A case of multiple primary tumors observed in the heart base and in the lung of a 7-year-old intact female, flat-coated retriever was reported. Morphological differences between both tumors and detailed immunohistochemical study revealed that the cardiac neoplasm was as a malignant aortic body tumor and the lung tumor was a pulmonary histiocytic sarcoma. The occurrence of aortic body tumor with other primary neoplasms has been previously reported in animals suggesting that this might be a common presentation in dogs.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour of the heart is an exceedingly rare benign neoplasm. While benign, without prompt management its impact can be devastating. Tetralogy of Fallot with absent pulmonary valve is a rare form of CHD. We present the first documented case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour of the heart in the presence of tetralogy of Fallot with absent pulmonary valve.

The correctness of selection, coding and registration of underlying cause-of-death is important for the quality of mortality statistics. One measure to improve quality is the query to the certifier for verification of the underlying cause-of-death. In Finland, 3478 death certificates, 7.1% of total 49074 certifications in 1995, were considered questionable by statisticians. The expert panel at Statistics Finland was able to resolve 2813 (80.9%) of them. However, 665 (19.1%) certificates needed to be further queried from the certifier. Of these, 318 (47.8%) were re-assigned to another ICD-9 cat

Herein is reported a series of five patients with myeloid neoplasms presenting hepatic complications in whose liver biopsy revealed obstruction of sinusoids by platelet aggregates associated to liver extramedullary haematopoiesis. Indication of liver biopsies was jaundice, unexplained hepatomegaly or portal hypertension. Haematological disorders were classified according to the World Health Organisation. Molecular profile was established in all cases as well as grade of liver extramedullary haematopoiesis and myelofibrosis. The patients were four men and one woman aged from 50 to 82 years. Two

Primary cardiac lymphoma (PCL) is among the rarest heart neoplasms. Its estimated incidence is about 1%-2% among primary cardiac tumor and 0.5% of extranodal lymphoma. It usually causes heart failure, pericardial effusion, tamponade, and arrhythmias. Prognosis is poor; treatment is combined medical and surgical. We described the case of a 62-year-old male with PLC that presented with syncope and cardiac tamponade, submitted to R-CHOP therapy because of failure of surgery. Clinical state is stable 3 months after diagnosis and first chemotherapy cycle.

We present a unique case of cardiac pseudopyogenic granuloma in a 61-year-old man that underwent orthotopic heart transplantation for end-stage ischemic heart disease. The lesion was an incidental pathological finding in the allograft removed for chronic graft vascular disease. This lesion is attributed to the minor trauma of the biopsy in the right side of the heart following cardiac transplantation. The cardiac right side can be considered the venous side of the heart; therefore, we consider the lesion a mimicker of an intravenous pyogenic granuloma. Pseudopyogenic granuloma may represent or

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a rare neoplasm of soft tissue that usually arises in the respiratory tract, nasal cavity, sinuses, and nasopharynx. It is even more uncommon for it to arise either in the testis or heart. We report the presentation of a case where plasmacytomas were found sequentially in the testis, subcutaneous tissue, and heart. EMP usually has a good prognosis except when it involves the heart. Our patient survived for only 15 months post autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Thoracic calcifications are found in the following locations: mediastinum, lung, pleura, cardiovascular system, and thoracic wall. The calcifications of the mediastinum include mostly inflammatory lesions and malignant neoplasms. Pulmonary calcifications are mainly inflammatory lesions and metastases of osteosarcomas. Where the cardiovascular system is concerned, the most common calcifications are those of the heart relating to tumors or surgery. Calcifications of the aortic wall and valve calcifications can be found. In the thoracic wall there are calcifications of the bone and of soft tissue

BACKGROUND: Intracardiac leiomyomatosis (ICL) is a rare benign neoplasm of the smooth muscle in the uterus extending into the heart. Complete resection is difficult because of the extensive range.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of one-stage complete resection of a giant ICL with moderate hypothermia extracorporeal circulation and beating heart technique.
CONCLUSIONS: The outcome of 36 months follow-up was very good.

Heart transplantation is currently the definitive gold standard surgical approach in the treatment of refractory heart failure. However, the shortage of donors limits the achievement of a greater number of heart transplants, in which the use of mechanical circulatory support devices is increasing. With well-established indications and contraindications, as well as diagnosis and treatment of rejection through defined protocols of immunosuppression, the outcomes of heart transplantation are very favorable. Among early complications that can impact survival are primary graft failure, right ventri

Cystic tumors of the atrioventricular node are rare primary cardiac neoplasms, frequently reported as a postmortem diagnosis during autopsy. Despite their small size, they can present with complete heart block or sudden cardiac death. Herein, we present a case of rapidly progressing high-grade atrioventricular block that improved after surgery. (Level of Difficulty: Intermediate.).

Cardiac hemangiomas are exceptionally rare tumors with an incidence of 1 to 3% of all detected benign heart neoplasms. We report 2 cases of left atrial hemangioma of which only one associated with clinical symptoms such as dyspnea and palpitations. Two years following surgical excision of the tumors, there was no echocardiographic evidence of recurrence.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) imposes a heavy burden on both patients and their families. However, there are no reports on the health disparities between residents with long-term exposure to KBD risk factors in endemic and non-endemic areas.
WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: For ischemic heart diseases, the age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) were significantly higher in endemic areas, particularly among males, residents aged ≥65 years, and residents in economically developed regions. For malignant neoplasms of the digestive organs, ASMR was higher in end

Severe anemia is commonly treated with red blood cell transfusion. Clinical trials have demonstrated that a restrictive transfusion strategy of 7 to 8 g/dL is as safe as a liberal transfusion strategy of 9 to 10 g/dL in many clinical settings. Evidence is lacking for subgroups of patients, including those with preexisting coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and myelodysplastic neoplasms. We present 3 clinical vignettes that highlight the clinical challenges in caring for patients with coronary artery disease with gastrointestinal bleeding, congestive

Benign non-myxomatous neoplasms of the heart are rare, and lipomas are among those least often encountered. We report the case of a 38-year-old man who presented with palpitations of recent onset, and was found to have a lipoma attached to the free wall of the right atrium. The successful surgical excision of the lipoma is described.

BACKGROUND: Chagas' disease is the illness caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi and it is still endemic in Latin America. Heart transplantation is a therapeutic option for patients with end-stage Chagas' cardiomyopathy. Nevertheless, reactivation may occur after transplantation, leading to higher morbidity and graft dysfunction. This study aimed to identify risk factors for Chagas' disease reactivation episodes.
METHODS: This investigation is a retrospective cohort study of all Chagas' disease heart transplant recipients from September 1985 through September 2004. Clinical, microbiologic

Sudden unexpected death accounts for 200,000-400,000 deaths each year in the United States. Although the vast majority of these fatalities are related to atherosclerotic heart disease, a small percentage (approximately 0.0025%) stem from primary cardiac neoplasms. There have been 120 cases of sudden death attributed to primary cardiac tumors in the (published) literature. Although 103 of these lesions were histologically benign (86%), their intracardiac locations precipitated conductive and hemodynamic abnormalities that resulted in sudden death. These tumors are usually easily recognized at n

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are relatively rare neoplasms thought to originate from the submesothelial connective tissue. SFTs have been described in a variety of sites, including the pleura, orbit, lower respiratory tract, peritoneal cavity and heart. These neoplasms are usually benign, though locally aggressive, and metastatic behaviour has been observed in some cases. We describe a case of a 61-year-old man presenting with weight loss, poor appetite, malaise, worsening dyspnoea on exertion and lower extremity oedema, who was found to have a gigantic-21×21 cm-tumour occupying the entire
