Use of a case-control study and geographic information systems to determine environmental and demographic risk factors for canine leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis is increasingly diagnosed as a re-emerging canine disease in the USA. Our objectives were to describe potential risk factors for canine leptospirosis infections in northern California, through the use of a case-control study, and to perform a spatial analysis to investigate which aspects of the landscape and land use patterns are important in the transmission of leptospirosis. Forty-three cases and 59 controls were enrolled into the study. Serological results showed that 17 (39.5%) of the 43 dog cases were infected with serovar pomona. Cases were 7.86 times more likely to have be

A study of the environmental determinants of malaria and schistosomiasis in the Philippines using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems.

Malaria and schistosomiasis are two water-related parasitic diseases affecting millions of people worldwide particularly tropical and subtropical countries. In the Philippines, malaria is found in 72 out of 78 provinces while schistosomiasis is endemic in 24 provinces. The Anopheles mosquito and the Oncomelania snail involved in the transmission of these diseases depend on certain environmental determinants that support mosquito and snail populations. This study, done for the first time in the Philippines, successfully showed how Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) c

Geographic information systems and spatial analysis of adult Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in the Middle Atlantic region of the U.S.A.

In the Middle Atlantic region of the U.S.A., the vector of Lyme disease, human granulocytic ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, and other human and veterinary pathogens is the black-legged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say. In 1997 and 1998, 663 adult I. scapularis ticks were collected from 320 transects spanning 66,400 km2 in five states of the Middle Atlantic region. Tick abundance patterns were clustered, with relatively high numbers along the coastal plain of the Chesapeake Bay, decreasing to the west and south. There were significant associations between tick abundance and land cover, distance to water,

Individual and Neighborhood Risk and Protective Factors of At-Risk and Problem Gambling: a Spatial Analysis Using Geographic Information Systems.

This study investigated the relationship between lottery gambling and postal codes where this gambling occurs, along with individual-level characteristics predicting at-risk or problem gambling (ARPG) among Massachusetts residents. A geographic information systems (GIS) spatial analysis was conducted to identify vulnerable areas based on neighborhood characteristics, lottery sales, and ARPG. GIS methods involved geocoding lottery agent addresses and integrating them into a geodatabase, enabling precise spatial analysis and visualization. This approach allowed us to examine spatial patterns in …

Communicating with Community: Using Geographic Information Systems to Convey the Impacts of Extreme Heat in Los Angeles Environmental Justice Communities.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related event in the United States, but it is not regarded with the same urgency as other natural disasters. By 2050, Los Angeles is expected to experience about three times as many extreme heat days compared to today, which will likely disproportionately affect environmental justice communities. One barrier to mitigating heat-related vulnerability in frontline communities is a lack of awareness of available resources and adaptation strategies. METHODS: The Prioritizing Local Action for Climate Equity (PLACE) study aims to bridge this knowle

The Use of Geographic Information Systems for Spatial Ecological Risk Assessments: An Example from the Athabasca Oil Sands Area in Canada.

There is an acknowledged need in ecotoxicology for methods that integrate spatial analyses in risk assessment. This has resulted in the emergence of landscape ecotoxicology, a subdiscipline of ecotoxicology. However, landscape ecotoxicology has yet to become common practice in risk assessment due to the underdevelopment of techniques and a lack of standardized methods. In the present study, we demonstrate how geographic information systems (GISs) can serve as a standardized platform to integrate data, assess spatial patterns of ecotoxicological data for multiple species, and assess relationshi…

Remote sensing and geographic information systems to predict the density of ruminants, hosts of Rift Valley fever virus in the Sahel.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an acute arboviral disease of domestic ungulates and humans in Africa and the Middle East. Since the first epidemic in 1987, Senegal has been confronted with recurrent episodes of the disease. This study aimed to model spatial distribution of ruminants in the agropastoral area of Barkedji (Senegal) where the disease is enzootic. In this Sahelian ecosystem, livestock distribution mainly depends on the availability of resources. Accordingly, remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) were used to seek environmental indicators of livestock density. A high-r…

Lessons Learnt From Exercise Celestial Navigation: The Application of a Geographic Information System to Inform Legionnaires' Disease Control Activity.

Geographic information systems (GIS) have emerged in the past few decades as a technology capable of assisting in the control of infectious disease outbreaks. A Legionnaires' disease cluster investigation in May 2016 in Sydney, New South Wales (NSW), Australia, demonstrated the importance of using GIS to identify at-risk water sources in real-time for field investigation to help control any immediate environmental health risk, as well as the need for more staff trained in the use of this technology. Sydney Local Health District Public Health Unit (PHU) subsequently ran an exercise (based on th…

Environmental changes, disease ecology and geographic information system-based tools for risk assessment.

In recent years, several vector-borne, parasitic or zoonotic diseases have emerged or re-emerged in different parts of the world, with major public health, socio-economic and political consequences. Emergence of these diseases is linked to climatic change, human-induced landscape changes and human activities that have affected disease ecology. The authors illustrate geographic information system-based approaches to understand epidemiological processes and predict disease patterns. Continent-wide approaches are used to explore vector and host distributions and identify areas where substantial c

Validation of a geographic information system model for mapping the risk of fasciolosis in cattle and buffaloes in Cambodia.

Maps showing gradations of risk of fasciolosis due to Fasciola gigantica in Cambodia were produced using geographic information systems (GIS) technology in conjunction with determinants of fasciolosis. A comparison between levels of risk predicted by the maps and field measurements of prevalence in 11 provinces (n=1406) showed general agreement, which suggested the epidemiological determinants and weightings used to produce the maps were appropriate. However, due to logistical constraints, prevalence was measured at the provincial level and animals were not randomly sampled (and thus were unli…

The potential of geographical information systems and remote sensing in the epidemiology and control of human helminth infections.

Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies are being used increasingly to study the spatial and temporal patterns of infectious diseases. For helminth infections, however, such applications have only recently begun despite the recognition that infection distribution patterns in endemic areas may have profound effects on parasite population dynamics and therefore the design and implementation of successful control programmes. Here, we review the early applications of these technologies to the major human helminths (geohelminths, schistosomes and the major lymphati…
