Simulating liquefaction-induced resuspension flux in a sediment transport model.

Wave-induced liquefaction is a geological hazard under the action of cyclic wave load on seabed. Liquefaction influences the suspended sediment concentration (SSC), which is essential for sediment dynamics and marine water quality. Till now, the identification of liquefaction state and the effect of liquefaction on SSC have not been sufficiently accounted for in the sediment model. In this study, we introduced a method for simulating the liquefaction-induced resuspension flux into an ocean model. We then simulated a storm north of the Yellow River Delta, China, and validated the results using

New Olimycins from a Cold-Seep-Derived Streptomyces olivaceus.

Cold-seeps are areas of the ocean floor in which hydrogen sulfide and methane are released into the open water. The cold-seep microbes are an emerging source of novel bioactive natural products. Four new ansa-ring opened linear ansamycin analogues, named olimycins E-H (1-4) were isolated from the cold-seep-derived Streptomyces olivaceus OUCLQ19-3. The planar and stereochemical structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated based on extensive MS and NMR spectroscopic analyses together with ECD calculations.

The economics of sediment quality on barrier shoreline restoration.

This paper depicts a simulation-based assessment of sediment quality on the performance of dedicated dredging projects for barrier island restoration in coastal Louisiana, USA. The research involved the development and integration of two sub-models. In the first, geomorphic modeling was used to simulate sediment transport dynamics within a proxy barrier island template over a 50-year trajectory. The template was assumed to be nourished with one of two sources of dredged material: nearshore (NS) sediments of lower quality (smaller grain diameter, higher organic fines); or higher quality sedimen

Effects of three iron material treatments on hydrogen sulfide release from anoxic sediments.

In eutrophic coastal regions, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a harmful material released from sediments under anoxic conditions. To suppress its release, we conducted laboratory experiments and assessed the impacts of treatment with three iron materials (Fe, Fe2O3, and FeOOH), focusing on the area-specific H2S release rate. These materials qualitatively exhibited a substantial suppression of H2S release; however, smaller treatment levels (<150 mmol m-2) were ineffective. FeOOH exhibited the best performance, followed by Fe2O3, and Fe. These differences were likely caused by variations in the oxidat

Coupled modelling of flow and non-capacity sediment transport in sewer flushing channel.

Flushing is cost-effective for mitigating sediments and constraining environmental problems in sewer systems. Previous mathematical models are almost exclusively built upon simplified governing equations evoking the assumptions of slow bed evolution and sediment transport capacity, of which the applicability remains open to question. Here a 1D coupled non-capacity model is presented for non-uniform sediment transport in sewer flushing channels, as adapted from recently established shallow water hydro-sediment-morphodynamic models for fluvial processes. The present model is tested for an experi

Effects of sediment flushing operations versus natural floods on Chinook salmon survival.

Flushing is a common measure to manage and reduce the amount of sediment stored in reservoirs. However, the sudden release of large volumes of sediment abruptly increases the suspended solids concentration and alters the riverbed composition. Similar effects can be produced also by natural flood events. Do flushing operations have more detrimental impacts than natural floods? To answer this question, we investigated the impact of flushing on the survival of the Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Sandy River (OR, USA), assuming that sediment is flushed from hypothetical bottom gat

Eutrophication leads to the formation of a sulfide-rich deep-water layer in Lake Sevan, Armenia.

Lake Sevan is a meso-eutrophic water body, which was severely impacted by anthropogenic level decrease, pollution and eutrophication during the last century. Starting in the 1970s, these processes resulted in the formation of an oxygen-depleted hypolimnion during summer-autumn stratification of the lake. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time that eutrophication of the lake leads not only to the full depletion of oxygen and nitrate in the hypolimnion but as well to the presence of sulfate-reducing microorganisms and toxic hydrogen sulfide. Concentrations of hydrogen sulfide in the hyp

Mineral and chemical changes of sediments after Cu sorption and then desorption induced by synthetic root exudate.

Understanding the fate of anthropogenically introduced copper in sediments is important to comprehend the biogeochemical processes; consequently, beneficial utilization of Cu-rich materials can be proposed (e.g. soil amendment). Therefore, we address the behavior of copper and other metals at the liquid-solid interface of different grain sizes in lake sediments. Initially, the sediment fractions were characterized for mineralogy (XRD), chemical structure (FTIR), physicochemical parameters (mainly pH, cation exchange capacity, and electric conductivity), organic content, and chemical compositio

Kinetics of Decomposition of Thiocyanate in Natural Aquatic Systems.

Rates of thiocyanate degradation were measured in waters and sediments of marine and limnic systems under various redox conditions, oxic, anoxic (nonsulfidic, nonferruginous, nonmanganous), ferruginous, sulfidic, and manganous, for up to 200-day period at micromolar concentrations of thiocyanate. The decomposition rates in natural aquatic systems were found to be controlled by microbial processes under both oxic and anoxic conditions. The Michaelis-Menten model was applied for description of the decomposition kinetics. The decomposition rate in the sediments was found to be higher than in the

Ecology: Electrical Cable Bacteria Save Marine Life.

Animals at the bottom of the sea survive oxygen depletion surprisingly often, and a new study identifies cable bacteria in the sediment as the saviors. The bacterial electrical activity creates an iron 'carpet', trapping toxic hydrogen sulfide.

Effects of Al-coagulant sludge characteristics on the efficiency of coagulants recovery by acidification.

This study evaluated the effects of Al-coagulant sludge characteristics on the efficiency ofcoagulant recovery by acidification with H2SO4. Two sludge characteristics were studied: types of coagulant and textures of the suspended solid in raw water. The coagulant types are aluminium sulphate and polyaluminium chloride (PACl); the textures of the suspended solid are sand-based and clay-based. Efficiency of aluminium recovery at a pH of 2 was compared for different sludges obtained from water treatment plants in Taiwan. The results showed that efficiency of aluminium recovery from sludge contain

Flushing history as a hydrogeological control on the regional distribution of arsenic in shallow groundwater of the Bengal Basin.

Whereas serious health consequences of widespread consumption of groundwater elevated in As have been documented in several South Asian countries, the mechanisms responsible for As mobilization in reducing aquifers remain poorly understood. We document here a previously unrecognized and consistent relationship between dissolved As concentrations in reducing groundwater and the phosphate-mobilizable As content of aquifer sediment for a set of precisely depth-matched samples from across Bangladesh. The relationship holds across nearly 3 orders of magnitude in As concentrations and suggests that

Historical pollution of seldom monitored trace elements in Sweden--Part B: sediment analysis of silver, antimony, thallium and indium.

Sediment cores from four boreal and remote lakes in a south to north transect in central Sweden were analysed for acid leachable silver, antimony, thallium and indium in the solid sediment phase and the corresponding porewater. Dating of the cores was made by their content of acid leachable lead and the (206)Pb/(207)Pb ratio, in one lake also by (210)Pb. The impact of diagenesis on element redistribution in the sediments was included and found to be minor except for thallium. The results show lowered concentrations towards the north and most intense accumulation after the Second World War, whi

Biogeochemical factors influencing net mercury methylation in contaminated freshwater sediments from the St. Lawrence River in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada.

The activity of various anaerobic microbes, including sulfate reducers (SRB), iron reducers (FeRP) and methanogens (MPA) has been linked to mercury methylation in aquatic systems, although the relative importance of each microbial group in the overall process is poorly understood in natural sediments. The present study focused on the biogeochemical factors (i.e. the relative importance of various groups of anaerobic microbes (FeRP, SRB, and MPA) that affect net monomethylmercury (MMHg) formation in contaminated sediments of the St. Lawrence River (SRL) near Cornwall (Zone 1), Ontario, Canada.

Heavy metal distribution and controlling factors within coastal plain sediments, Bells Creek catchment, southeast Queensland, Australia.

Bells Creek catchment in southeast Queensland (Australia) is a non-industrialised coastal plain limited to small settlements and agricultural land. A study was initiated to examine elevated metal concentrations and to assess horizontal and vertical distribution of those elements. Ninety-nine samples were analysed for Cr, V, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, As, Fe, Mn and Al. Total organic carbon, sulfur content and mineralogy of samples along with land-use practices across the catchment were used to identify processes which influence metal distribution. A comparison between metal concentration within the study

Ebullition-Enhanced Release of Microplastics from Aquatic Sediment to Overlying Water: An Overlooked Transport Pathway.

Microplastics (MPs) in aquatic systems are typically attributed to wastewater, runoff and atmospheric inputs, whereas the remobilization of sediment-associated MPs by benthic gas ebullition remains poorly understood. Here, we show that air-purged ebullition mobilized four common MPs, polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polylactic acid (PLA), from sediments into the overlying water, with release ratios of 8.9%-12.1% over 9 d. Suspended MP concentrations in the overlying water increased rapidly during the first 48 h, followed by slower release and e

The effect of sediment resuspension on organic matter reactivity and organic carbon content within a mid-latitude fjord in Scotland.

A laboratory-based experiment was conducted to evaluate how resuspension affects the amount and composition of the organic matter in the surface sediments of Loch Etive, a fjord in Western Scotland with a pronounced gradient of organic carbon content and organic matter reactivity. Sediment samples collected from the fjord's frequently hypoxic upper basin and its more well-mixed lower basin were completely resuspended in well-oxygenated seawater to simulate a potential maximum disturbance event. Resuspension of the sediments resulted in a loss of organic carbon and a decrease in the labile orga

Viral architects of the deep biosphere: reshaping the framework of sedimentary biogeochemistry.

A recent minireview by J. R. A. Williams and J. F. Biddle (Appl Environ Microbiol, 92:e00275-25, 2026, https://doi.org/10.1128/aem.00275-25) substantially reframes our understanding of sedimentary viruses. For decades, viruses in marine sediments have been viewed primarily as agents of mortality, their roles largely confined to the canonical "viral shunt" paradigm developed for pelagic systems. The authors expand this perspective, positioning viruses as active participants in benthic biogeochemistry-contributing to nutrient cycling, modulating microbial diversity, and influencing organic matte

Ecosystem functions beneath the tide: A trait-based study of tropical intertidal macrobenthos.

The intertidal zone represents a dynamic interface between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, where habitat heterogeneity plays a crucial role in shaping the structure of macrobenthic communities and ecosystem functioning. Traditional taxonomic metrics describe species composition but offer limited insight into how organisms contribute to key processes such as bioturbation, nutrient cycling, and sediment restructuring. Trait-based approaches overcome this limitation by directly linking organismal attributes to ecosystem functions, providing earlier and more mechanistic indicators of ecological
