A rare cause of hoarseness in a young patient.

Syphilis is nowadays a rare cause of aortic aneurysms in developed countries. Commonly saccular, syphilitic aneurysms are frequently single, involving the ascending aorta and arch and are frequently asymptomatic unless large enough to cause symptoms due to compression of surrounding structures or death from rupture. An unusual cause of hoarseness in an elderly asthmatic.

Dysphonia in patients with bronchial asthma is generally ascribed to vocal-cord abnormalities or steroid myopathy secondary to inhaled corticosteroids. Herein, we report the case of a 55-year-old male patient - a diagnosed case of bronchial asthma being on inhaled corticosteroids - who presented with dysphonia and was diagnosed to be suffering from Aspergillus laryngotracheobronchitis.

Chronic voice hoarseness: when is it an emergency?

We report a 68-year-old man with chronic voice hoarseness, who presented to the emergency room with left-sided chest and hypochondrial pain. Chest radiograph showed a large mediastinal mass confirmed to be a thoracic aortic aneurysm by an emergent computed tomography scan. Examination and investigations of a patient with voice hoarseness and chest pain should focus on looking out for dissecting or leaking aneurysms, which may be catastrophic if missed.

Hoarseness Beyond Cancer: Laryngeal Presentation of Tuberculosis.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading infectious disease worldwide, with Ethiopia among the highest-burden countries. Laryngeal tuberculosis is rare, accounting for less than 1%-2% of TB cases and typically affects the posterior glottis and true vocal cords. However, atypical involvement of the subglottic region is uncommon and can closely resemble laryngeal carcinoma both clinically and radiologically, posing a significant diagnostic challenge. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 64-year-old man with a 1-year history of progressive hoarseness. Neck CT demonstrated asymmetric mucosal t…

Cardiovascular Hoarseness (Ortner's Syndrome): A Pictorial Review.

Ortner's syndrome, also known as cardiovocal syndrome, encompasses any cardiac or vascular process that affects the recurrent laryngeal nerve(s), subsequently leading to vocal cord palsy. Various causes of Ortner's syndrome have been described in the literature, which include but are not limited to aortic aneurysms, pulmonary hypertension, left atrial enlargement, and congenital cardiac disorders. We hereby present a pictorial review of the more commonly reported entities, which have been implicated in this syndrome. Ultimately, understanding the pathophysiology underlying Ortner's syndrome wi

Hoarseness as the initial presentation of multiple myeloma.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Myeloma of the thyroid cartilage is a rare but important differential diagnosis of a laryngeal mass. Although hoarseness as the initial presenting symptom in multiple myeloma is extremely rare, a clinician should always consider it. ABSTRACT: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant plasma cell disorder characterized by an uncontrolled proliferation of monoclonal plasma cells. Although the clinical presentation at diagnosis can be quite variable, thyroid cartilage infiltration in MM is rare. Here we discuss a 65-year-old Caucasian male presenting to the ENT doctor with conti…

The role of imaging in the evaluation of hoarseness: A review.

Hoarseness is a common symptom indicating an abnormal change in the quality of voice and has a lifetime prevalence of around 30%. There are multiple causes of hoarseness, ranging from acute laryngitis, chronic laryngitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, functional dysphonia due to vocal overuse or abuse, vocal cord paralysis (VCP), to various pathologies and masses in the larynx. A detailed history and thorough physical examination, and in many cases, laryngoscopy by a clinician are the initial steps in its management. Laryngoscopy should be considered if hoarseness persists for more than 2 weeks wi…
