A Review on Heat Stress in Broiler Chickens: Mechanisms, Effects and Mitigation Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Heat stress (HS) is a major environmental challenge for broilers, particularly under rising global temperatures and high humidity. Broiler chickens are highly susceptible because of their rapid growth rate, high metabolic heat production, limited thermoregulatory capacity and genetic selection for fast growth. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to synthesise current evidence, evaluate the effectiveness of existing mitigation strategies, identify key knowledge gaps and provide future research directions to improve broiler resilience, welfare and productivity under increasingly HS conditio

The effect of different levels of heat stress on the behaviour of cows at different stage of lactation.

Rising temperatures and humidity increasingly challenge the welfare and productivity of dairy cows worldwide. Behavioural changes are among the earliest responses to heat stress, reflecting animals' efforts to reduce heat load. This study investigated how heat stress and lactation stage interact to influence the behaviour of Holstein Friesian cows. Data were collected from 60 cows between 20 June and July 20, 2024, with 1680 records of eating, ruminating, and inactivity times. Cows were grouped by lactation stage: early (days in milk, (DIM) ≤ 60), mid (DIM 61-180), and late (DIM >180). Behavio

Review: Ruminant heat-stress terminology.

With increasing climate variability, there is a rise in the exposure to, and incidence of, ruminant heat stress (HS), increasing the requirement for focused research. As such, precise terminology is crucial to maintain effective communication and knowledge advancement. Despite this, several key terms are currently defined inconsistently, leading to confusion and misinterpretation. This paper examines the historical and contemporary use of the terms 'resistance', 'tolerance', 'resilience', and 'susceptibility' across various disciplines, revealing significant ambiguities that hinder both resear

[Heat illness].

Thermoregulation keeps the normal body temperature of humans at approximately 37 °C. However, as a result of heat load - both endogenous and exogenous heat - it can occur that the body is unable to dissipate excess heat, leading to an increase in the core body temperature. This can result in various heat illnesses, ranging from mild, non-life-threatening conditions, such as heat rash, heat edema, heat cramps, heat syncope and exercise associated collapse to life-threatening conditions, namely exertional heatstroke and classic heatstroke. Exertional heatstroke is the result of strenuous exercis

Association of ambient extreme heat with pediatric morbidity: a scoping review.

Global climate change is leading to higher ambient temperatures and more frequent heatwaves. To date, impacts of ambient extreme heat on childhood morbidity have been understudied, although-given children's physiologic susceptibility, with smaller body surface-to-mass ratios, and many years of increasing temperatures ahead-there is an urgent need for better information to inform public health policies and clinical approaches. In this review, we aim to (1) identify pediatric morbidity outcomes previously associated with extreme heat, (2) to identify predisposing co-morbidities which may make ch

The effects of intermittent feeding and cold water on welfare status and meat quality in broiler chickens reared under daily heat stress.

This study was aimed to determine the effects of feeding type (ad libitum: AF and intermittent: IF) and water temperature (normal: NW and cold: CW) treatments on welfare status and meat quality in fast-growing broiler chickens reared under daily heat stress between 22 and 42 days of age. The chickens' panting rate and rectal temperature were determined at 4, 5, and 6 weeks of age and twice a week in 3 female and 3 male chickens in each pen. Welfare traits such as foot pad dermatitis (FPD), hock burn (HB), breast burn (BB), and leg problems (LP) were examined individually at 42 days of age. At

JRK binds satellite III DNA and is necessary for the heat shock response.

JRK is a DNA-binding protein of the pogo superfamily of transposons, which includes the well-known centromere binding protein B (CENP-B). Jrk null mice exhibit epilepsy, and growth and reproductive disorders, consistent with its relatively high expression in the brain and reproductive tissues. Human JRK DNA variants and gene expression levels are implicated in cancers and neuropsychiatric disorders. JRK protein modulates β-catenin-TCF activity but little is known of its cellular functions. Based on its homology to CENP-B, we determined whether JRK binds centromeric or other satellite DNAs. We

Occupational heat stress.

Heat stress is an occupational health problem affecting Man in diverse, hostile environments ranging from deep mining to outer space. Healthy, young military recruits and industrial workers exposed to hot, humid environments are typically at risk. The International Classification of Diseases classifies heat disorders into 10 separate entities, of which the most clinically significant are heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The latter is a medical emergency of the first order. Clinical management hinges upon early treatment based on a high index of suspicion. Effective preventive meas

PigStressNet: A Real-Time Lightweight Vision System for On-Farm Heat Stress Monitoring via Attention-Guided Feature Refinement.

Heat stress severely impacts pig welfare and farm productivity. However, existing methods lack the capability to detect subtle physiological cues (e.g., skin erythema) in complex farm environments while maintaining real-time efficiency. This paper proposes PigStressNet, a novel lightweight detector designed for accurate and efficient heat stress recognition. Our approach integrates four key innovations: (1) a Normalization-based Attention Module (NAM) integrated into the backbone network enhances sensitivity to localized features critical for heat stress, such as posture and skin erythema; (2)

Chronic heat stress induces hepatic injury, alters hematological parameters, thermotolerance response in gilts through liver multi-omics analysis.

Global climate warming elevates temperatures, increasing pigs' heat stress susceptibility and metabolic heat production, thereby intensifying heat-related challenges. This study examines chronic heat stress (HS) effects on hematological traits and hepatic responses in gilts. During HS, respiratory rate and surface temperature rose significantly, while rectal temperature stabilized. In the HS group, white blood cell count, aonocyte percentage, eosinophil percentage, absolute eosinophil count, absolute neutrophil count, absolute monocyte count, absolute basophil count, hematocrit, and mean corpu

Effects of heat stress on growth performance, physiological responses, and carcass traits in broilers.

High environmental temperatures lead to metabolic changes, body weight reduction, and high mortality in chickens, affecting poultry production worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of heat stress, assessed by the temperature-humidity index (THI), on the growth performance, physiological response, carcasses, and hematological traits of broilers. A total of 200 broilers (between 17 and 31 days old) were kept in thermoneutral conditions (21 °C; 60% relative humidity, RH) for 3 days during the adaptation period, followed by 14 days of exposure to the experimental treatments. The broi

Exertional Heat Stroke Survival at the Falmouth Road Race: 180 New Cases With Expanded Analysis.

Rotator cuff pathology is present in nearly half the adult population over the age of 50 years and remains a leading cause of shoulder pain and dysfunction. These musculotendinous injuries may be the result of an acute trauma or chronic degeneration. Clinical examination involves inspection, range of motion, and strength assessment with special testing used to isolate the involved rotator cuff muscles. The classification of these injuries involves identification of tear size, thickness, morphology, and the presence of tendon retraction or muscular atrophy to guide clinical management. Magnetic

Mechanisms underlying reproductive responses of Japanese quails to heat stress conditions.

Exposure to heat stress can cause a significant increase in the death rate and disease susceptibility of poultry birds, ultimately impacting the profitability of the poultry industry. Despite being a more economical choice, Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) are not immune to the harmful effects of heat stress. Quails may experience negative effects on their reproductive performance due to excessive reactive molecules caused by heat stress. However, they have developed various mechanisms to maintain their reproductive abilities in such conditions. The neuroendocrine system in birds plays a vi

Human temperature regulation under heat stress in health, disease, and injury.

The human body constantly exchanges heat with the environment. Temperature regulation is a homeostatic feedback control system that ensures deep body temperature is maintained within narrow limits despite wide variations in environmental conditions and activity-related elevations in metabolic heat production. Extensive research has been performed to study the physiological regulation of deep body temperature. This review focuses on healthy and disordered human temperature regulation during heat stress. Central to this discussion is the notion that various morphological features, intrinsic fact

Cerebral Vascular Control and Metabolism in Heat Stress.

This review provides an in-depth update on the impact of heat stress on cerebrovascular functioning. The regulation of cerebral temperature, blood flow, and metabolism are discussed. We further provide an overview of vascular permeability, the neurocognitive changes, and the key clinical implications and pathologies known to confound cerebral functioning during hyperthermia. A reduction in cerebral blood flow (CBF), derived primarily from a respiratory-induced alkalosis, underscores the cerebrovascular changes to hyperthermia. Arterial pressures may also become compromised because of reduced p

Heatstroke is the most severe form of heat-related disorders that include mild heat intolerance, heat exhaustion and heat stress. The incidence of heat-related disorders is increasing due to several factors that include climate change, co-morbidities and drug usage. Patients with heatstroke present with a core body temperature above 40°C, multiorgan dysfunction and central nervous system disorder. The pathogenesis of heatstroke is not fully understood; however, heat-shock proteins, inflammatory cytokines and their modulators have been implicated.
