Skin testing with antigens from Histoplasma capsulatum, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (PPD-S), and atypical mycobacteria (PPD-B, PPD-G, PPD-Y, and PPD-platy) was carried out among six population groups in the Solomon Islands between 1968 and 1972. There was no positive reaction to histoplasmin among any of the groups, suggesting that histoplasmosis is not endemic in the Solomon Islands. This work was planned by taking into account all the knowledge accumulated from the immunological study of paracoccidioidomycosis. It aimed at comparing a polysaccharide antigen from Histoplasma capsulatum to a classic histoplasmin with the help of intradermal tests of delayed type of hypersensitivity. A skin test survey with paracoccidioidin and histoplasmin was conducted on 495 residents of Coari in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. Positive dermal reactions to paracoccidioidin and histoplasmin were seen, respectively, in 13.9% and 50.1% of the study subjects. Specific reaction to paracoccidioidin was observed in 1.6% of the individuals, and to histoplasmin in 37.8%.
