Hardship-Free Households Are Associated With Optimal Caregiver and Child Health.

INTRODUCTION: Families living with low incomes experience a higher risk of material hardships associated with poor health. To understand the potentially protective role of hardship-free households, the authors examined associations between the absence of material hardships among families with low incomes and child health and healthcare utilization and caregiver health outcomes. METHODS: Researchers interviewed a sentinel sample of caregivers of publicly insured children aged <4 years in hospital settings in 5 U.S. cities (2012-2017). Exposure to material hardships (food insecurity, housing in

A new source of data to inform policy on chronic diseases.

Chronic diseases are the nation's leading cause of disability and death. To guide policy discussions about chronic diseases, data are essential but have been lacking on the commercially insured. FAIR Health is introducing Atlas, a free data source that addresses this need. Based on the nation's largest collection of recent commercial claims, FAIR Health Atlas visualizes chronic disease data across all fifty states and Washington, DC, revealing areas facing health challenges. Results using FAIR Health Atlas concern the commercially insured. For example, Atlas data show that West Virginia was th

Compendium of measures to prevent disease associated with animals in public settings, 2007: National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians, Inc. (NASPHV).

Certain venues encourage or permit the public to contact animals, resulting in millions of human-animal interactions each year. These settings include county or state fairs, petting zoos, animal swap meets, pet stores, zoologic institutions, circuses, carnivals, farm tours, livestock-birthing exhibits, educational exhibits at schools, and wildlife photo opportunities. Although multiple benefits of human-animal contact exist, infectious diseases, rabies exposures, injuries, and other human health problems associated with these settings are possible. Infectious disease outbreaks reported during

Navigating fairness in artificial intelligence-based prediction models: theoretical constructs and practical applications.

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based prediction models, including risk scoring systems and decision support systems, are being increasingly adopted in health care. Addressing AI fairness is essential to fighting health disparities and ensuring equitable model performance and patient outcomes. However, numerous and conflicting definitions of fairness complicate this effort. In this Viewpoint, we aim to support the transition of AI fairness from theory to practice using appropriate fairness metrics. We assess the relation of 27 fairness definitions identified in the literature to the model's inten

Cases of Interspecies Transmission of Influenza A Virus from Swine to Humans.

Influenza A viruses infect many animal species and have great zoonotic potential. The epidemiology of swine influenza worldwide is of particular importance because the pig can act as a "mixing vessel" where avian and human influenza viruses can undergo genetic reassortment, creating new viruses. Zoonotic transmission allows new strains of influenza A viruses to be introduced into the human population, potentially causing the next influenza pandemic. The dynamic nature of swine influenza viruses poses challenges to both the swine industry and public health as a source of zoonotic infection. Hum

Advances, challenges, and future directions in trauma-related Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable (FAIR) data efforts.

Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data advances are becoming more common and more important across research fields given the large amount of research data in need of synthesis and application. Many novel methods improve the efficiency and accuracy of data reuse, combination, and synthesis, which is necessary given that there are over 500 published randomized controlled trials of posttraumatic stress disorder treatments in adults; however, these methods are still relatively new to the field of traumatic stress research. We provide a brief overview of relevant FAIR data ef

Health, Socioeconomic Status, and Opioid Use Disorder: Risk Factors Among Individuals With Nonmedical Opioid Use.

OBJECTIVES: Concern is growing about rising opioid use disorder (OUD) rates and limited knowledge of how socioeconomic status (SES) and health factors interact. We examined whether health status moderates the relationship between SES and OUD among individuals with nonmedical opioid use. METHODS: We analyzed data from 10 984 adults aged ≥18 years in the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Logistic regression estimated odds of OUD using self-reported health (good/very good/excellent vs fair/poor) and SES indicators (education, income, employment, and marital status). Interaction t

Promoting oral health as part of an interprofessional community-based women's health event.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women, and studies have shown connections between cardiovascular and oral health. However, interprofessional community-based participatory initiatives promoting women's oral health have received little research attention. This study evaluated the effectiveness of personalized oral health education (POHE) during a free one-day interprofessional women's health promotion event. The objectives were to 1) assess the participants' knowledge about the connection between oral health and heart disease; 2) disseminate information about oral-systemic linkages; 3)

Predictors of perceived health status of tuberculosis-infected homeless.

This study examines the predictors of perceived health status among homeless adults with latent tuberculosis (TB) in Los Angeles, especially in relation to gender differences. Total, 415 men and women enrolled in a TB-adherence trial completed baseline assessments concerning health status. Results indicated that women were more likely than men to report being in fair or poor health and to have experienced health problems. More women than men self-reported daily drug use and poor mental health. Homeless women were also more likely than their male counterparts to receive support from non-drug-us

Self-rated health and its association with perceived environmental hazards, the social environment, and cultural stressors in an environmental justice population.

BACKGROUND: Communities with large minority populations often are located near sources of pollution and have higher crime rates, which may work in combination with other factors to influence health. Poor self-rated health is related to chronic health conditions and premature mortality, with minority populations most likely to report poor health. To address how both resident perception of neighborhood environments and chronic health conditions individually and collectively influence health, we examined self-rated health and its association with multiple types of perceived environmental hazards

A Health Belief Model Examination of Factors Related to Hepatitis B Screening Among African Immigrants in Philadelphia.

Chronic hepatitis B infection is a leading cause of liver cancer worldwide. In the USA, African immigrants (AI) have high hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection rates but low HBV knowledge and screening rates. Research about HBV among AI living in Philadelphia is particularly limited. This study aims to assess barriers to and factors influencing HBV screening in the Philadelphia AI population. African and Caribbean-born adults in Greater Philadelphia were recruited for phone interviews at community health fairs hosted by the African Cultural Alliance of North America (ACANA) and the African Family …

Intergenerational social mobility and self-rated health in Canada.

A growing body of research seeks to reveal the health effects of 'falling from grace' or 'rising from rags,' i.e., experiencing downward or upward mobility relative to one's family socioeconomic background. In this study, we mobilized a unique dataset, the 2012 Longitudinal and International Study of Adults linked to historical income data from the Canada Revenue Agency, to investigate associations between both educational and income mobility and self-rated health in a national sample of approximately 2500 women and 2300 men aged 25 to 50. Compared to educational immobility, extreme downward e

Mothering Machines: The Promise of Infant Incubators in the Early Twentieth Century.

Before incubators became a stable feature of hospital care for infants, North American audiences flocked to see tiny babies on display in incubator exhibits at fairs and carnivals. While the babies themselves were no doubt a draw, incubators also captured imaginations as symbols of scientific progress. Described as mechanical wombs, these medical machines were praised as substitute mothers, offering even better care to these babies than their own parents. Examining the popular media and medical discourse surrounding incubator shows, this paper explores the specific promise of the incubator as
