Arousal effects on oscillatory dynamics in the non-human primate brain.

Arousal states are thought to influence many aspects of cognition and behavior by broadly modulating neural activity. Many studies have observed arousal-related modulations of alpha (~8 to 15 Hz) and gamma (~30 to 50 Hz) power and coherence in local field potentials across relatively small groups of brain regions. However, the global pattern of arousal-related oscillatory modulation in local field potentials is yet to be fully elucidated. We simultaneously recorded local field potentials in numerous cortical and subcortical regions in the primate brain and assessed oscillatory activity and int

Surge of neurophysiological coupling and connectivity of gamma oscillations in the dying human brain.

The brain is assumed to be hypoactive during cardiac arrest. However, animal models of cardiac and respiratory arrest demonstrate a surge of gamma oscillations and functional connectivity. To investigate whether these preclinical findings translate to humans, we analyzed electroencephalogram and electrocardiogram signals in four comatose dying patients before and after the withdrawal of ventilatory support. Two of the four patients exhibited a rapid and marked surge of gamma power, surge of cross-frequency coupling of gamma waves with slower oscillations, and increased interhemispheric functio

Oscillatory Neural Signatures of Visual Perception Across Developmental Stages in Individuals With 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Numerous behavioral studies have highlighted the contribution of visual perceptual deficits to the nonverbal cognitive profile of individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. However, the neurobiological processes underlying these widespread behavioral alterations are yet to be fully understood. Thus, in this paper, we investigated the role of neural oscillations toward visuoperceptual deficits to elucidate the neurobiology of sensory impairments in deletion carriers. METHODS: We acquired 125 high-density electroencephalography recordings during a visual grating task in a group of

Painful cutaneous laser stimuli induce event-related gamma-band activity in the lateral thalamus of humans.

Although the thalamus is an important module in "pain networks," there are few studies of the effect of experimental pain upon thalamic oscillations. We have now examined the hypothesis that, during a series of painful cutaneous laser stimuli, thalamic signals will show stimulus-related gamma-band spectral activity, which is modulated by attention to vs. distraction from the painful stimulus. When the series of laser stimuli was presented, attention was focused by counting the laser stimuli (count laser task), while distraction was produced by counting backward (count back plus laser task). We

Multiple, not just Beta-Gamma, phase-amplitude couplings are associated with Parkinson's disease and related intervention effects.

OBJECTIVE: 1) To evaluate the importance of various EEG Phase Amplitude Couplings (PACs) in predicting motor vigor (MV) in Parkinson's Disease (PD). 2) To determine the effects of dopaminergic medication and non-invasive galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) on MV-related PACs. METHODS: EEG data from 18 PD patients in comparison to 20 HC controls, executing a simple overlearned handgrip task was used, to identify PD-specific alterations. A deep learning model, PACNET, based on the VGG-16 architecture, was used to predict MV from a visual representation of different PACs. RESULTS: Delta-Beta,

A causal role for the precuneus in network-wide theta and gamma oscillatory activity during complex memory retrieval.

OBJECTIVE: Divalproex sodium can interact with many drugs in which combination treatments are used; it can increase plasma concentrations of some drugs by inhibiting metabolism and can increase the free fractions of other medications by displacing them from plasma proteins. The combination of risperidone and divalproex sodium is used to treat the manic phase of bipolar disorder. However, the effect of risperidone on the pharmacokinetics of valproate has not previously been systematically studied. The aims of this study were to determine the effect of repeated doses of oral risperidone on the p

Re-tuning the brain: The promise of 40 Hz sensory stimulation in Alzheimer's disease.

Growing interest in noninvasive neuromodulation posits 40 Hz sensory stimulation as a potential intervention for Alzheimer's disease. Early studies suggested that 40 Hz visual flicker entrains gamma activity and reduces amyloid pathology; however, later work found either absent entrainment or even increased amyloid burden, revealing strong dependence on disease stage, network integrity, and stimulation parameters. Initial clinical investigations suggest that 40 Hz stimulation is safe, well-tolerated, and capable of modulating cortical network dynamics and improving cognition, despite limited e

Oscillations in the dentate gyrus as a tool for the performance of the hippocampal functions: Healthy and epileptic brain.

The dentate gyrus (DG) is part of the hippocampal formation and is essential for important cognitive processes such as navigation and memory. The oscillatory activity of the DG network is believed to play a critical role in cognition. DG circuits generate theta, beta, and gamma rhythms, which participate in the specific information processing performed by DG neurons. In the temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), cognitive abilities are impaired, which may be due to drastic alterations in the DG structure and network activity during epileptogenesis. The theta rhythm and theta coherence are especially vu

Internal clock and the surgical ICU patient.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The alteration of circadian rhythms in the postoperative period has been demonstrated to influence the outcomes. With this narrative review we would revise how anesthesia, surgery and intensive care can interfere with the circadian clock, how this could impact on the postsurgical period and how to limit the disruption of the internal clock. RECENT FINDINGS: Anesthesia affects the clock in relation to the day-time administration and the type of anesthetics, N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists or gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors agonists. Surgery causes stress and trau

Brain connectivity in patients with dystonia during motor tasks.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate alterations of brain connectivity using multivariate electroencephalographic data to provide new insights of the brain connectivity dynamics of dystonia. APPROACH: We recorded electroencephalography (EEG) of patients with right upper limb idiopathic focal dystonia and paired controls during resting state, writing-from-memory, and finger-tapping tasks. We applied power spectrum analyses considering the mu, beta and gamma rhythms of the motor cortex and analyzed brain connectivity networks and microstates (MS). MAIN RESULTS: The power spectra results s

Theta-gamma coupling as a cortical biomarker of brain-computer interface-mediated motor recovery in chronic stroke.

Chronic stroke patients with upper-limb motor disabilities are now beginning to see treatment options that were not previously available. To date, the two options recently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration include vagus nerve stimulation and brain-computer interface therapy. While the mechanisms for vagus nerve stimulation have been well defined, the mechanisms underlying brain-computer interface-driven motor rehabilitation are largely unknown. Given that cross-frequency coupling has been associated with a wide variety of higher-order functions involved in learning and

The Electroencephalographic Brainwave Spectrum, Mindful Meditation, and Awareness: Hypothesis.

It is hypothesized that being mindfully aware is a spontaneous state of being. It is imbued with joy, peace and happiness. Such a state is periodically revealed during restful attentiveness or presence. It is also associated with spontaneous brain alpha activity of 8-13 Hz. In deep nonrapid eye movement sleep, there is synchronous delta activity at a coherent frequency of 0.1 Hz. Both of these brainwave ground states are spontaneous, calm and effortless. When any physical or mental effort is made, the alpha rhythm is desynchronized, and it is superposed by faster brain waves of beta (13-30 Hz)

Global functional coupling of resting EEG rhythms is related to white-matter lesions along the cholinergic tracts in subjects with amnesic mild cognitive impairment.

We tested the hypothesis that global functional coupling of resting cortical electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms is abnormal in amnesic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients with remarkable lesions along the cholinergic white-matter tracts. We used the eyes-closed resting EEG data (10-20 montage) of the same groups of 28 healthy elderly (Nold) and 57 MCI subjects of a previous reference study. The estimation of the cholinergic lesion was performed with a validated semi-automatic algorithm based on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequences on MRI. The MCI patients were divided into gro

Deep brain stimulation-entrained gamma oscillations in chronic home recordings in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: In Parkinson's disease, invasive brain recordings show that dopaminergic medication can induce narrowband gamma rhythms in the motor cortex and subthalamic nucleus, which co-fluctuate with dyskinesia scores. Deep brain stimulation can entrain these gamma oscillations to a subharmonic stimulation frequency. However, the incidence of entrainment during chronic therapeutic stimulation, its relationship to the basal ganglia stimulation site, and its effect on dyskinesia remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: Determine whether the behavioral effects and statistical properties of levodopa-induced g

Resting and task-modulated high-frequency brain rhythms measured by scalp encephalography in infants with tuberous sclerosis complex.

The electrophysiological correlates of cognitive deficits in tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) are not well understood, and modulations of neural dynamics by neuroanatomical abnormalities that characterize the disorder remain elusive. Neural oscillations (rhythms) are a fundamental aspect of brain function, and have dominant frequencies in a wide frequency range. The spatio-temporal dynamics of these frequencies in TSC are currently unknown. Using a novel signal decomposition approach this study investigated dominant cortical frequencies in 10 infants with TSC, in the age range 18-30 months, an

A compound pulsed magnetic field achieves superior cognitive benefits against Alzheimer's disease progression via multi-level restoration of neural oscillations and cerebral perfusion.

The link between impaired gamma oscillations and Alzheimer's disease (AD) has inspired therapies using rhythmic physical stimuli. However, given that cognition requires cross-frequency interactions like theta-gamma coupling, single-frequency stimulation may yield limited benefits. This study therefore applied a compound pulsed magnetic field (cPMF) with theta rhythm-modulated gamma frequency to evaluate its efficacy and mechanisms against AD pathology compared with single gamma-frequency pulsed magnetic field (sPMF). Local field potential results showed that cPMF outperformed sPMF by significa

Laminar recordings in frontal cortex suggest distinct layers for maintenance and control of working memory.

All of the cerebral cortex has some degree of laminar organization. These different layers are composed of neurons with distinct connectivity patterns, embryonic origins, and molecular profiles. There are little data on the laminar specificity of cognitive functions in the frontal cortex, however. We recorded neuronal spiking/local field potentials (LFPs) using laminar probes in the frontal cortex (PMd, 8A, 8B, SMA/ACC, DLPFC, and VLPFC) of monkeys performing working memory (WM) tasks. LFP power in the gamma band (50-250 Hz) was strongest in superficial layers, and LFP power in the alpha/beta

[Circadian variations in the incorporation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and tritiated taurine into the pineal body of CD mice].

Pineal uptake of two putative neurotransmitters, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and taurine, was investigated during the 24 h-cycle in mice kept in long (14L/10D) or short (10L/14D) photoperiods. Tritiated mediators were intraperitoneally injected and their concentration both in pineal gland and cerebellum were measured at several times along the nycthemere. A circadian rhythm of exogenous GABA uptake was observed in mice kept in long photoperiods: GABA uptake was high during the night, when the gland was active and low during the day. It corresponded to the pineal cycle of indoleamine synthes

Gamma and beta power and the 1/f slope vary across a spectrum of depression severity.

Depression is a highly prevalent mental disorder that impacts an individual's functioning, societal productivity, and quality of life. It is associated with disrupted neural activity (e.g., balance of excitation-inhibition) across networks implicated in emotional processing, such as between prefrontal and limbic regions. Gamma and beta activity measured with electroencephalography (EEG) differ between healthy individuals and those with depression, and predict treatment outcomes following pharmacological intervention. However, to date research has focussed on binary comparisons between individu

Decreased gamma band power and increased betagamma phaseamplitude coupling are characteristic of brain activity in patients with chronic spinal cord injury.

Neurophysiological biomarkers are needed to characterize the condition of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), for which effective symptomatic biomarkers are lacking. We recorded the resting-state magnetoencephalography data of 22 patients with SCI and 29 healthy controls. Power spectral density and phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) were assessed for six frequency bands using source-reconstructed cortical currents. Compared with controls, SCI patients exhibited significantly reduced gamma band power and increased beta-gamma PAC in the frontal cortex, including the primary motor area (q < 0.05,
