Interleukin-10 in cutaneous disorders: implications for its pathophysiological importance and therapeutic use.

With its antiinflammatory and immunosuppressive properties interleukin-10 (IL-10) plays a dominant role in several immune reactions including regulatory mechanisms in the skin. The overexpression of this mediator has been reported in some inflammatory dermatoses as well as in various skin tumors. These observations are of importance since they may explain the limitation of hyperinflammatory conditions as in eczemas and erythemas on the one hand and the suppression of an adequate antitumor response and thereby the progression of malignant tumors on the other hand. Moreover, elevated IL-10 expre

Acral acanthotic anomaly: a comprehensive review.

Acral acanthotic anomaly (AAA), also referred to as acral acanthosis nigricans (AAN), is a variant of acanthosis nigricans characterized by hyperpigmented, hyperkeratotic plaques localized to acral surfaces, particularly the knuckles, toes, and dorsal aspects of the hands and feet. Unlike other common forms, AAA is not typically associated with obesity, insulin resistance, or endocrinopathy. Its pathogenesis remains poorly understood. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the literature on AAA, including its epidemiology, clinical features, histopathologic findings

Disseminated cutaneous sporotrichosis: an unusual case.

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by Sporothrix schenckii with endemic regions in the American continent. Clinical features depend on the immunological patient state and some characteristics of the fungus. Disseminated cutaneous sporotrichosis is a rare variant usually described in immunocompromised patients. A 42-year-old man was admitted with multiple verrucous and erythematous papules and plaques of the face and limbs. Many lesions showed an ulcerated and crusted component, some papules displayed linear arrangement, and some verrucous plaques exhibited black spots. Skin biopsy

Finger and toenail onycholysis.

Onycholysis - the separation of the nail plate from the nail bed occurs in fingers and toenails. It is diagnosed by the whitish appearance of the separated nail plate from the nail bed. In fingers, the majority is caused by trauma, manicuring, occupational or self-induced behavior. The most common disease producing fingernail onycholysis is psoriasis and pustular psoriasis. Phototoxic dermatitis, due to drugs can also produce finger onycholysis. Once the separation occurs, the environmental flora sets up temporary colonization in the available space. Finger onycholysis is most common in women.

Treating cosmetically induced nail problems.

Smooth, lustrous nails are a sign of health and beauty in our society and fuel the US$6-billion nail salon industry in the United States. Although many women can use nail cosmetics without adverse consequences, when problems occur it is important to recognize the causes and treat the problem condition. The cornerstone of management of nail cosmetic problems is prevention through education. In spite of efforts to that end, nail salon procedures and materials can cause nail disease that must be recognized and treated in order to restore the nails to health.

PPE-associated dermatoses: effect on work and wellbeing.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to more stringent infection control practice within hospitals, with the added requirement of personal protective equipment (PPE). Consequentially, the incidence of PPE-related dermatoses in healthcare workers is increasing. Analysis of staff members seen in a dermatology self-referral service during the first COVID-19 peak revealed a wide range of healthcare professionals being affected, with irritant hand dermatitis and acneiform eruptions being the commonest diagnoses. These PPE-related dermatoses had significant effects on staff members' work and wellbeing, whi

Systemic ciclosporin and tacrolimus in dermatology.

Ciclosporin and tacrolimus are calcineurin inhibiting immunosuppressant agents useful in the treatment of immune-mediated inflammatory dermatoses. Available data and clinical experience demonstrate ciclosporin's efficacy in treating psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, pyoderma gangrenosum, lichen planus, autoimmune bullous disease (in combination with corticosteroids), recalcitrant chronic idiopathic urticaria, and chronic dermatitis of the hands and feet. Although the role of topical tacrolimus in atopic dermatitis is well established, such experience with the oral formulation of tacrolimus has bee

[Occupational dermatoses in the pharmaceutical industry].

The analysis of the total of 76 occupational dermatoses registered after 1962 in the pharmaceutical industry of the district of Dresden results in the following statements: The morbidity must be regarded as three times higher than in other branches of the chemical industry. Compared with the average dates of all occupational dermatoses, those in the pharmaceutical industry need a shorter induction time for starting. On the other hand, they are to be cured faster and with less recurrences. The lists of causal agents are heterogeneous and differ largely from those of drug induced eczemas of our

Primary and secondary sites of occupational contact dermatitis.

Patterns of distribution of allergic contact dermatitis follow a certain order in time. The disease starts at a given site, most often as a unilateral acrodermatitis and, should it become chronic, spreads locally. The subsequent pattern of distribution varies depending on the primary site and the type--occupational or otherwise--of the disease. In this study data collected two decades ago are confronted with the more recent ones relating to 1055 cases of occupational allergic contact dermatitis. Examination of this material brought to light no essential difference between the older and more re

"Slime" dermatitis, a fad-associated chronic hand dermatitis.

"Slime" is the colloquial name for a non-Newtonian viscoelastic putty-like substance that is currently a popular plaything among pre-teens and adolescents. Several ingredients in homemade slime recipes may cause irritant or allergic contact dermatitis. We report two children who developed slime-associated chronic hand dermatitis, more prominently on their dominant hand. We review the potential for irritant and allergic contact dermatoses as the causes of dermatitis associated with homemade slime.
