Pubertal development and anxiety risk independently relate to startle habituation during fear conditioning in 8-14 year-old females.

Reduced habituation to aversive stimuli has been observed during adolescence and may reflect an underlying mechanism of vulnerability for anxiety disorders. This study examined the startle reflex during a fear-learning task in 54 8-14-year-old girls. We examined the relationship between mean startle, startle habituation, pubertal development, and two measures linked to risk for anxiety: behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and the error-related negativity (ERN). Puberty, BIS, and the ERN were unrelated to mean startle; however, each measure modulated startle habituation. Greater pubertal develop

A fronto-striato-subthalamic-pallidal network for goal-directed and habitual inhibition.

Classically, the basal ganglia have been considered to have a role in producing habitual and goal-directed behaviours. In this article, we review recent evidence that expands this role, indicating that the basal ganglia are also involved in neural and behavioural inhibition in the motor and non-motor domains. We then distinguish between goal-directed and habitual (also known as automatic) inhibition mediated by fronto-striato-subthalamic-pallido-thalamo-cortical networks. We also suggest that imbalance between goal-directed and habitual action and inhibition contributes to some manifestations

Risk dishabituation: in repeated gambling, risk is reduced following low-probability "surprising" events (wins or losses).

In path-dependent risk taking, like playing a slot machine, the wager on one trial may be affected by the outcome of the preceding trial. Previous studies have shown that a person's risk-taking preferences may change as a result of the preceding trial (win or loss). For example, the "house money effect" suggests that risk taking may increase after a win, whereas the "break even effect" posits that risk taking increases after a loss. Independent of those findings, a person's emotional state has been found to influence risk taking. For example, the "mood maintenance hypothesis" supports the noti

A long-term porcine model for measurement of gastrointestinal motility.

Animal models have become an essential tool in the investigations of gut motility under experimental conditions. To determine the influence of various anaesthetic drugs on the motility pattern of the gastroduodenal tract, a new long-term model has had to be developed for allowing measurements in conscious and unrestrained as well as in sedated and analgosedated pigs. Since mechanical ventilation influences gut motility, it was necessary that this animal model enabled the investigation of the effect of drugs causing sedation and analgosedation during spontaneous breathing. Seven male, castrated

Motion sickness and otolith sensitivity: a pilot study of habituation to linear acceleration.

Astronauts, particularly in Skylab flights, experienced varying degrees of motion sickness lasting 3-5 d. One possible mechanism for this motion sickness adaptation is believed to be a reduction in otolith sensitivity with an attendant reduction in sensory conflict. In an attempt to determine if this hypothesis is valid, a ground-based pilot study was conducted on a vertical linear accelerator. The extent of habituation to accelerations which initially produced motion sickness was evaluated, along with the possible value of habituation training to minimize the space motion sickness problem. Latent inhibition of rotation chair-induced nausea in healthy male and female volunteers.

OBJECTIVES: Pre-exposure to an environment in which a nausea-inducing body rotation will subsequently be given constitutes a latent inhibition procedure that might act to reduce anticipatory and postrotation nausea. METHODS: This was tested in 24 healthy subjects randomly assigned to receive no pre-exposure (group 0), a single pre-exposure (group 1), or three pre-exposures (group 3). Rotation was standardized as 5 x 1 minute rotation, but the subjects could terminate it on request. Nausea was determined on a 7-item symptom rating scale before, during, and after rotation on days 3 and 4, where

Laser-evoked potentials in primary headaches and cranial neuralgias.

Using neurophysiological methods to explore nociceptive pathways may improve knowledge of the functional changes subtending pain processing in the different forms of headache and facial pain. Laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) are a reliable neurophysiological assay for the clinical assessment of pain syndromes. Reduced amplitude of LEPs seems to characterize trigeminal neuralgia and painful temporomandibular disorders, suggesting the neuropathic origin of pain. In tension-type headache, as well as in fibromyalgia, enhanced pericranial LEP amplitude suggests the psychogenic origin of pain. In migr

Sensitization of Visually Induced Motion Sickness by Prior Provocative Physical Motion.

INTRODUCTION: Habituation to motion has therapeutic applications for motion sickness desensitization and rehabilitation of patients with vestibular disease. Less attention has been devoted to the opposite process: sensitization. METHODS: Subjects (N = 50) were randomly allocated to four sequences: Baseline visual stimulus; then 15 min of time gap; cross-coupled motion (C-C) or a Control condition; then a time gap of 15 min or 2 h; then a retest visual stimulus. Motion exposures were for 10 min or until moderate nausea, whichever was sooner. The visual stimulus was a scene rotating in yaw at 0

Habituation of distress during exposure and its relationship to treatment outcome in post-traumatic stress disorder and prolonged grief disorder.

Background: Reliving distressing memories is a core component of treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and prolonged grief disorder (PGD). There is little understanding of how reliving these memories functions in the treatment of these disorders. Objective: This study investigated whether reliving functions comparably in the treatment of PTSD and PGD, and whether it is comparably related to treatment outcome.Method: This study conducted a reanalysis of patients with either PTSD (n = 55) or PGD (n = 45) who underwent treatments that comprised at least four sessions of reliving mem

Mechanisms of exposure and response prevention in obsessive-compulsive disorder: effects of habituation and expectancy violation on short-term outcome in cognitive behavioral therapy.

BACKGROUND: Exposure and response prevention is effective and recommended as the first choice for treating obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). Its mechanisms of action are rarely studied, but two major theories make distinct assumptions: while the emotional processing theory assumes that treatment effects are associated with habituation within and between exposure sessions, the inhibitory learning approach highlights the acquisition of additional associations, implying alternative mechanisms like expectancy violation. The present study aimed to investigate whether process variables derived f

A model-based quantification of startle reflex habituation in larval zebrafish.

Zebrafish is an established animal model for the reproduction and study of neurobiological pathogenesis of human neurological conditions. The 'startle reflex' in zebrafish larvae is an evolutionarily preserved defence response, manifesting as a quick body-bend in reaction to sudden sensory stimuli. Changes in startle reflex habituation characterise several neuropsychiatric disorders and hence represent an informative index of neurophysiological health. This study aimed at establishing a simple and reliable experimental protocol for the quantification of startle reflex response and habituation.

Light-stimulus intensity modulates startle reflex habituation in larval zebrafish.

The startle reflex in larval zebrafish describes a C-bend of the body occurring in response to sudden, unexpected, stimuli of different sensory modalities. Alterations in the startle reflex habituation (SRH) have been reported in various human and animal models of neurological and psychiatric conditions and are hence considered an important behavioural marker of neurophysiological function. The amplitude, offset and decay constant of the auditory SRH in larval zebrafish have recently been characterised, revealing that the measures are affected by variation in vibratory frequency, intensity, an

Tremor habituation to deep brain stimulation: Underlying mechanisms and solutions.

DBS of the ventral intermediate nucleus is an extremely effective treatment for essential tremor, although a waning benefit is observed after a variable time in a variable proportion of patients (ranging from 0% to 73%), a concept historically defined as "tolerance." Tolerance is currently an established concept in the medical community, although there is debate on its real existence. In fact, very few publications have actually addressed the problem, thus making tolerance a typical example of science based on "eminence rather than evidence." The underpinnings of the phenomena associated with

A model of the development and maintenance of generalized social phobia.

Many factors have been associated with the development and maintenance of generalized social phobia (GSP); however, the ways in which these factors interact with one another to produce and maintain GSP remains unclear. The current paper proposes that Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) can be used to integrate a wide range of factors into a unified and theoretically-driven model of GSP. The paper begins by briefly summarizing research on genetic, temperamental, environmental, and cognitive factors associated with GSP. The next section of the paper provides an overview of RST. A model of the

An experimental demonstration that fear, but not disgust, is associated with return of fear in phobias.

It has been suggested that disgust, rather than anxiety, may be important in some phobias. Correlational studies have been ambiguous, indicating either that disgust increases phobic anxiety or that phobic anxiety potentiates disgust. In the experimental study reported here, disgust and phobic anxiety were manipulated in the context of habituation to phobic stimuli. Spider fearful participants were randomly allocated to conditions in which neutral, disgusting, and phobic anxiety provoking stimuli were introduced into a video-based spider phobic habituation sequence. Exposure to the phobic stimu

Thalamic neuron theory: theoretical basis for the role played by the central nervous system (CNS) in the causes and cures of all diseases.

The Thalamic Neuron Theory (TNT) postulates that the central nervous system (CNS) is involved in all disease processes, as the CNS not only processes incoming physical and chemical information from the periphery, it also sends out physiological commands to the periphery in order to maintain homeostasis for the entire body. Inherent in its capacity to learn and adapt (i.e. to habituate) is the CNS' ability to learn to be sick (pathological habituation) by looking in certain deranged central neural circuitries, leading to chronic disease states. These pathologically habituated states can be reve
