Unusual multiscale mechanics of biomimetic nanoparticle hydrogels.

Viscoelastic properties are central for gels and other materials. Simultaneously, high storage and loss moduli are difficult to attain due to their contrarian requirements to chemical structure. Biomimetic inorganic nanoparticles offer a promising toolbox for multiscale engineering of gel mechanics, but a conceptual framework for their molecular, nanoscale, mesoscale, and microscale engineering as viscoelastic materials is absent. Here we show nanoparticle gels with simultaneously high storage and loss moduli from CdTe nanoparticles. Viscoelastic figure of merit reaches 1.83 MPa exceeding that

Application of Hydrogels in Cartilage Tissue Engineering.

BACKGROUND: Cartilage has limited ability for self-repairing, prompting the search for cartilage substitutes that can repair cartilage defects. Hydrogels have attracted attention as cartilage substitutes, since their mechanical properties, swelling ability and lubricating behavior are similar to extracellular matrix of articular cartilage. Hydrogels can be of natural, synthetic or hybrid origin, and hydrogels can encapsulate stem cells and/or be loaded with growth factors to promote cell differentiation into a chondrogenic phenotype. OBJECTIVE AND RESULTS: This review summarizes basic researc…

Injectable bioadhesive hydrogels with innate antibacterial properties.

Surgical site infections cause significant postoperative morbidity and increased healthcare costs. Bioadhesives used to fill surgical voids and support wound healing are typically devoid of antibacterial activity. Here we report novel syringe-injectable bioadhesive hydrogels with inherent antibacterial properties prepared from mixing polydextran aldehyde and branched polyethylenimine. These adhesives kill both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, while sparing human erythrocytes. An optimal composition of 2.5 wt% oxidized dextran and 6.9 wt% polyethylenimine sets within seconds forming a …

Years-long stability of X10 expansion microscopy hydrogels.

Expansion microscopy (ExM) is developing rapidly to explore biological structures, both towards nanoscale imaging and the wider-scale analysis of cells and tissues. ExM is based on embedding samples in swellable hydrogels, which then expand to enable superior microscopy performance with conventional microscopes. However, imaging precision is limited by the stability of the hydrogels, which are typically regarded as less robust than conventional samples. Here, we show that hydrogels based on N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) remain stable for several years, without a perceivable loss of structure.…

Mechanically Active Contractile Hydrogels for Skin Wound Repair.

Polymer hydrogels have been widely explored for wound repair, yet conventional designs remain passive barriers with limited mechanical intervention. Contractile hydrogels address this gap by undergoing network densification and macroscopic shrinkage, which can be converted into wound-edge traction through interfacial adhesion. This review classifies contractile hydrogels into temperature-responsive, pH-regulated, intermolecular-interaction-driven, and solvent-mediated systems according to their dominant contraction mechanisms. The transduction of contraction-derived mechanical cues into bioche…

Hydraulic Pressure-Programmed Molecular Transport in Tough Hydrogels.

Molecular transport through polymer networks, including hydrogels and biological matrices, underpins many applications ranging from water filtration and gas separation to drug delivery and cell culture. Conventional strategies for regulating transport in polymer networks primarily focus on tuning molecular diffusion through network mesh size and polymer chemistry, whereas convection is often considered negligible because nanoscale-mesh networks typically exhibit low fluid permeability. Although hydraulic pressure is a well-established driving force for convection in porous media, extending pre…
