Treatment of cutaneous gnathostomiasis with ivermectin.

In a randomized open study, we compared the efficacy of a single dose of oral ivermectin (200 microg/kg) and oral albendazole (400 mg/day for 21 days) for the treatment of cutaneous gnathostomiasis. Thirty-one patients were randomly assigned to receive ivermectin (n = 17) or albendazole (n = 14). Thirteen of 17 patients who received ivermectin responded, 3 relapsed, and 1 was unresponsive (cure rate = 76%). Thirteen of 14 patients who received albendazole responded very well and did not relapse. Only one patient was unresponsive (cure rate = 92%; P > 0.05). No major side effects were observed …

A case of occipital gnathostomiasis in Thailand.

A large subcutaneous nodule present for 2 mo was removed from the occiput of a 26-yr-old Thai man and found to contain a male Gnathostoma spinigerum. Aside from the occipital location, a noteworthy feature of the case was the long stationary persistence of the stable, non-tender nodule.

A case of penile gnathostomiasis in Thailand.

A living young adult female Gnathostoma spinigerum 1.9 cm in length was extracted from a perforating hole on the left laterodorsal aspect of the proximal part of the inflamed glans penis of a 3-year-old Thai boy, the first such case to be recorded in the literature.

Intralenticular gnathostomiasis: A rare parasitic invasion.

BACKGROUND: Intraocular gnathostomiasis is an exceptionally rare manifestation of Gnathostoma spinigerum infection. Ingested larvae from undercooked meat[1] can migrate to various body parts, causing significant morbidity. Intralenticular localization-where the larva is embedded within the crystalline lens-is extremely unique, with this video documenting the first reported global case. PURPOSE: To present the clinical, diagnostic, and surgical aspects of a unique case of intralenticular gnathostomiasis, providing educational value to ophthalmologists, parasitologists, and primary care physici…

MR imaging findings in cerebrospinal gnathostomiasis.

Human gnathostomiasis is an infection caused mainly by Gnathostoma spinigerum, a nematode. Infected humans can present with various clinical manifestations. Serology is the criterion standard for diagnosing gnathostomiasis, whereas MR imaging represents a complementary tool for assessing severity and extent of disease. We report two definite cases of gnathostomiasis that were confirmed by the immunoblotting technique. MR imaging of the cervical cords showed cord enlargement and diffuse high signal intensity, mainly of the gray-white matter regions. MR imaging of the brain showed hemorrhagic tr…

[Eosinophilic migratory nodular panniculitis (human gnathostomiasis)].

The case of a patient with thoracic abdominal and left arm, migratory erythema-edematous plates over a space of three years is described. The histopathologic features reveal a eosinophilic panniculitis due to probable larva migrans (gnathostomiasis). This appears to be the first report on the subject because we have not found any reference to the subject in Argentina bibliographic search.

[Migratory vulvitis caused by imported gnathostomiasis].

Gnathostomiasis is an emerging disease in non-endemic countries. This zoonotic nematode requires aquatic freshwater environments to complete its life cycle where larvae get encrusted in fishes. Typically, the infection manifests as migratory subcutaneous lesion caused by the larvae trak, which produces an eosinophilic panniculitis. Here we describe a patient who presented a migratory lesion with no response to antimicrobial therapy, a careful travel and food history together with specific laboratory tests led to the correct diagnosis. Gnathostomiasis should be suspected in patients with migrat…

Ocular Gnathostomiasis-Update of Earlier Survey.

Ocular gnathostomiasis is rather a rare food-borne zoonosis caused by infection with the larvae of several species of genus Gnathostoma and is a representative ocular larva migrans syndrome. In our previous literature survey, we found 73 cases of ocular gnathostomiasis reported up to and including 2009, though additional sporadic cases have been reported in Asia and the Americas since that report. Here, we review 10 additional cases reported since 2010, and also update current findings regarding epidemiological and clinical features in affected patients.

Case report: intraocular gnathostomiasis in Vietnam.

This is the report of the first case of intraocular gnathostomiasis diagnosed in Vietnam. The disease progressed in two months in two distinct phases: in the first phase, the patient had swellings, which appeared at different times and in different locations, on his face--this phase lasted around one month; the second phase was the embedding of the parasite in the vitreous cavity of the right eye and uveitis. Surgical extraction of a living Gnathostoma larva was carried out. Based on morphological, histological criteria, the larva may have been an atypical third-stage of Gnathostoma spinigerum…

Gnathostomiasis possibly caused by Gnathostoma malaysiae.

Gnathostomiasis is rarely reported in travelers, although the disease remains a major public health problem in Southeast Asia. A creeping eruption and Quincke's edema (slowly migrating erythema with pruritus) appeared in two Japanese men who had eaten raw freshwater shrimp in Myanmar. A Gnathostoma larva was found in subcutaneous tissue from one of the men. Four species causing human gnathostomiasis, G. hispidum, G. doloresi, G. nipponicum and G. spinigerum, can be distinguished based on the number of nuclei in intestinal epithelial cells of infected larvae, in cross-section. In G. hispidum, o…
