between fracture cases and control cases was gr

Bone health in neuromyelitis optica: Bone mineral density and fractures.

BACKGROUND: The bone health in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder with aquaporin-4 immunoglobulin G antibodies (NMOSD-AQP4) have not been fully evaluated. To evaluate the prevalence of fractures and bone loss in patients with NMOSD-AQP4 compared to healthy controls and patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and to identify the risk factors associated with fractures and low bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with NMOSD-AQP4. METHODS: Seventy-one patients with NMOSD-AQP4 were included. The two control groups consisted of 213 age-, sex-, menopause-, and body mass index (BMI)-matched healt

Septal fracture in simple nasal bone fracture.

Nasal bone fractures are the most common type of facial fractures. Previous studies have shown that most nasal fractures involve the septum, which can provide an obstacle to the successful reduction of nasal bone fractures. In particular, septal fractures in combination with simple nasal bone fractures are usually unrecognized and untreated at the time of injury. Furthermore, systemized treatment protocols and diagnostic tools for septal fractures in the case of simple nasal bone fracture have not previously been presented. In this study, the clinical findings of septal fractures in cases of s
