OBJECTIVE: An analysis of airborne nicotine measurements collected in 49 low-income, multi-unit residences across the Greater Boston Area.
METHODS: Nicotine concentrations were determined using passive monitors placed in homes over a one-week sampling period and air exchange rates (AER) were sampled using the perfluorocarbon tracer technique. Residents were surveyed through a questionnaire about smoking behaviour and a visual inspection was conducted to collect information on housing characteristics contributing to secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. Using a mass balance model to account for the…

BACKGROUND: Much research has shown that the homeless have higher rates of substance abuse problems than housed populations and that substance abuse increases individuals' vulnerability to homelessness. However, the effects of housing policies on drug users' access to housing have been understudied to date. This paper will look at the "unofficial" housing policies that affect drug users' access to housing.
METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted with 65 active users of heroin and cocaine at baseline, 3 and 6 months. Participants were purposively sampled to reflect a variety of housing …

Recovery housing is an important resource for many in their recovery from alcohol and other drug use disorders. Yet providers of recovery housing face a number of challenges. Many of these challenges are rooted in stigma and bias about recovery housing. The ability to describe the service and purported mechanisms of action vis-a-vis an overarching framework, approach, or orientation could also go a long way in adding credence to recovery housing as a service delivery mechanism. Several aspects of social model recovery are often explicitly built or organically reflected in how recovery housing …

Homeless women veterans face unique vulnerability and significant mental health needs; it is important for their housing to include gender-specific safety measures. Providers of supportive housing for veterans can take important steps to accommodate the women they serve, including providing separate housing facilities or areas for women. More than half of all homeless women veterans were sexually assaulted during their military service, and many exhibit mental health disabilities as a result, which provides a strong legal basis for requiring gender-based accommodations. While significant progr…

The housing status of persons with HIV/AIDS is a central issue in their care and prognosis. We conducted eight focus groups to explore the housing needs of special populations of persons with HIV/AIDS in New York State; these populations included substance users, ex-offenders, persons with documented histories of homelessness, and rural dwellers/migrant workers. For the focus groups, 52 participants were recruited from the clientele of health and social service agencies. A major theme was the potent effect that housing situations had on participants' health. Participants frequently attributed …

Permanent supportive housing is an effective intervention for stably housing most people experiencing homelessness and mental illness who have complex support needs. However, high-risk behaviours and challenges are prevalent among this population and have the potential to seriously harm health and threaten housing tenures. Yet, the research on the relationship between high-risk issues and housing stability in permanent supportive housing has not been previously synthesized. This rapid review aimed to identify the housing-related outcomes of high-risk behaviours and challenges in permanent supp…

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a widespread and devastating phenomenon resulting in a myriad of long-term consequences for survivors and their children. IPV victimization not only has negative health and economic consequences, it has also been linked to homelessness and housing instability. In response, the Domestic Violence Housing First (DVHF) model is being used in some domestic violence (DV) agencies to help survivors attain safe and stable housing. The model includes using individualized advocacy and/or flexible funding to help survivors meet these goals. Using a longitudinal, quasi-e…

The growing social problem of homelessness and precarious housing situations has negative effects on psychological outcomes and quality of life (QoL) for mentally ill people. Despite a large body of research on QoL among homeless mentally ill people, research on housing satisfaction as a specific QoL domain and important outcome variable for treatment interventions is scarce. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to investigate housing satisfaction among psychiatric patients in various housing situations. Out of 1,251 patients that were treated in the targeted facilities during the admi…

AIMS: Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) may improve homeless adults' mental health via housing stabilization and/or improved relational factors, however, the role of housing and social networks on PSH residents' mental health change is minimally understood.
METHODS: Interviews were conducted with a baseline sample of adults experiencing homelessness ( N = 421), across their initial year in PSH (3-months, 6-months, and 12-months). Generalized linear mixed models assessed changes in positive past-month psychiatric disability screenings (Modified-Colorado Symptom Index [MCSI]) and probable post…

Family homelessness has become a growing public health problem over the last 3 decades. Despite this trend, few studies have explored the effectiveness of housing interventions and housing and service interventions. The purpose of this systematic review is to appraise and synthesize evidence on effective interventions addressing family homelessness. We searched 10 major electronic databases from 2007 to 2013. Empirical studies investigating effectiveness of housing interventions and housing and service interventions for American homeless families regardless of publication status were eligible …

Both direct placement in supported community housing and pre-treatment with time-limited residential treatment are used as approaches to helping chronically homeless adults exit from homelessness but relative effectiveness and cost remains untested. The current observational study utilized data from a national, multi-site housing project to determine whether clients who receive residential treatment or transitional housing before being placed into independent housing achieve superior outcomes than clients who are immediately placed into independent housing, and whether they incur greater healt…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Prevalence of essential tremor (ET), one of the most common movement disorders, has not been properly evaluated amongst heterogeneous population in India.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional epidemiological study on the prevalence of ET in a randomly stratified population in the metropolitan city of Kolkata (erstwhile Calcutta), India, by a field team headed by a specialist doctor. A two-stage house-to-house survey was carried out with a validated screening instrument.
RESULTS: A population of 52377 was screened and a total of 184 cases of ET were identified as pe

AIMS AND CONTEXT: This paper reports the evaluation of the Doorway program (2015-18) in Melbourne, Australia. Doorway extends the original Housing First (HF) model in providing housing support to people with precarious housing at-risk of homelessness with Serious and Persistent Mental Illnesses (SPMIs) receiving care within Victoria's public mental health system. Doorway participants source and choose properties through the open rental market, and receive rental subsidies, assistance, advocacy and brokerage support through their Housing and Recovery Worker (HRW). The aim of this study is to es…

This study aims to investigate whether a working alliance could represent a potential mechanism that explains the effectiveness of housing services in terms of user recovery, comparing the Housing First (HF) model with Traditional Services (TS). This study included 59 homeless service users in Italy (29 = HF; 30 = TS). Recovery was assessed upon entering the study (T0) and after 10 months (T1). Results indicate that participants inserted in HF services were more likely to report stronger working alliances with social service providers at T0 that, in turn, was directly associated with higher le…

The housing first (HF) model for individuals experiencing homelessness and mental illness differs by design from traditional models that require consumers to achieve "housing readiness" by meeting program or treatment prerequisites in transitional housing settings prior to permanent housing placement. Given a growing body of evidence for its favorable outcomes and cost effectiveness, HF is increasingly seen as an alternative to and argument against these traditional programs. As such, it is important that the elements and implementation challenges of the HF model be clearly understood and arti…

Homelessness and unstable housing have been associated with HIV risk behavior and poorer health among persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), yet prior research has not tested causal associations. This paper describes the challenges, methods, and baseline sample of the Housing and Health Study, a longitudinal, multi-site, randomized controlled trial investigating the effects of providing immediate rental housing assistance to PLWHA who were homeless or at severe risk of homelessness. Primary outcomes included HIV disease progression, medical care access and utilization, treatment adherence, ment…

Public housing authorities (PHAs) apply federal drug-related eligibility and termination criteria but retain discretion in specifying key provisions. We reviewed 36 written policy documents from 19 PHAs serving overdose-impacted metropolitan and micropolitan jurisdictions in 18 states and Washington, D.C. Jurisdictions were selected purposively based on local overdose rates and metropolitan or micropolitan classification. We coded six components spanning eviction and criminal activity lookback periods; definitions of current drug use; termination standards; and whether substance use disorder (…

While government-assisted housing programs primarily aim to reduce financial burden for low-income older adults, depression and anxiety rates remain elevated among residents, suggesting that housing environments shape mental health through pathways beyond economic relief. This study examined how housing environments influence mental health among older adults through a socioecological framework. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 16 older adults (ages 60-86) residing in government-assisted housing in rural Alabama between July and September 2024. Using hybrid thematic and framework an…
