Impact Mitigation Properties and Material Characterization of Women's Lacrosse Headgear.

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact attenuation properties of women's lacrosse headgear and to characterize mechanical properties of the materials of which they are composed. Impacts using a linear impactor (2.2, 2.9, and 5.0 m/s) and a projectile shooter (13.4 and 27.0 m/s) were applied to a Hybrid III 50th male head-neck assembly at six impact locations to replicate realistic women's lacrosse head impacts. Individual materials that make up the headgear were tested in compression at two quasi-static strain rates, 0.01/s and1/s, and 100/s using uniaxial test machines. For the l

Detecting functional deficits following sub-concussive head impacts: the relationship between head impact kinematics and visual-vestibular balance performance.

Introduction: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) continues to be a significant issue facing the US military. While TBI cases in deployed environments are of significant concern, an estimated 80% of diagnoses occur in garrison settings (e.g., military training). Objective: With the aim of improving the detection of potentially concussive exposures, the objective of this study was to evaluate the relationships between head impact kinematics and performance on a visual-vestibular balance task. Methods: Participants (n = 51) were enrolled in the Basic Airborne Training Course. The influence of impact force redistribution and redirection on maximum principal strain for helmeted head impacts.

Sporting helmets with linear attenuating strategies are proficient at reducing the risk of traumatic brain injury. However, the continued high incidence of concussion in American football, has led researchers to investigate novel helmet liner strategies. These strategies typically supplement existing technologies by adding or integrating head-helmet decoupling mechanisms. Decoupling strategies aim to redirect or redistribute impact force around the head, reducing impact energy transferred to the brain. This results in decreased brain tissue strain, which is beneficial in injury risk reduction

Analysis and comparison of lateral head impacts using various golf discs and a Hybrid III head form.

The potential for head injuries from discs specifically designed for the sport of disc golf has increased as more disc golf courses are constructed in municipal parks where there is an inherent risk to park users of being struck by a golf disc. This study investigated the potential for head injury of various golf discs used in the sport of disc golf at 18 m/s (40 mph) and 27 m/s (60 mph) using a Hybrid III head form. A matrix of eight modern golf discs were tested to determine if velocity, mass, disc type, or flexibility has a significant effect on the potential for head injury as indicated by

Helmet versus non-helmet treatment in infants with positional cranial deformation: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Active repositioning and cranial orthoses are the primary treatment choices for positional cranial deformation (CD). However, the superiority of helmet therapy over non-helmet therapies remains controversial. We conducted a meta-analysis of cranial asymmetry (CA) parameters from studies comparing helmet therapy to non-helmet therapy in infants with non-synostotic CD. METHODS: We systematically reviewed the literature from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases. Exclusion criteria included lack of a control group, overlapping populations, and solely qualitative outcomes. Statistica

Orthotic treatment of positional brachycephaly associated with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is an inherited disorder of the connective tissue characterized primarily by fractures with no or small causal antecedents and extremely variable clinical presentation. The disorder requires a global and, therefore, multidisciplinary therapeutic approach that should aim, among other aspects, at the prevention and treatment of deformities resulting from osteogenesis imperfecta. Due to limitations related to bony deformities, it can be difficult to place these infants in a variety of positions that would help remediate skull deformities, so a cranial orthosis becomes the

Endoscopic-assisted osteotomies for the treatment of craniosynostosis.

INTRODUCTION: The development of multidisciplinar units for Craniofacial Surgery has led to better postoperative results and a considerable decrease in morbidity in the treatment of complex craniofacial patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Standard correction of craniosynostosis involves calvarial remodeling, often considerable blood losses that need to be replaced and lengthy hospital stay. The use of minimally invasive techniques for the correction of some of these malformations are widespread and allows the surgeon to minimize the incidence of complications by means of a decreased surgical tim

A Review of On-Field Investigations into the Biomechanics of Concussion in Football and Translation to Head Injury Mitigation Strategies.

This review paper summarizes the scientific advancements in the field of concussion biomechanics in American football throughout the past five decades. The focus is on-field biomechanical data collection, and the translation of that data to injury metrics and helmet evaluation. On-field data has been collected with video analysis for laboratory reconstructions or wearable head impact sensors. Concussion biomechanics have been studied across all levels of play, from youth to professional, which has allowed for comparison of head impact exposure and injury tolerance between different age groups.

A modular impact diverting mechanism for football helmets.

To mitigate the injurious effect of the rotational acceleration of the brain, a modular Impact Diverting Mechanism (IDM) has been developed. The IDM can replace stickers (decals) that normally attach to the exterior of a football helmet. The IDM decals reduce friction and catch points between the covered area with the IDM on the outer shell of the helmet and the impacting surface, thereby decreasing rotational acceleration acting on the player's head. A Riddell Speed helmet's exterior was prepared with the IDM and outfitted to a headform equipped with linear accelerometers and gyroscopes. The

Modeling and Optimization of Airbag Helmets for Preventing Head Injuries in Bicycling.

Bicycling is the leading cause of sports-related traumatic brain injury. Most of the current bike helmets are made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam and ultimately designed to prevent blunt trauma, e.g., skull fracture. However, these helmets have limited effectiveness in preventing brain injuries. With the availability of high-rate micro-electrical-mechanical systems sensors and high energy density batteries, a new class of helmets, i.e., expandable helmets, can sense an impending collision and expand to protect the head. By allowing softer liner medium and larger helmet sizes, this novel ap

Quantifying head impact biomechanical differences between commonly employed cleaning levels: a critical research interpretation consideration.

INTRODUCTION: Wearable accelerometry devices quantify on-field frequency and severity of head impacts to further improve sport safety. Commonly employed post-data collection cleaning techniques may affect these outcomes. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to compare game impact rates and magnitudes between three different cleaning levels (Level-1: impacts recorded within start and end times, Level-2: impacts during pauses/breaks removed, Level-3: video verified) for male youth tackle football. METHODS: Participants (n = 23, age = 10.9 ± 0.3 yrs, height = 150.0 ± 8.3 cm, mass = 41.6 ± 8.4 kg) wore Tr

[The individual irradiation mask--a means for improving focussing accuracy].

Individual masks have been applied for about one year at the Radiotherapeutic Hospital of Erlangen in order to treat tumors situated in the head and neck region, the superior aperture of the thorax and the brain as well as tumors situated in the posterior cranial fossa showing a tendency to form metastases within the spine (medulloblastoma and ependymoblastoma). The advantages of this method are the reproducible position of the patient, the facilitation of exact focussing and the absence of marks on the patient's skin. The disadvantages are the increase of radiodermatitis and increased expendi

A Two-Phased Approach to Quantifying Head Impact Sensor Accuracy: In-Laboratory and On-Field Assessments.

Measuring head impacts in sports can further our understanding of brain injury biomechanics and, hopefully, advance concussion diagnostics and prevention. Although there are many head impact sensors available, skepticism on their utility exists over concerns related to measurement error. Previous studies report mixed reliability in head impact sensor measurements, but there is no uniform approach to assessing accuracy, making comparisons between sensors and studies difficult. The objective of this paper is to introduce a two-phased approach to evaluating head impact sensor accuracy. The first

Motorcycling morbidity and mortality--an unstudied epidemic.

South Africa has the highest motorcycle accident and associated casualty rate in the world. In dealing with the problem South Africa lags far behind other countries where rider training programmes have had astonishing success. Accident statistics, problems relating to motorcycling and protective clothing are discussed. Recommendations are made which if implemented should reduce the accident and casualty rate by at least 50%; this indicates the size of the problem in this neglected field of automotive preventive medicine.
