There are a number of Helicobacter species that will readily colonise the mouse stomach for the duration of the animal's life. They are Helicobacter felis, "Helicobacter heilmannii" and Helicobacter pylori. Early studies on long-term infection of BALB/c mice showed the presence of lesions resembling low-grade gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Because of the suggestion that H. pylori was the cause of these tumors in humans, this phenomenon was studied further as it was reasoned that the Helicobacter-infected mice would provide a valuable model of the human disease. In addition to eradication of Helicobacter pylori, chemotherapy with anticancer agents, and radiation therapy, the treatment with molecular target drugs including rituximab, a CD20 antagonist, is one of the promising new regimens. The mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is histologically characterized by rich distribution of the microvascular network consisting of the immature capillaries, lymphatics and venules, and this microvascular network could be the target of the new pharmacotherapy in addition to the direct action on the accumulated B lymphocytes. We have established the

BACKGROUND: At present, eradication regimens for non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) have not been established yet. We investigated effectiveness of the standard triple-drug combination therapy for Helicobacter pylori eradication and of a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) monotherapy in eradication of NHPH.
METHODS: Subjects were the patients who were diagnosed with NHPH-infected gastritis based on microscopic findings, helical-shaped organisms obviously larger than Helicobacter pylori, in the gastric mucosal specimens using Giemsa staining at Kenwakai Hospital between November 2010 and Sep

BACKGROUND: The canine Gram-negative Helicobacter bizzozeronii is one of seven species in Helicobacter heilmannii sensu lato that are detected in 0.17-2.3% of the gastric biopsies of human patients with gastric symptoms. At the present, H. bizzozeronii is the only non-pylori gastric Helicobacter sp. cultivated from human patients and is therefore a good alternative model of human gastric Helicobacter disease. We recently sequenced the genome of the H. bizzozeronii human strain CIII-1, isolated in 2008 from a 47-year old Finnish woman suffering from severe dyspeptic symptoms. In this study, we

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Helicobacter and Wolinella are gram-negative bacteria belonging to the Helicobacteraceae family. While Helicobacter species are well-known for their role in gastric disorders, emerging evidence suggests their presence in the oral cavity and potential involvement in periodontal diseases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Helicobacter and Wolinella species were investigated in 122 saliva and periodontal plaque samples from dogs and cats by DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and 16S rDNA gene identification.
RESULTS: Comparing the periodontitis group and the healthy group, a hig

Helicobacter species (spp.) is a gram-negative spiral-shaped motile bacterium that causes gastritis in pigs and also colonizes in the human stomach. The present study assessed the prevalence of Helicobacter spp. in pig gastric mucosa and the stool of pig farmers in Assam, India. A total of 403 stomach samples from pig slaughter points, 74 necropsy samples of pigs from pig farms, and 97 stool samples from pig farmers were collected. Among the pig stomach samples, 43 (20.09%) of those with gastritis showed the presence of Gram-negative, spiral-shaped organisms, while only 3.04% of stomach sample

Helicobacter species have been reported in animals, some of which are of zoonotic importance. This study aimed to detect Helicobacter species among human and animal samples using conventional PCR assays and to identify their zoonotic potentials. Helicobacter species was identified in human and animal samples by genus-specific PCR assays and phylogenetic analysis of partial sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene. The results revealed that Helicobacter species DNA was detected in 13 of 29 (44.83%) of the human samples. H. pylori was identified in 2 (15.38%), and H. bovis was detected in 4 (30.

Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) is a biological marker used to diagnose and monitor the progression of various cancers. Elevated CA 19-9 has also been sporadically observed in Helicobacter pylori infected patients. Similar to H. pylori, animalhosted non-H. pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) species can induce gastroduodenal lesions in humans. We report the first case of CA 19-9 elevation related to H. suis gastritis and its normalisation after eradication. A CA 19-9 screening prescribed as part of a regular check up by the general practitioner was found elevated in a 68-year-old man presenting chr

Three cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) had a clinical history of chronic spiral bacteria-associated gastritis and three cheetahs had no clinical history of gastritis. Gastric biopsies were obtained from all six cheetahs prior to treatment for gastritis and 3 wk and 1 yr posttreatment. The cheetahs were treated with tetracycline hydrochloride 500 mg p.o. q.i.d., metronidazole 250 mg p.o. q.i.d., and bismuth subsalicylate 300 mg p.o. q.i.d. Each drug was administered concurrently for 7 days. Following this treatment, each cheetah was maintained on 300 mg bismuth subsalicylate p.o. s.i.d. for 1 yr. Th

Since the discovery of the human pathogen Helicobacter pylori, various other Helicobacter species have been identified in the stomach of domesticated and wild mammals. To better understand the evolutionary history of these ecologically similar but genetically distinct species, we analyzed 108 gastric Helicobacter genomes and included 54 enterohepatic Helicobacter genomes for comparison purposes. An admixture analysis supported the presence of an ecological barrier, preventing the genetic exchange between the gastric and enterohepatic Helicobacter species, and unraveled many gene flow events wi

BACKGROUND: Neuronal damage in idiopathic parkinsonism may be in response to ubiquitous occult infection. Since peptic ulceration is prodromal, Helicobacter is a prime candidate.
AIM: To consider the candidature of Helicobacter in parkinsonism with cachexia.
METHODS: We explore the relationship between being underweight and inflammatory products in 124 subjects with idiopathic parkinsonism and 195 controls, and present the first case-series evidence of efficacy of Helicobacter eradication, in parkinsonism advanced to the stage of cachexia.
RESULTS: Association of a low body mass index with

Human infections with non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter species (NHPH) are rare. The diagnosis of such infection relies strongly on histological methods, as these bacteria cannot be easily cultured. We describe microbiological analyses that were performed on three cases of infection reported between 2020 and 2023, for which molecular biology was used to identify the species and facilitate the investigation of markers of resistance to macrolides and fluoroquinolones. 16S rRNA sequencing identified two Helicobacter suis strains and one Helicobacter heilmannii sensu strictostrain. Sequencing o

Ten captive neotropical Brazilian feline were submitted to gastroscopic examination and samples of gastric mucosa from fundus, corpus and pyloric antrum were evaluated for the presence of Helicobacter species. Warthin-Starry (WS) staining and PCR assay with species-specific primers and enzymatic cleavage were applied for bacterial detection and identification. Histological lesions were evaluated by haematoxylin and eosin staining. All animals showed normal gross aspect of gastric mucosa. Helicobacter heilmannii was confirmed in 100% of the samples by WS and PCR assay. Mild lymphocytic infiltra

Although the vast majority of peptic ulcers are widely considered as related to the germ Helicobacter pylori, ulcers exhibiting absence of this infection are increasingly seen in recent years. This fact has been partly related to a decreased prevalence of Helicobacter pylori among the population, a consequence of improved hygiene and housing conditions. Causes in relation to Helicobacter pylori-negative ulcers are: 1. Falsely negative infection diagnostic tests. They represent 25% of ulcers considered as Helicobacter pylori-negative in health-care practice (falsely negative diagnostic test 5%,

Interest in possible microbiological causes of gastritis has increased significantly since the discovery of Helicobacter pylori (Hp). Recently a spiral bacterium named Helicobacter heilmannii (Hh) was described in association with chronic gastritis in adult and pediatric patients. Comparisons between these two organisms, as well as the literature on Hh, have also been reviewed. The incidence of Hh gastritis is far lower than that of Hp gastritis. Concomitant infections by Hh and Hp are very rare. It is very probable that Hh gastritis is transmitted from domestic animals or pets to humans. The

The swimming strategies of unipolar flagellated bacteria are well known but little is known about how bipolar bacteria swim. Here we examine the motility of Helicobacter suis, a bipolar gastric-ulcer-causing bacterium that infects pigs and humans. Phase-contrast microscopy of unlabeled bacteria reveals flagella bundles in two conformations, extended away from the body (E) or flipped backwards and wrapped (W) around the body. We captured videos of the transition between these two states and observed three different swimming modes in broth: with one bundle rotating wrapped around the body and th
