Health is a multidimensional concept and consists of different dimensions such as mental and physical health. In this study, we built on this conception of health by investigating the effects of multidimensional health patterns (MHP) on labor force participation among older workers. We used data from 5`006 older workers (mean age: 55.8 years; 56% female) from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe. In a first step, we conducted a latent transition analysis with four health indicators (chronic diseases, limitations with activities, self-perceived health, and depressive symptoms)

Seafarers experience a lot of job-related risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Considering the healthy-worker effect due to the biennial pre-employment examination and the periodical medical fitness tests, a (slightly) elevated risk for CVD among seafarers is assumed compared to the reference population ashore. In seafaring, the most important, influenceable risk factors for CVD refer to the ship-specific stress situation, the malnutrition and the lack of exercises on board. Furthermore, the prognosis of acute severe CVD often depends on the measures taken in the first few hours aft

Factors affecting worker tolerance of respiratory personal protective devices are inadequately understood. This study evaluates whether respirator-type loads affected the switch from nasal to oral breathing. Eleven healthy subjects were studied under progressive exercise conditions, using a respirator full-face mask with inspiratory resistance (I), pressure breathing (P) (10 cm H2O end-expiratory pressure), or no load (N). A rapid-response thermistor was used to determine whether flow was predominantly oral or nasal. Both P and I increased the percentage of time that breathing was predominantl

Silicosis is the most common occupational lung disease in Egypt where its prevalence rate ranges from 18.5 % to 45.8% among workers exposed to free crystalline silica dust. Despite its high prevalence, there is a lack of enforcement of exposure limits, availability and use of personal protective equipment, and occupational health education programs. These factors led the authors to study this unique working population; to the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that investigates the effect of exposure to crystalline silica on select immune response of exposed Egyptian phosphate miner

BACKGROUND: Historically, working in iron-ore mines has been associated with an increased risk of lung cancer and silicosis. However, studies on other causes of mortality are inconsistent and in the case of cancer incidence, sparse. The aim of this study was to examine the association between iron-ore mining, mortality and cancer incidence.
METHODS: A 54-year cohort study on iron-ore miners from mines in northern Sweden was carried out comprising 13,000 workers. Standardized rate ratios were calculated comparing the disease frequency, mortality, and cancer incidence with that of the general p

PURPOSE: Epidemiological studies in nuclear industry workers can produce relevant information to better appreciate the health risks related to chronic external exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation (IR). This work examined the relations between exposure to IR and mortality in workers at the French Electricity Company (EDF), followed up to year 2003.
METHODS: Permanent staff who had worked for at least 1 year at EDF during period 1961-1994 and who had been monitored for exposure to IR were included (n = 22,393). One-sided trend tests for mortality according to cumulative dose and relativ

OBJECTIVES: Epidemiologic studies have illustrated a possible association between occupational exposure to lead and cancer, specifically can … lack of vital status information. Cancer incidence in this cohort was expected to be low due to the Healthy Worker Effect and young age. Further follow-up of this cohort may be warranted since additional cancers may accrue as time from first exposure increases. Increased worker cohort information would also improve this type of study.

Metal fume fever (MFF) is an acute response to the inhalation of heavy metals used in industry. The patient typically experiences symptoms of cough, fever, chills, malaise, and myalgia that are self-limited and of short duration. Wheezing may occur and pulmonary function may be acutely impaired with a decrease in lung volumes and diffusing capacity of carbon monoxide. Nevertheless, respiratory function quickly returns to normal, and persistent pulmonary insufficiency is unusual. Irritant-induced asthma is a non-immunogenic form of airway injury that may be associated with industrial inhalation

The mortality experience of 1345 male workers in a lead and zinc smelting plant was followed from 1973 to 1991. Information on the erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) phenotype was available for 1,222 (90.9%) cohort members, which provided the opportunity to compare the mortality experience of G6PD-deficient subjects to wild-type-G6PD coworkers with similar exposure to lead. A significant decrease in mortality was observed among the total cohort as well as among the subcohort of production and maintenance workers. Most deaths (27 of 31) and all cancer deaths occurred among pro

The purpose of this study was to compare the maximum and job simulated hand grip strength in both healthy workers and those suffering from mild and severe stages of musculoskeletal disorders. Three groups of 10 female industrial workers each were recruited after a detailed screening for musculoskeletal disorders: one group of 10 healthy workers (GI) and two other groups (GII and GIII) consisting of workers suffering from mild and severe upper limbs disorders, respectively. A special device was built to reproduce a similar prehension pattern (open palmar) to that used on the job. This was calib

Serial measurements of urinary adrenaline, noradrenaline, and 11-hydroxycorticosteroid excretion were performed on 32 healthy men under two conditions of work stress; piecework and work on assembly line. A statistically significant increase in adrenaline, noradrenaline, and 11-hydroxycorticosteroids was observed for piecework and assembly line workers compared with salaried and 'ordinary' workers. The results support the assumption that psychosocial factors of an everyday type have significant effects on the sympathoadrenomedullary and adrenocortical function.

OBJECTIVES: Night-shift work has been associated with several negative effects on worker's health, possibly due to circadian desynchronization, sleep deprivation and suppression of nocturnal melatonin secretion including exposure to light during the work shift. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of fixed night-shift work versus day-shift work on the sleep-wake cycle and on the night and day levels of cortisol and melatonin.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Saliva samples were obtained from 36 individuals, 19 day workers (12 women and 7 men) and 17 night workers (12 women and 5 men) f

Occupational exposure to polypropylene flock may increase the risk of respiratory symptoms and disease. A cross-sectional study evaluated respiratory effects of polypropylene flock among workers at a large manufacturing facility. Participants completed a questionnaire and spirometry testing; those with abnormal findings received a physical examination. Exposure was based on work history in polypropylene production rooms. Fifty-five workers (39 exposed; 16 unexposed) participated. Exposed workers (59%) more frequently reported phlegm in the past 12 mo compared with unexposed workers (25%) (P =

BACKGROUND: Neuropathy can be one of the symptoms of the toxic effect of lead on the nervous system. The aim of this work was to perform clinical and neurophysiological assessment of the peripheral nervous system in workers exposed to lead.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 34 exposed workers and 20 healthy controls. Motor (ulnar, peroneal) and sensory (ulnar, sural) conduction velocity as well as conduction velocity distribution in ulnar n. and EMG from the I. interosseus muscle were assayed. CONCLUSIONS: A healthy worker effect is observed in this new cohort of workers involved in the uranium cycle. Collection of individual information on internal uranium exposure as well as other risk factors is underway, to allow for the investigation of uranium-related risks.
