Beneficial Effect of Olive Oil and Its Derivates: Focus on Hematological Neoplasm.

Olive oil (Olea europaea) is one of the major components of the Mediterranean diet and is composed of a greater percentage of monounsaturated fatty acids, such as oleic acid; polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as linoleic acid; and minor compounds, such as phenolic compounds, and particularly hydroxytyrosol. The latter, in fact, are of greater interest since they have found widespread use in popular medicine. In recent years, it has been documented that phenolic acids and in particular hydroxytyrosol have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiproliferative action and therefore interest in the

Subsequent malignant neoplasms after primary hematological malignancy in adult patients.

Patients with primary hematological malignancy (HM) are at an elevated risk of subsequent malignant neoplasms (SMNs), which is a common concern after treatment of primary cancer. We identified 45,533 patients aged ≥20 years and diagnosed with primary HM in Finland from 1992 to 2019 from the Finnish Cancer Registry and estimated standardized incidence ratios (SIR) and excess absolute risks per 1000 person-years (EAR) for SMNs. A total of 6076 SMNs were found (4604 solid and 1472 hematological SMNs). The SIRs were higher for hematological SMNs (SIR 4.9, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.7-5.2) comp

Unraveling germline predisposition in hematological neoplasms: Navigating complexity in the genomic era.

Genomic advancements have yielded pivotal insights into hematological neoplasms, particularly concerning germline predisposition mutations. Following the WHO 2016 revisions, dedicated segments were proposed to address these aspects. Current WHO 2022, ICC 2022, and ELN 2022 classifications recognize their significance, introducing more mutations and prompting integration into clinical practice. Approximately 5-10% of hematological neoplasm patients show germline predisposition gene mutations, rising with risk factors such as personal cancer history and familial antecedents, even in older adults

Absence of mutations on the SNF5 gene in hematological neoplasms with chromosome 22 abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: The relation with SNF5 mutation and chromosome 22 abnormalities is not clear in hematological neoplasms. METHODS: To elucidate the relevance of the SNF5 gene on 22q11.2, karyotypes were reviewed in 283 hematological neoplasms. Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) on 22q was analyzed in 21 plasma cell myelomas without chromosome 22 abnormalities. Polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) on the SNF5 gene was analyzed in 8 hematological neoplasms with 22q- or -22, and 8 chronic myelogenous leukemias (CMLs) in blast crisis. An evidence-based ordering algorithm for appropriate utilization of peripheral blood flow cytometry for hematologic neoplasms.

OBJECTIVE: Although peripheral blood flow cytometry (PBFC) can aid in the diagnosis of hematolymphoid malignancies, it is often ordered in clinical situations for which it is not useful. We hypothesized that patient clinical data could be used to design an algorithm to guide better test utilization and performance. METHODS: Patient records for 250 consecutive PBFC orders were reviewed to determine test indication, patient demographics and history, blood count, and leukocyte differential. These variables were analyzed to determine whether they could predict the detection of hematolymphoid mali

A case report of donor cell-derived hematologic neoplasms 9 years after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of blood cancers has been revolutionized by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Owing to this method, we are able to effectively treat most blood cancers. However, in some cases, one of the greatest problems is the risk of relapse. Most often, relapse of the disease manifests itself as cancer cells with the same characteristics as the primary cancer. Nevertheless, a very small percentage of patients develop other blood cancers from donor cells. Donor cell-derived hematologic neoplasms are extremely rare complications that arise after hematopoietic stem cell trans…

Факторы риска, выходящие за рамки воздействия химиотерапии на вторичные миелоидные неоплазмы после рака гематологов: исследование на основе СЭЭУ.

UNLABELLED.

Infections in patients with hematologic neoplasms and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: neutropenia, humoral, and splenic defects.

Infections are common in patients with hematologic neoplasms and following allogeneic hematopoietic transplantation. Neutropenia and defects in adaptive B-cell-mediated immunity and/or lack of splenic function predispose patients to a host of diverse and often serious infections. It is important to recognize that patients who undergo treatment for hematologic neoplasms may have mixed immune defects, and their vulnerability to infection may continue to change, in part as a reflection of the dynamic developments in the practice of oncology. The main obstacle in providing targeted, evidence-based…

[Cytogenetic study of 121 patients suffering from various hematologic neoplasms using the in situ hybridization technique].

PURPOSE: In situ hybridization (ISH) is an efficient tool for detecting chromosomal abnormalities in haemopoietic malignancies. Structural and numerical changes typical of most pathological entities can be detected using chromosome-specific probes on interphase or metaphase cells by means of this technique. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this report we present chromosome analysis combining conventional cytogenetics with ISH in 121 patients affected with different haematological diseases. We have studied 92 patients with B-chronic lymphoproliferative disorders (B-CLPD), 11 myelodysplastic syndromes

Association between ABO blood groups and hematological myeloid neoplasms in adolescents and adults.

BACKGROUND: Prior research suggests a potential link between ABO blood types and susceptibility to various malignancies. The correlation between ABO blood types and hematological myeloid neoplasms, however, remains inadequately explored. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the association between ABO blood groups and the incidence of hematological myeloid neoplasms in adolescents and adults. METHODS: In this retrospective clinical study, 1,022 adolescent and adult cases of myeloid neoplasms diagnosed at our institution were initially considered. After excluding conditions potentially linked t

The clinical and molecular diversity of mast cell leukemia with or without associated hematologic neoplasm.

Mast cell leukemia is a rare variant of advanced systemic mastocytosis characterized by at least 20% of mast cells in a bone marrow smear. We evaluated clinical and molecular characteristics of 28 patients with (n=20, 71%) or without an associated hematologic neoplasm. De novo mast cell leukemia was diagnosed in 16 of 28 (57%) patients and secondary mast cell leukemia evolving from other advanced systemic mastocytosis subtypes in 12 of 28 (43%) patients, of which 7 patients progressed while on cytoreductive treatment. Median bone marrow mast cell infiltration was 65% and median serum tryptase

Myeloid Neoplasms Meet Cardiovascular Epidemiology: A Call for Integrated Cardio-hematology Care.

As cancer survivorship continues to improve, cardiovascular disease (CVD) has become an increasingly important competing cause of morbidity and mortality among cancer survivors. In their population-based cohort from Piedmont, Italy, Dr. Catalano and his team reported a significantly elevated incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events among patients with myeloid neoplasms compared with the general population, with heterogeneity across disease subtypes. This commentary discusses the biological and clinical links between myeloid neoplasms and CVD, emphasizing the multifactorial pathwa

[Prophylactic efficacy of tixagevimab/cilgavimab in patients with hematological neoplasms: a single-center study].

We retrospectively analyzed the efficacy of tixagevimab/cilgavimab (Tix/Cil) in 142 patients (total of 157 injections) with hematological disorders. Fifteen patients (9.5%) were infected with coronavirus disease (COVID-19), and 3 of these remained infected even after repeated administration of Tix/Cil. Malignant lymphoma and multiple myeloma were the most frequent underlying disorders (frequencies of 18.9% and 17.5%, respectively). Whole genome sequencing of the Omicron variant was performed in 11 patients, and revealed sensitivity to Tix/Cil in only 2. In both cases, the severity of COVID-19

The role of LNK/SH2B3 genetic alterations in myeloproliferative neoplasms and other hematological disorders.

Malignant hematological diseases are mainly because of the occurrence of molecular abnormalities leading to the deregulation of signaling pathways essential for precise cell behavior. High-resolution genome analysis using microarray and large-scale sequencing have helped identify several important acquired gene mutations that are responsible for such signaling deregulations across different hematological malignancies. In particular, the genetic landscape of classical myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) has been in large part completed with the identification of driver mutations (targeting the
