OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to review our experience with patients having hepatic rupture or hematoma caused by HELLP syndrome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Descriptive simple cross sectional retrospective study. A review was performed of medical records of all patients admitted at our Hospital's intensive care unit having HELLP syndrome during pregnancy or puerperium between February 1999 and February 2010. Patients complicated with hematoma or hepatic rupture were included.
RESULTS: Three cases were identified. The average maternal age was 35 years old and the average gestational ag…

BACKGROUND: HELLP syndrome is associated with more serious cases of preeclampsia-eclampsia with a high frequency of maternal complications.
OBJECTIVE: To report the prevalence and type of maternal complications in patients with HELLP syndrome and to compare these with the recent literature.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in patients with HELLP syndrome treated between July 1, 2009 and July 31, 2010 in the intensive care unit. Maternal complications were registered in the clinical files. Statistical descriptive measures (averages, median, and standard deviations…

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2005eng
Hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome is a rare complication of pregnancy that is associated with preeclampsia and may result in rupture of the liver. Although there have been case reports of liver transplantation for HELLP syndrome, the outcomes of transplantation for this rare indication have not been reported. Furthermore, the optimal management of complicated HELLP syndrome and indications for liver transplantation are unclear. Our objective was to review the national experience with liver transplantation for HELLP syndrome and to develop a comprehensiv…

In a 5 years period 5 female patients suffering from a severe HELLP syndrome were treated. The problems concerning diagnostic and treatment are discussed. 3 patients had to be operated on in an emergency state. The operations were performed because of acute and severe abdominal bleeding. Two of the patients needed liver transplantation as an emergency procedure, one of them died after hepatectomy on the list. Another one died 7 weeks after successful transplantation in a state of prolonged sepsis. The two conservatively treated and the one transplanted patient are still alive and well.

The Hellp syndrome is a complication of raised blood pressure in pregnancy, haemolysis, a rise in liver enzymes and thrombopenia. In this retrospective study we report 12 cases of Hellp syndrome which occurred in the University Hospital Centre of Poitiers between 1982 and 1990 and we discuss causes, the progress, the prognosis and the management. Six patients were helped by prophylactic Caesarean operation. Two patients had eclamptic fits. Fortunately there was no maternal death. There were seven cases of intrauterine growth retardation, two of in utero fetal death and one of early neonatal de…

HELLP-syndrome (H - haemolysis, EL - elevated liver enzymes, LP - low platelet count) is a serious complication of pregnancy. It can be considered as a variant of severe preeclampsia, where haemolysis, hepatic damage (elevated liver enzymes) and thrombocytopenia (low platelets) are all present. Four case reports of HELLP-syndrome are described. HELLP-syndrome may develop within a few hours. It can be seen pre-, intra- and postpartum. Many patients do not exhibit a clinical picture of severe preeclampsia. Patients who develop HELLP-syndrome usually complain of malaise, nausea, epigastric pain a

HELLP syndrome continues to be a clinical entity of difficult diagnosis. Weinstein first defined it in 1982 giving the practicing obstetrician a sequence of useful initials (H = hemolysis; EL = elevated liver enzymes; LP = low platelets). Since then a lot has been written and it has become clear that the syndrome is a form of severe preeclampsia. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology does not include HELLP in the description of severe pre-eclampsia as such but does accept each of its components as being part of severe pre-eclampsia. The case presented deals with a 33 year old white…

On the basis of current literary data the author presents clinical, laboratory and histomorphological parameters, which show that HELLP syndrome and acute fatty dystrophy of liver during pregnancy have equal clinical picture, equal laboratory results, equal clinical management, equal therapeutic treatment, equal early and late prognosis for the mother and fetus (infant). The indicated up to now "specific" histological finding in the liver during fatty dystrophy of the liver of pregnant women is not sufficient foundation for division of these syndromes, because it is found in the HELLP syndrome…

The so-called HELLP-syndrome, a special form of severe preeclampsia, is characterized by (H-) hemolysis, (EL-) elevated liver enzymes and (LP-) low platelet count. The data of three HELLP-cases are shown, the development and outcome of the pathologic laboratory parameters are presented. After a several months control it was evident that after delivery the initial improvement of all laboratory findings proceeds and lasts. A special medical treatment is not necessary.

A case of the HELLP syndrome in a pregnant woman, which was diagnosed initially as obstructive cholecystitis, is presented. The diagnostic difficulties and some management problems are discussed. Practitioners should be aware of the HELLP syndrome and related conditions when caring for pregnant patients.

A black patient with the HELLP syndrome is presented. This syndrome is apparently rare in black patients in South African hospitals. In patients with gestational proteinuric hypertension, the importance of recognising epigastric pain is emphasised. The management of maternal thrombocytopenia and the possible consequences for the fetus are described.

We assessed pregnancy outcomes for patients with HELLP syndrome (hemolysis; elevated liver enzymes; low platelet count) with and without concurrent eclampsia. We performed a retrospective investigation of data spanning three decades of patients with class 1 or 2 HELLP syndrome with concurrent eclampsia (HELLP + E) and patients with HELLP syndrome without eclampsia. Data were analyzed by appropriate tests for continuous or categorical outcomes with differences considered significant if P < 0.05. During 1981 to 1996 and 2000 to 2006, there were 693 patients with class 1 or 2 HELLP syndrome; alto…
