PURPOSE: Gunshot hip injuries present major reconstructive challenges due to contamination, retained projectiles, soft-tissue compromise, and variable bone loss. Total hip replacement (THR) in this setting carries increased risks of infection, instability, and technical failure. This study evaluated the clinical and radiological outcomes of THR following gunshot hip trauma using a structured, severity-based subclassification to inform reconstructive strategy.
METHODS: Thirty patients with gunshot hip injuries underwent surgical debridement followed by THR, performed as single-stage or staged …

Aim: Spinal cord injury (SCI)-related flaccid paralysis may result in a debilitating hyperlordosis associated with a progressive hip flexion contracture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correction of hip flexion contractures and lumbar hyperlordosis in paraplegic patients that had a history of spinal cord injuries. Methods: A retrospective review was performed on 29 hips of 15 consecutive patients who underwent corrective surgeries for severe hip flexion deformity from 2006 to 2018. The mean age at surgery was 10.1 years (2.7 to 15.8), and the mean follow-up was 68 months (7 to 143).

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) is a valuable tool for assessing hip pain due to its wide availability, lack of radiation exposure, and cost-effectiveness. In evaluating sports injuries, dynamic US examination provides substantial benefits in diagnostic clarity and precision. The high prevalence of hip and pelvis injuries among athletes, coupled with the structural complexity and deep position of the hip joint, makes US a practical skill and an indispensable tool in the diagnosis of hip-related injuries. This paper aims to review the normal ultrasonographic anatomy of the hip joint and surroun

* While no single approach for total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been proven to be superior to others in terms of patient outcomes, the direct anterior approach (DAA) is becoming increasingly popular. * All of the described techniques for THA carry a small risk of nerve injury. * Identifying risk factors for nerve injury and mitigating these risks where feasible are imperative in order to reduce the incidence of this complication with any approach for THA.

With an increasing number of total hip and knee arthroplasties being done at surgical centers and vascular surgeons often not immediately available in this setting, it is critical for orthopaedic surgeons to be comfortable with the acute surgical management of vascular injuries. Although they are fortunately uncommon in primary total hip and knee arthroplasties, damage to a major artery or vein can have potentially devastating consequences. Surgeons operating both in a hospital and an ambulatory surgical setting should be familiar with techniques to gain proximal control of massive bleeding be

BACKGROUND: Dynamic hip screw (DHS) osteosynthesis represents one of the most frequently performed fixation methods in orthopedic practice. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential risk of vascular damage by DHS side-plate screws (PS) and plunging instruments for individual femoral vessels and screw positions.
METHODS: In ten hemipelvic/leg specimens mounted with a large femur distractor, a DHS system with a four-hole side-plate was inserted. PS were inserted in 3 consecutive courses with different inclinations in the frontal plane of 0° (group 1), - 30° posterior (group 2) an

OBJECTIVE: The purpose is to determine common injuries in recreational snowboarding as targets of preventive strategy and protective gear that reduces the overall risk of these injuries.
METHODS: The subjects comprised 5561 injured recreational snowboarders. On the basis of patients' self-reporting form, 'the common snowboarding injuries' (cut-off point >2.0% in prevalence) were decided, and all injured snowboarders were categorised into two groups: common injuries and the other injuries (control). Several factors such as age, gender, self-reported skill level, experienced seasons, experience

Labral tears in athletes can lead to disabling hip pain and affect their athletic performance. Other intra-articular lesions, including chondral injuries, capsular abnormalities, and ligamentum teres tears, commonly coexist with acetabular labral tears. Isolated athletic injury or repetitive traumatic activity can lead to labral tears; however, underlying structural (femoroacetabular impingement) and developmental abnormalities predisposing athletes to labral pathology must be addressed. Recent studies have demonstrated lesions associated with acetabular labral tears, and that labral tears rar

The common injuries and disorders that affect the hip joint, pelvis, and thigh and its surrounding tissues are discussed in this chapter. The clinician's challenge is to determine the severity of the injury and select the correct treatment and rehabilitation. Careful observation, diagnostic tests, and a thorough medical history aids this selection. The characteristics of several sports injuries are highlighted with the essential components of effective treatment and physical rehabilitation.

Understanding the complex anatomy and development of the hip is crucial for diagnosing and categorizing femoral neck stress fractures in athletes. These fractures result from repetitive mechanical loading, affecting trabecular structure. Various risk factors include hormonal imbalances and hip geometry. Although radiographs are initial diagnostic tools, MR imaging is the gold standard, distinguishing between stress reactions and fractures. Treatment involves surgical fixation, whereas nonsurgical methods for less severe fractures have good results. Overall, comprehensive knowledge is essential

Hip hop dance is becoming increasingly popular. It is performed in a variety of environments and can be fused with other dance styles. There is limited research on this dance demographic. The object of this study was to record and assess the injury patterns and diagnoses of hip hop dancers who presented to a dancer injury clinic at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in London over a 5-year period. Of the 800 patients who attended the clinic, 73 (28 males, 45 females) identified themselves as hip hop dancers. The mean age of these dancers was 26.1 years (± 6.59 years). The majority

An athlete often presents to the rehabilitation specialist with either a nonspecific referral, such as "hip pain," or with a diagnosis of a more specific hip pathology. The highly skilled clinician is trained to look at the "linkage" between the trunk and all parts of the lower extremity. Why is the hip not transferring the load well? Where is the breakdown? The gluteus medius, pelvic stability, and supportive muscular slings are of great importance when optimizing the function of the hip. The hip is subjected to forces equal to multiples of the body weight and requires osseous, articular and

Neurologic injury often accompanies traumatic dislocation and fracture-dislocation of the hip. A review of the literature reveals an incidence of approximately 10% in adults and 5% in children. The sciatic nerve, usually the peroneal branch, is most often injured, and this complication can be seen after all types of posterior fracture-dislocations and simple posterior dislocations. The sciatic nerve can be acutely lacerated, stretched, or compressed, or later encased in heterotopic ossification. Neurologic examination at the time of injury often is difficult but is extremely important. Once a

The causative factors and the clinical course of symptoms related to nerve injury in total hip arthroplasty were evaluated in 34 patients who underwent surgery during the period from 1969 to 1981. The overall incidence of this complication was 0.6%, with an incidence of 1.0% during the first seven years and of 0.3% during the following six years of the study. Female patients, particularly those with congenital hip dislocation, appeared to be at higher risk of sustaining nerve injury. Pathogenetic mechanisms of nerve injury identified in 47% of the patients included lengthening and/or lateral d
