Incomplete Gardner's syndrome with blepharoptosis as the first symptom.

Gardner's syndrome (GS) is an autosomal dominant form of polyposis characterized by the presence of multiple polyps in the colon together with osseous tumors and soft-tissue tumors, such as epidermoid cysts and lipomas. An osteoma is a benign, osteogenic tumor and may be sporadic or related to GS. Here, we present a patient with a giant sino-orbital osteoma and blepharoptosis as the only symptom of incomplete GS. A 74-year-old woman, with no previous history of trauma or ophthalmic surgery, presented with a 2 years history of right blepharoptosis without diplopia. The results of slit-lamp and

The diagnosis and surgical treatment of patients with Gardner's syndrome.

Of one hundred and twenty-six patients with Gardner's syndrome, 60% showed soft tissue tumors, 32% showed osteomatosis, 67% polyposis, and 20% the complete triad. Bowel cancer developed in 32% of the patients. The frequency of other diseases in these patients showed fibrous tumors in 8%, and two patients with cancer of the ampulla of Vater; otherwise the diseases seen did not show any major variation from what might be expected for the group at risk. Laboratory evaluation has included the demonstration of increased fecal cholesterol and primary bile acids in these patients. The recommended sur

Oral and Maxillofacial Manifestations of Gardner Syndrome: A Literature Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Gardner syndrome (GS) is a rare autosomal condition of neoplasms and adenomatous polyps, particularly in the colon and rectum. If left untreated, these polyps develop into colon cancer. Thus, early diagnosis is crucial to improve prognosis among patients. However, the majority of the existing research is limited to single case studies, which lack generalizability. Therefore, this systematic review provides a thorough synthesis of GS-related dental symptoms along with diagnostic and treatment options, and outcomes in the published literature. METHODS: A comprehensive …

Primary cerebellopontine angle craniopharyngioma in a patient with Gardner syndrome.

Craniopharyngiomas usually involve the sella and suprasellar space. Ectopic craniopharyngiomas have rarely been reported at the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). We report a rare primary craniopharyngioma of the CPA without extension into the sellar region. The lesion was initially detected by MRI during investigation of multiple scalp fibromas. Multiple osteomas of the skull and face were detected 2years later, and colonic adenomatous polyposis was detected 4years later; typical features of Gardner syndrome. This is the third report of a primary CPA craniopharyngioma in a patient with Gardner syn…

Auto-erythrocyte sensitisation--the Gardner-Diamond syndrome. A case report.

A 34-year-old woman with a 3-year history of easy bruising of unexplained aetiology in anatomical sites consistent with self-infliction is described. Despite major surgery, the patient had never experienced inappropriate bleeding. Owing to psychological instability, the possibility of auto-erythrocyte sensitisation was considered; this was confirmed by subcutaneous injection of autologous red cells and haemolysate, which caused local tenderness and induration. This manifestation of Gardner-Diamond syndrome is unusual and is reported to draw attention to its existence and perhaps thereby avoid

Giant mediastinal thymolipoma in a patient with Gardner's syndrome.

Gardner's syndrome is a hereditary disorder inherited as an autosomal dominant with high penetrance and variable expression that is caused by a mutation of the adenomatous polyposis coli gene. It is characterized by gastrointestinal polyps associated with multiple osteomas, dental anomalies, and skin and soft tissue tumors. We present a case of 30-year-old female patient with Gardner's syndrome who presented with a giant mediastinal thymolipoma. The tumor was completely excised through a bilateral posterolateral thoracotomy. There was no recurrence after 20 months of follow-up. We therefore su

Gardner's syndrome, a rare combination in surgical practice.

A 45-year-old man presented to the emergency ward with features of intestinal obstruction of 2 days duration. On admission, there was abdominal distension and multiple sessile polyps found on digital rectal examination. In addition, a soft tissue swelling near the elbow and a bony swelling over scalp were noted. Abdominal radiography revealed gaseous distension of the small and large bowel, and ultrasound revealed diffuse, gas-filled bowel with sluggish peristalsis. The obstruction failed to resolve with conservative measures and at emergency laparotomy an irregular hard recto-sigmoid junction

Gardner's syndrome: a clinical and genetic study of a family.

OBJECTIVE: Gardner syndrome (GS) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder with almost complete penetrance (80%) and variable expression. GS is a variant of familial adenomatous polyposis and characterized by extracolonic manifestations including osteomas and soft tissue tumors (desmoid tumors, epidermoid cysts). We describe clinical and surgical approaches in a family in which the genetic disorder was diagnosed in 3 generations. STUDY DESIGN: The studied family underwent clinical history and instrumental and genomic studies. Two members of this family, affected with GS, underwent surgery for…
