Horticultural wastes as sustainable alternative feed resources for livestock: processing technologies, nutritional value, and animal performance.

The rapid expansion of the horticulture sector has resulted in the generation of substantial quantities of fruit and vegetable waste, posing environmental and waste disposal challenges. The improper disposal of these residues may contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, environmental pollution, and loss of potentially valuable nutrients. Concurrently, the rising cost and increasing demand for conventional feed resources have intensified the exploration of sustainable and economical alternatives for livestock and poultry feeding systems. This review examines the potential of horticultural waste …

Parasitoid Diversity and Biological Control of Bactericera tremblayi and Bactericera trigonica (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) in Horticultural Crops in Spain.

Biological control using parasitoids is a key strategy for managing psyllid pests in horticultural crops. This study investigated the parasitoid complex associated with Bactericera tremblayi and Bactericera trigonica, two economically important psyllid pests of leek and carrot, respectively, in Castile and León (Spain). Nymphs of both psyllid species were collected and reared to assess parasitism; emerging parasitoids were identified morphologically and by DNA barcoding. A total of 969 parasitized nymphs were collected, from which 291 parasitoids emerged, including Tamarixia pronomus, Tamarixi

Low-cost monocular RGB-based 3D structural mapping for horticultural plants via semantic scene completion.

Precision agriculture increasingly relies on detailed structural information, such as canopy height and canopy volume, to enhance crop health monitoring and operational safety. However, existing methods based on costly LiDAR or RGB-D sensors are often impractical for large-scale deployment in dynamic and unstructured horticultural environments. Furthermore, conventional 2D segmentation and SLAM-based pipelines typically generate sparse, geometrically inconsistent semantic maps which are insufficient for actionable structural analysis in agricultural applications. To overcome these limitations,

From green waste to horticultural resources: A novel approach to quantifying greenhouse gas emission factors for decision-making.

A substantial amount of green waste is incinerated, while the horticultural sector faces a severe shortage of resources. To promote the use of materials derived from green waste in horticulture, more concise and robust evidence is essential to guide policy decisions in waste management and horticulture sectors. This study focused on greenhouse gas (GHG) budgets and aimed to clarify GHG emission factors through disposal or recycling methods for mowed levee weeds. In addition, the quality and cultivability of the biochar and compost were evaluated. GHG budgets for carbonization and composting of…

"It made me feel brighter in myself"- The health and well-being impacts of a residential front garden horticultural intervention.

Residential gardens make up 30% of urban space in the UK, yet unlike many other green space typologies, their role in the health and well-being agenda has largely been overlooked. A horticultural intervention introduced ornamental plants to 38 previously bare front gardens (≈ 10 m2) within an economically deprived region of North England, UK. Measures of perceived stress and diurnal cortisol profiles (as an indicator of health status) were taken pre- and post-intervention (over 3 months). Residents reported significant decreases in perceived stress post-intervention. This finding was aligned w

An outbreak of Pontiac fever due to Legionella longbeachae serogroup 2 found in potting mix in a horticultural nursery in New Zealand.

Previous outbreaks of Pontiac fever have invariably been associated with water droplet spread of Legionella spp. In January 2007 three workers from a horticultural nursery were admitted to hospital with non-pneumonic legionellosis. Investigations showed that a working party of ten people had been exposed to aerosolized potting mix; nine of these workers met the case definition for Pontiac fever. The presence of genetically indistinguishable Legionella longbeachae serogroup 2 was demonstrated in clinical specimens from two hospitalized workers and in the potting mix to which they had been expos

Evolutionary and functional divergence of MYB regulatory networks in flavonoid biosynthesis across Poaceae, non-Poaceae monocots, and eudicot horticultural plants.

Horticultural plants synthesize diverse flavonoids (e.g. anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, and flavonols) that shape key agronomic traits, including flower pigmentation, fruit flavor, stress resilience, and nutritional value. MYB transcription factors (TFs), particularly R2R3-MYBs, serve as core regulators of flavonoid biosynthesis; their functional divergence and distinct regulatory mechanisms drive the interspecific diversity of flavonoid-related traits. This review systematically summarizes the evolutionary and functional divergence of flavonoid-regulatory R2R3-MYBs across monocot (including

Absence of Azole Antifungal Resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus Isolated from Root Vegetables Harvested from UK Arable and Horticultural Soils.

The emergence of azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus (ARAf) complicates the treatment of aspergillosis and can nearly double the mortality from invasive aspergillosis (IA). ARAf has been isolated from many different environmental sites and indoor environments and thus presents a significant risk for susceptible patients. Local surveillance of environmental ARAf can guide antifungal prescribing and improve patient outcomes. In this study, seventy-four soils samples collected from the surface of a variety of root vegetables from farm shops and private gardens covering a wide geographical area

H2S in Horticultural Plants: Endogenous Detection by an Electrochemical Sensor, Emission by a Gas Detector, and Its Correlation with L-Cysteine Desulfhydrase (LCD) Activity.

H2S has acquired great attention in plant research because it has signaling functions under physiological and stress conditions. However, the direct detection of endogenous H2S and its potential emission is still a challenge in higher plants. In order to achieve a comparative analysis of the content of H2S among different plants with agronomical and nutritional interest including pepper fruits, broccoli, ginger, and different members of the genus Allium such as garlic, leek, Welsh and purple onion, the endogenous H2S and its emission was determined using an ion-selective microelectrode and a s

Horticultural therapy, nutrition and post-traumatic stress disorder in post-military veterans: developing non-pharmaceutical interventions to complement existing therapeutic approaches.

Non-pharmaceutical interventions for veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder are becoming a more popular way to address some of the social and personal needs identified by this group. Horticultural therapy or growing and eating food together provides several ways to increase mood, improve nutritional status, reduce loneliness and reduce the physical health impacts of mental illnesses such as post-traumatic stress disorder. In this paper we will discuss some of the issues people living with post-traumatic stress disorder might face. We will also provide an overview of the therapeuti
