BACKGROUND: Trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) is a potent disinfectant and bleaching agent widely used in industrial applications. When TCCA comes into contact with water, chlorine gas and hypochlorous acid are produced. Although acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) induced by chlorine gas inhalation is rare, if untreated, it can progress to severe respiratory failure. Currently, no standardized glucocorticoid dosing protocol exists for ARDS management in such cases.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report details the case of a 49-year-old male who developed ARDS following chlorine gas inhalation

Thiocyanate is an inorganic compound used in industrial applications. Here, we report a case of suicidal death due to acute thiocyanate overdose. A 44-year-old man who consumed an unknown amount of thiocyanate solution was transferred to the emergency room and died 2 h after admission. An autopsy was performed 2 days after death. General toxicological analysis of blood using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry found no drug or alcohol. Quantification using GC-MS post-derivatization with pentafluorobenzyl bromide revealed 2,290 and 1,9

Phosphine poisoning is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths per year in countries where access to this pesticide is unrestricted. Metal phosphides release phosphine gas on contact with moisture, and ingestion of these tablets most often results in death despite intensive support. A 36-year-old woman presented to a regional hospital after ingesting multiple aluminium phosphide pesticide tablets and rapidly developed severe cardiogenic shock. In this case, serendipitous access to an untested Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) service of a regional hospital effected a successfu

Zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) is a readily available rodenticide that, on contact with stomach acid and water, produces phosphine (PH3), a highly toxic gas. Household pets that ingest Zn3P2 often will regurgitate, releasing PH3 into the air. Veterinary hospital staff members treating such animals can be poisoned from PH3 exposure. During 2006-2011, CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) received reports of PH3 poisonings at four different veterinary hospitals: two in Michigan, one in Iowa, and one in Washington. Each of the four veterinary hospitals had treated a dog that

A 57-year-old male admitted as an emergency for mushroom poisoning with hypovolemic shock, acute renal injury (Cr 213 μmol/L) and metabolic acidosis (pH 7.1). Twenty-six hours ago, he consumed 4 caps of wild mushrooms and presented with acute gastroenteritis, generalized malaise and lower limbs jerk. On ICU admission, he developed ventricular defibrillation and was resuscitated with intubation and ventilation. In addition to plasma exchange and hemoperfusion therapy, the patient was managed with massive fluid and potassium replacement, vasopressors, activated charcoal, silymarin, penicillin G

Chlorine gas exposure occurs in chemical warfare, industrial and household accidents. In forensic science, the generation of chlorine gas by mixing sodium hypochlorite detergent and strong acid detergent cannot be overlooked because of the possibility of suicide method (NaClO + 2HCl → NaCl + H2O + Cl2). Though typical autopsy findings are obtained in chlorine exposure, such as pulmonary edema, useful biomarkers don't exist. In this research, we developed an analytical method of 3-chloro-l-tyrosine (Cl-Tyr) in blood as a novel marker of chlorine poisoning utilizing gas chromatography-mass spect

Ganoderma lucidum mushroom-mediated green synthesis of nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) is explored via a low-temperature (≤70 °C) wet chemical method. The role of Ganoderma lucidum mushroom extract in the reaction is to release the ganoderic acid molecules that tend to bind to the Ti4+ metal ions to form a titanium-ganoderic acid intermediate complex for obtaining TiO2 nanocrystallites (NCs), which is quite novel, considering the recent advances in fabricated gas sensing materials. The X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and Brunau

A simple gas-chromatographic method for the determination of 2,2-diethylallylacetamide is described. A saturated solution of ammonium sulfate is added to 1 ml serum and the mixture is extracted by chloroform. The organic phase is evaporated. The residue is dissolved in ethylacetate/acetic acid and injected into gas-chromatograph. The coefficient of variation for the precision in the series is 8,5%, the recovery 76%, the detection limit 3,2 mumol/l. The extract can be used for the determination of other hypnotics, e.g. barbiturates or carbromal. In cases of poisoning the concentration of 2,2-di

Mustard gas is known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic effects on animal and human cells. In this report, 1,632 male Japanese who worked in poison gas factories at some time between the years 1927 and 1945 were studied to determine comparative risk for development of cancer, the reference population being data on Japanese males overall. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) for lung cancer in workers directly and indirectly involved in the production of mustard gas was significantly elevated. In addition, SMR for lung cancer in worker who had worked for more than 5 years was also significant

Poisoning of companion animals resulting from exposure to analgesics intended for human use is a frequent and clinically relevant problem in veterinary practice, usually associated with administration without professional supervision. This can induce severe systemic toxicity. Diagnostic confirmation can be particularly challenging in cases presenting with nonspecific clinical signs or when conventional biological samples are unavailable. This case report describes the innovative use of earwax as a non-invasive biological matrix for toxicological confirmation in veterinary medicine. A 9-year-ol

Carbon monoxide poisoning is a potentially fatal yet frequently overlooked condition owing to its vague clinical manifestations and deceptively normal pulse oximetry readings. Exposure related to gas geysers represents an under-recognized source of carbon monoxide toxicity in the Indian subcontinent, particularly in confined and poorly ventilated bathroom environments. We describe two patients with acute carbon monoxide poisoning presenting with different neurological emergencies. The first case involved a 58-year-old man with a history of prior stroke who presented with altered mental status

The most common volatile substances used in suicide are liquefied petroleum gas mixtures, which consist of propane and butane gases mixed in different proportions. These substances are odourless and colourless. Some substances, such as ethanethiol, are added to liquefied petroleum gas mixtures to provide a garlic scent. The main causes of death in acute liquefied petroleum gas inhalation are cardiac arrest and asphyxia, but determining the manner of death is difficult. We present a case of a 30-year-old man found dead at home. On his head was a black plastic bag with a hole through which he ha

A 51-year-old man was found comatose in a decerebrate posture in a cottage. Brain MRI showed diffuse high-signal-intensity areas in the white matter on T 2-weighted and FLAIR images, and diffusion-weighted images showed marked diffuse high intensity areas in the white matter. Initially inflammatory demyelinating diseases were suspected and methylprednisolone pulse therapy was administered. However, no improvement was noted. On close inspection of the cottage, a gas generator was discovered in the poorly ventilated room. He was therefore suspected to have suffered from gas intoxication, includi

Evaluation of two suicidal helium inhalation cases is presented, comprising both conventional autopsy methods and postmortem computed tomography. Conventional postmortem examinations reveal no characteristic changes. Modern diagnostic techniques enabled to disclosethe presence of a very large amount of accumulated gas in all examined areas, including veins and arteries of the head, torso, lower extremities, heart chambers, and between muscle fibers in both cases. The changes due to possible putrefaction were taken into consideration - radiological alteration index was calculated. In forensic l

On-site tests based on immunoassay techniques are widely used for toxicologic screening analysis in patients with suspected poisoning. However, such assays usually have been validated using urine samples with known concentrations of the investigated substances. In the present investigation, on-site screening results were evaluated in a clinical setting. This was a retrospective study of patients with suspected poisoning from January to December 2003 in the emergency department of a tertiary urban hospital. Urine samples were analyzed using the Triage 8 panel and gas chromatography-mass spectro

Low-medium temperature NH3-SCR technology has been applied for years in municipal solid wastes incineration (MSWI) to control the emissions of nitrogen oxides. Unlike coal-fired flue gases, the tail gas from MSWI contains high levels of heavy metals in fly ash, especially the zinc species, which may harm SCR catalysts. As such, in this paper, the deactivation mechanism of different zinc species (ZnO, ZnSO4 and ZnCl2) on the Sb-CeZr2Ox catalysts and the co-effects of zinc species and gas-phase pollutants (including SO2 and HCl) were investigated. The experimental results indicated that the deac
