Ethionamide (ETH) is an antibiotic used for the treatment of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) (MDR-TB), and its use may be limited with the emergence of resistance in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis population. ETH resistance in M. tuberculosis is phenomenon independent or cross related when accompanied with isoniazid (INH) resistance. In most cases, resistance to INH and ETH is explained by mutations in the inhA promoter and in the following genes: katG, ethA, ethR, mshA, ndh, and inhA. We sequenced the above genes in 64 M. tuberculosis isolates (n = 57 ETH-resistant MDR-TB isolates

BACKGROUND: The global rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase–producing (ESBL) Salmonella undermines treatment efficacy and threatens public health, particularly in low-resource settings. In Nigeria, data on resistance mechanisms in clinical isolates remain sparse. This study evaluates whether resistance genes and antibiogram profiles can reliably predict MDR and ESBL phenotypes to enhance early detection and surveillance. METHODS: This cross-sectional, laboratory-based study was conducted from January-December 2024 and analyzed 265 clinical samples (241 faecal, 24

The issue of multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) presents a substantial challenge to global public health. Regrettably, the diagnosis of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) frequently necessitates an extended period or more extensive laboratory resources. The swift identification of MDR-TB poses a particularly challenging endeavor. To identify the biomarkers indicative of multi-drug resistance, we conducted a screening of the GSE147689 dataset for differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and subsequently conducted a gene enrichment analysis. Our analysis identified a total of 117 DEGs, con

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of wastewater from healthcare facilities has the potential to identify the emergence of multidrug-resistance (MDR) genes of public health importance. Specifically, wastewater surveillance (WWS) can provide sentinel surveillance of novel MDR genes or organisms in healthcare facilities, helping to direct targeted prevention efforts and monitor longitudinal effects. Several knowledge gaps need to be addressed before WWS can be used routinely for MDR surveillance, including determining optimal approaches to sampling, processing, and testing wastewater.

Salmonella enterica is a prevalent foodborne pathogen that can carry multidrug resistance (MDR) and pose a threat to human health. Identifying the genetics associated with MDR in Salmonella isolated from animals, foods, and humans can help determine sources of MDR in food animals and their impact on humans. S. enterica serovars most frequently carrying MDR from healthy animals, retail meats, and human infections in the United States and Canada were identified and isolates resistant to the largest number of antimicrobials were chosen. Isolates were from U.S. slaughter (n=12), retail (9), and hu

The multidrug resistance (mdr) gene family has been shown to encode a membrane glycoprotein, termed the P-glycoprotein, which functions as a drug efflux pump with broad substrate specificity. This multigene family is expressed in a tissue-specific fashion in a wide variety of normal and neoplastic tissues. The regulation of mdr gene expression in normal tissues is not understood. We have recently shown that mdr mRNA and the P-glycoprotein increases dramatically in the secretory luminal and glandular epithelium of the gravid murine uterus. This observation has suggested that mdr gene expression
