Multifunction hydrogen-bonded organic framework aerogel platform for detection and removal of heavy metal ions in pear juice.

Heavy metal ions (HMIs) in food pose significant health risks due to their bioaccumulation and toxicity, necessitating effective detection and remediation methods. This study explores a multifunctional hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF-16) wrapped in sodium alginate (SA) to form a stable HOF-16/SA aerogel for detecting and removing HMIs in pear juice. The HOF-16 fluorescence probe exhibits excellent sensitivity with limits of detection of 0.49, 0.60, and 0.44 μmol/L for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II), respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of HOF-16/SA aerogel for Pb(II), Cu(II), and

A Bioelectric Active Hydrogel Sensor for Trace Detection of Heavy Metal Ions in Livestock and Poultry Farm Wastewater.

Heavy metal contamination in livestock and poultry farm wastewater poses significant risks to both the environment and human health, so it is critical to accurately and rapidly quantify heavy metal ion concentrations in water. This research develops a bioelectric active hydrogel sensor for detecting heavy metal ions in livestock wastewater. The sensor integrates microbial surface display technology with graphene hydrogel, displaying glucose oxidase (GOx) on the surface of yeast cells, and covalently incorporating it into the graphene hydrogel through the bio-reduction activity of metal-reducin

A New Photoelectrocatalytic Water Purification System for Simultaneous Removal of Organic Pollutants and Heavy Metal Ions in Water.

A new photoelectrocatalytic water purification system was investigated by combining photocatalysis and electrochemistry. This configuration achieves simultaneous removal of both organic compounds and inorganic heavy metal ions from water by taking a carbon electrode as the working electrode and another electrode coated with a photocatalyst as the counter electrode. A negative bias potential is imparted onto the working electrode to induce the reduction of heavy metal ions, whereas the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants on the counter electrode is amplified via the transfer of pho

Mussel-inspired magnetic adsorbent MnO2/PDA@Fe3O4 for removing heavy metal ions contaminants in single and mixed systems.

Heavy metal pollution has been a magnificent concern for a long period. A novel magnetic material, MnO2/PDA@Fe3O4, was prepared in this paper. With the assistance of multiple characterization methods, it was confirmed that polydopamine coated the magnetic nucleus and acted as a dense intermediate layer for MnO2 attachment. Having superior adsorption performance, MnO2/PDA@Fe3O4 could remove heavy metal cations efficiently no matter in single or mixed systems. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated by the Langmuir model for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) were 295.01 mg/g, 130.30 mg/g, and 115.

Re-irradiation with protons or heavy ions with focus on head and neck, skull base and brain malignancies.

Re-irradiation can offer a potentially curative solution in case of progression after initial therapy; however, a second course of radiotherapy can be associated with an increased risk of severe side-effects. Particle therapy with protons and especially carbon ions spares surrounding tissue better than most photon techniques, thus it is of high potential for re-irradiation. Irradiation of tumors of the brain, head and neck and skull base involves several delicate risk organs, e.g. optic system, brainstem, salivary gland or swallowing muscles. Adequate local control rates with tolerable side-ef

Accelerator-Based Tests of Shielding Effectiveness of Different Materials and Multilayers using High-Energy Light and Heavy Ions.

The roadmap for space exploration foresees longer journeys and further excursions outside low-Earth orbit as well as the establishment of permanent outposts on other celestial bodies, such as the Moon or Mars. The design of spacecrafts and habitats depends heavily on the mission scenario and must consider the radiation protection properties of the structural components as well as dedicated shielding. In fact, short- and long-term effects caused by exposure to cosmic radiation are now considered among the main health risks of space travel. One of the current strategies is to find multifunctiona

Host-Guest Extraction of Heavy Metal Ions with p-t-Butylcalix[8]arene from Ammonia or Amine Solutions.

The capacities of the p-t-butylcalix[8]arene (abbreviated as H8L) host to extract toxic divalent heavy metal ions and silver from aqueous solution phases containing ammonia or ethylene diamine to an organic phase (nitrobenzene, dichloromethane, or chloroform) were carried out. When the metal ions were extracted from an aqueous ammonia solution, the metal ion selectivity for extraction was found to decrease in the order Cd2+> Ni2+> Cu2+> Ag+> Co2+> Zn2+. When the aqueous phase contained ethylene diamine, excellent extraction efficiencies of 97% and 90% were observed for the heavy metal ions Cu2

Simultaneous and synergistic conversion of dyes and heavy metal ions in aqueous TiO2 suspensions under visible-light illumination.

This study reports synergistic effects in the simultaneous conversion of dyes and heavy metal ions in aqueous TiO2/dye/metal ion systems (ternary components) under visible light (lambda > 420 nm). TiO2/Cr(VI)/Acid Orange 7 (AO7), TiO2/Cr(VI)/Rhodamine B (RhB), TiO2/Ag+/AO7, and TiO2/Ag+/RhB were chosen as test systems. Although dyes can be degraded in TiO2 suspensions under visible light, their removal rates were markedly enhanced in the presence of metal ions. Similarly, the reduction rates of metal ions in visible-light-illuminated TiO2 suspensions were negligible, but they were highly accel

Investigation of the stability of hardened slag paste for the stabilization/solidification of wastes containing heavy metal ions.

We have studied the effect of chromium ions and lead ions on the chemical stability of hardened slag paste with toxic wastes during the stabilization/solidification process. The influences of Cr and Pb ions on the hydration of slag were also investigated. Sodium silicate (Na(2)SiO(3)), 5 wt.% of slag, was used as an alkali activator for slag hydration. The physical stability of hardened paste containing partial replacement of slag with fly ash and gypsum was also examined. When gypsum was added to slag, the compressive strength of hardened slag paste developed, accompanying the activation of a

Heavy metal ion inhibition studies of human, sheep and fish α-carbonic anhydrases.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs, EC 4.2.1.1) were purified from sheep kidney (sCA IV), from the liver of the teleost fish Dicentrarchus labrax (dCA) and from human erythrocytes (hCA I and hCA II). The purification procedure consisted of a single step affinity chromatography on Sepharose 4B-tyrosine-sulfanilamide. The kinetic parameters of these enzymes were determined for their esterase activity with 4-nitrophenyl acetate as substrate. The following metal ions, Pb(2+), Co(2+), Hg(2+), Cd(2+), Zn(2+), Se(2+), Cu(2+), Al(3+) and Mn(3+) showed inhibitory effects on these enzymes. The tested metal ions i

Recent Advances in Paper-Based Microfluidic Devices for Heavy Metal Ion Detection: A Review.

Heavy metal ion pollution has emerged as a global issue. These contaminants are not only present in water sources but are also commonly detected in air, soil, food, and consumer products, posing serious risks to ecosystems and human health. Even at very low concentrations, heavy metal ions can exhibit substantial toxicity. Traditional methods for the detection of heavy metal ions typically require complex laboratory equipment and specialized technicians, making them inadequate for rapid on-site monitoring. Microfluidic technology, as an innovative platform capable of precisely controlling and

Unveiling Swift Heavy Ion Track Morphology in Sr-Based High-Entropy Perovskites.

The incorporation of multiple cations on a single lattice site in the high-entropy oxides is considered the key driving factor for modifying the known atomic-level response to energetic ion irradiation due to the presence of structural disorder; however, these effects are not well-understood yet. In this work, we present atomic-level insight into irradiation-induced nanoscale phase transformations in a perovskite-structured high-entropy oxide, Sr(Zr0.2Sn0.2Ti0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2)O3 (Sr(HE)O3), subjected to 774 MeV swift Xe heavy ions, where damage is dominated by inelastic ion-lattice interactions. Deep learning-based prediction of Monte Carlo dose distribution for heavy ion therapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Current methods, like treatment planning system algorithms (TPSDose), lack accuracy, whereas Monte Carlo dose distribution (MCDose) is accurate but computationally intensive. We proposed a deep learning (DL) model for rapid prediction of Monte Carlo simulated dose distribution (MCDose) in heavy ion therapy (HIT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed a DL model - the Cascade Hierarchically Densely 3D U-Net (CHD U-Net) - to predict MCDose using computed tomography images and TPSDose of 67 head-and-neck patients and 30 thorax-and-abdomen patients. We also compared the resu

TEMPO-oxidized cellulose hydrogel as a high-capacity and reusable heavy metal ion adsorbent.

Nitroxy radical catalyzed oxidation with hypochlorite/bromide (TEMPO-mediated oxidation) was performed on a cellulose hydrogel prepared using LiOH/urea solvent. TEMPO oxidation successfully introduced carboxyl groups onto the surface of the cellulose hydrogel with retention of the gel structure and its nanoporous property. The equilibrium measurement of Cu(2+) adsorption showed favorable interaction with Cu(2+) and high maximum adsorption capacity. In addition, over 98% of the adsorbed Cu(2+) was recovered using acid treatment, and the subsequent washing allowed the TEMPO-oxidized gels to be u

Dual responsive fluorescent probe for exploring hypochlorite and sulfur dioxide in different heavy metal ions related stress models.

The danger of heavy metal pollution has drawn the global concern of researchers in recent decades, especially multiple heavy metal pollution. Heavy metal pollution induced stress may cause oxidative stress and redox balance disruption in living organism, and further trigger other secondary stresses. Fluorescent imaging analysis is considered to be effective method for real-time visualization of complex bioactive molecules in situ due to their non-destruction, high sensitivity and specificity. It is still relatively rare that bifunctional fluorescent probe for imaging redox-correlated molecules
