Unilateral gingival enlargement in patient with neurofibromatosis type I.

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor. It is a neurocutaneous disorder with two defined entities: (1) Peripheral type I (NF1), described by von Recklinghausen; and (2) central type II, affecting mainly the central nervous system. NF1, the more common type, is an autosomal dominant, inherited disease, characterized by neural and cutaneous manifestations, as well as skeletal, oral and jaw expressions. All oral tissues have been reported to be affected with this tumoral disorder. Gingival neurofibroma in NF1 is uncommon. Diagnosis of NF1 is based upon a series of clinic

Gingival lesions in lipoid proteinosis.

Lipoid proteinosis is a rare heritable disease of the skin and mucous membranes characterized by subepithelial deposits of hyaline material. The morbid factors include disfiguring papulo-nodular lesions particularly of exposed skin, hoarseness of voice due to vocal cord infiltration, nodular deformation of the eyelids, and board-like rigidity of the tongue. Infiltration of the gingiva is usually unreported, and when mentioned has been equivocally related to the overall disease process. This patient demonstrates striking ulceration and hypertrophy with histologic evidence of heavy deposition of

Seven-year follow-up of a patient with hereditary gingival fibromatosis treated with a multidisciplinary approach: case report.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is rare in clinical practice, and the long-term results of the combined orthodontic-periodontal treatment of HGF are rarely reported. CASE PRESENTATION: This study reports for the first time the results of seven years of follow-up in a seven-year-old girl with HGF. The diagnosis was confirmed by clinical signs, family history and histopathological examination. First, periodontal scaling and oral hygiene reinforcement were performed regularly in the mixed dentition stage. Next, gingivoplasty was performed on the permanent dentition. Two months

Exploring the Prevalence of Oral Features for Early Detection of PTEN Hamartoma Tumour Syndrome.

AIMS: Patients with PTEN hamartoma tumour syndrome (PHTS) have an increased risk of developing cancer due to a pathogenic germline variant in the PTEN tumour suppressor gene. Early recognition of PHTS facilitates initiation of cancer surveillance which is highly effective in preventing the development of advanced malignancies. PHTS is rare and due to its varied phenotype, even within families, oral abnormalities may be a valuable tool in the identification of these patients at an early stage before cancer development. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1997 and 2020, phenotypic characteristics we

Multisystemic Manifestations of Hyaline Fibromatosis Syndrome: Implications for Diagnosis and Management.

Hyaline fibromatosis syndrome (HFS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the deposition of hyaline material in the skin, soft tissues, and bones. In this report, we discuss a case of a six-month-old male with HFS who presented with faltering growth, chronic diarrhea, multiple joint contractures, joint stiffness, hyperpigmented skin over bony prominences, gingival hypertrophy, patent foramen ovale, and symmetric periventricular hyperintensities on brain MRI. The diagnosis of HFS was confirmed by skin biopsy and genetic testing, which identified a homozygous mutation in the an

[Neonatal mucolipidosis type II].

Mucolipidosis type II (ML II, OMIM 252,500) is an autosomal recessive disorder clinically characterized by facial dysmorphia similar to Hurler syndrome and pronounced gingival hypertrophy. The disorder is caused by a defect in targeting acid hydrolases on the surface of lysosomes, which impede their entry and lead to accumulation of undigested substrates in lysosomes. The onset of the symptoms is usually in infancy, beginning in the 6th month of life. Early onset, at birth or even in utero, is a sign of severity and involves the specific dysmorphia as well as skeletal dysplasia related to hype

[Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis].

Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis is a rare autosomal recessive connective tissue disease first described in 1873 by Murray. Major diagnostic criteria are multiple cutaneous tumors and gingival hypertrophy; minor criteria include contractures, osteolytic lesions and a positive family history. After a normal perinatal period at the age of 6 months our 24 year old patient developed gingival hypertrophy. During the first months of life several skin coloured nodules had been noticed on the neck and in the perianal area. At the age of 15 months, these nodules began to appear more rapidly, both spontane

Two novel presentations of KCNMA1-related pathology--Expanding the clinical phenotype of a rare channelopathy.

BACKGROUND: KCNMA1 mutations have recently been associated with a wide range of dysmorphological, gastro-intestinal, cardiovascular, and neurological manifestations. METHODS: Whole exome sequencing was performed in order to identify the underlying pathogenic mutation in two cases presenting with diverse phenotypical manifestations that did not fit into well-known clinical entities. RESULTS: In an 8-year-old boy presenting with severe aortic dilatation, facial dysmorphism, and overgrowth at birth a de novo p.Gly375Arg KCNMA1 mutation was identified which has been reported previously in associ

Clinical and Cephalometric Correlation between Mouth-breathing and Nasal-breathing Children.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric sleep-disordered breathing encompasses conditions from upper airway resistance syndrome to obstructive sleep apnea. Mouth-breathing in children causes severe dentoalveolar deformities. Adenotonsillar hypertrophy exacerbates mouth-breathing, greatly influencing dentofacial development. Early detection of mouth-breathing habit is crucial to prevent the development of malocclusion. Mouth-breathing also alters the salivary pH of the saliva and has an impact on gingival health. AIM: The study aims to compare and correlate the clinical and cephalometric parameters between na

Drug-associated gingival disorders: a retrospective pharmacovigilance assessment using disproportionality analysis.

BACKGROUND: Drug-associated gingival disorders can negatively impact on oral health. This study aimed to utilize the United States Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (USFDA AERS) to comprehensively assess the associations between medications and specific gingival disorders. METHODS: Data were extracted from the USFDA AERS from 2004-2024 using Preferred Terms for eight gingival disorders. Reports were deduplicated and disproportionality analysis was conducted using frequentist and Bayesian approaches to detect potential signals. Volcano plots were generated for each gu

Periodontal manifestations of acute autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura. A case report.

Purpuric hemorrhages are usually the result of thrombocytopenia, but are also seen in vascular disorders such as vitamin C deficiency, Henoch-Schonlein purpura, and von Willebrand's disease. The progressive purpuric hemorrhages in the oral mucosae and skin in a case of acute autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (AITP) in a young adult are described. Localized hemorrhagic periodontal lesions of doubtful interpretation proved to be the first clinical signs of the underlying thrombocytopenia. The diagnosis is confirmed by finding thrombocytopenia with normal or increased numbers of megakaryocytes

Orofacial granulomatosis associated with gingival enlargement: a case report.

Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is an uncommon condition with varying clinical presentation. Gingival enlargement in children could be due to a varied etiology. The present case report is of an adolescent female with initial presentation of generalized gingival enlargement, lip swelling and perioral discoloration without any known etiopathological factors or systemic involvement. Conservative excision of the enlargement was performed and histopathological examination revealed a non caseating granulomatous lesion. Diagnosis of orofacial granulomatosis in context to sarcoidosis was arrived after
