Cooperative asymmetric catalysis with hydrogen chloride (HCl) and chiral dual-hydrogen-bond donors (HBDs) is applied successfully to highly enantioselective Prins cyclization reactions of a wide variety of simple alkenyl aldehydes. The optimal chiral catalysts were designed to withstand the strongly acidic reaction conditions and were found to induce rate accelerations of 2 orders of magnitude over reactions catalyzed by HCl alone. We propose that the combination of strong mineral acids and chiral hydrogen-bond-donor catalysts may represent a general strategy for inducing enantioselectivity in…

Through direct addition of inorganic zinc ions into the solution of indium phosphide quantum dots (InP QDs) at ambient environment, we here present a facile but effective method to modify InP QDs for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from hydrogen sulfide (H2S). X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopic images demonstrate that zinc ions have no significant influence on the crystal structure and morphology of InP QDs, while X-ray photoemission spectra and UV-Vis diffuse and reflectance spectra indicate that zinc ions mainly adsorbed on the surface of InP QDs. Photocatalyt…

Herein, we demonstrated the first iron-catalysed chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of maleimides to succinimides using water as the hydrogen source and zinc as the reductant. A series of functionalized succinimides were obtained in excellent yield (41 examples, up to 95% yield). Preliminary mechanistic and deuterium-labelling studies including kinetic experiments were performed to establish the chemoselective hydrogenation.

The hydrogen (H) spillover on the catalyst surface is crucial in the CO2 hydrogenation reaction, but its effects on product selectivity have been rarely investigated. Herein, we reveal the H-spillover mediated regulatory role of oxide supports, which changed the CO2 hydrogenation selectivity on In2O3-based catalysts. By replacing the supports from TiO2 to ZrO2, the primary product of CO2 hydrogenation experiences a significant shift from carbon monoxide (95.6%) to methanol (84.2%). In situ characterization and theoretical modeling evidence that the degree of H-spillover influences the distribu…

We present a simple and efficient photocatalytic method for the transfer hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds using alcohol as the hydrogen source and low-cost decatungstate as the photocatalyst. Our approach operates under mild and ambient conditions and demonstrates broad substrate compatibility, including alkyl, aryl, and heteroatom-substituted alkenes, alkynes, azo compounds and nitroarenes. To our knowledge, this study represents the first instance of using tungsten-based catalysts for the photocatalytic transfer hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds. Notably, the catalytic system, emp…

Hydrogenation is widely used in the synthesis of industrial chemicals, yet its reliance on pressurized H2 poses safety risks and contributes to carbon emissions. Transfer hydrogenation offers an attractive alternative, but it remains constrained by the high cost of typical hydrogen donors. Polyethylene (PE), a major contributor to persistent plastic wastes, is a hydrogen-rich polymer capable of releasing hydrogen during catalytic deconstruction. Here, we propose the use of PE as an inexpensive hydrogen donor for the selective transfer hydrogenation of C─O bonds. We evaluate the transfer hydrog…

The reaction mechanism of the CH3OH synthesis by the hydrogenation of CO2 on Cu catalysts is unclear because of the challenge in experimentally detecting reaction intermediates formed by the hydrogenation of adsorbed formate (HCOOa). Thus, the objective of this study is to clarify the reaction mechanism of the CH3OH synthesis by establishing the kinetic natures of intermediates formed by the hydrogenation of adsorbed HCOOa on Cu(111). We exposed HCOOa on Cu(111) to atomic hydrogen at low temperatures of 200-250 K and observed the species using infrared reflection absorption (IRA) spectroscopy …

Reactions of ferric horseradish peroxidase with hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen peroxide were studied as a function of pressure. Activation volumes are small and differ in sign (delta V = 1.7 +/- 0.5 ml/mol for peroxidase + HCN and -1.5 +/- 0.5 ml/mol for peroxidase + H2O2). The temperature dependence of cyanide binding to horseradish peroxidase was also determined. A comparison is made of relevant parameters for cyanide binding and compound I formation.

The rational modulation of band structures in organic semiconductors is central to advancing photocatalytic performance but remains challenging for hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) due to their structural sensitivity to the modification of organic building units (OBUs). Here, based on the stable mesoporous framework HOF-102, π-conjugation-extended and donor-acceptor-tuned OBUs were predesigned by substituting the steric naphthalene units with benzene-vinyl derivatives bearing ─H, ─CH3, or ─CN groups. Through a shape-fitted π─π stacking strategy, three mesoporous HOFs isoreticular with…

Hydrogen release from silicon-hydrogen systems spans a field ranging from extended silicon materials to discrete molecular compounds. Across these regimes, Si─H activation and H2 evolution arise from the interplay of structure, coordination environment, and access to reactive geometries. In extended silicon systems, hydrogen release is governed by structure-dependent recombinative desorption processes. Zintl phases bridge solid-state and molecular silicon chemistry by enabling transfer of polyanionic silicon units into solution, thereby providing access to discrete Si─H reactivity. In molecula…

The role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and its relationship with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in brassinosteroid-induced stomatal closure in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. were investigated. In the present study, 2,4-epibrassinolide (EBR, a bioactive BR) induced stomatal closure in the wild type, the effects were inhibited by H2S scavenger and synthesis inhibitors, and H2O2 scavengers and synthesis inhibitor. However, EBR failed to close the stomata of mutants Atl-cdes, Atd-cdes, AtrbohF and AtrbohD/F. Additionally, EBR induced increase of L-/D-cysteine desulfhydrase (L-/D-CDes) activity, H2S produc…

BACKGROUND: Both hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) are separately regarded as a highly reactive molecule involved in root morphogenesis. In this report, corresponding causal link governing lateral root formation was investigated.
METHODS: By using pharmacological, anatomic, and molecular approaches, evidence presented here revealed the molecular mechanism underlying tomato lateral root development triggered by H2S.
RESULTS: A H2S donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) triggered the accumulation of H2O2, the up-regulation of RBOH1 transcript, and thereafter tomato lateral root for…

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a physiological mediator with various roles, including neuro-modulation, vascular tone regulation, and cytoprotection against ischemia-reperfusion injury, angiogenesis, and oxygen sensing. Hydrogen polysulfide (H2S n ), which possesses a higher number of sulfur atoms than H2S, recently emerged as a potential signaling molecule that regulates the activity of ion channels, a tumor suppressor, transcription factors, and protein kinases. Some of the previously reported effects of H2S are now attributed to the more potent H2S n . H2S n is produced by 3-mercaptopyruvate sul…

A chelating ligand formed by deprotonation of 2-(2'-pyridyl)-2-propanol stabilizes a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry in a 16e(-) d(6) 5-coordinate iridium complex with the alkoxide acting as a π donor. Ambiphilic species such as AcOH bearing both nucleophilic and electrophilic functionality form adducts with the unsaturated iridium complex which contain strong intramolecular O···H···O hydrogen bonds that involve the basic alkoxide oxygen. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the isolated cations reproduce with high accuracy the geometrical features obtained via X-ray diffrac…

The metallization of hydrogen is a prerequisite for the emergence of superconducting properties, along with those of hydrides. Chemical precompression has enabled a class of high-transition-temperature superconductors based on hydrogen-rich hydrides, whereas direct metallization of molecular hydrides remains challenging. In this study, we demonstrate the metallization of hydrogen confined within fixed two-dimensional graphene channels, which provide a nanoscale environment for effective compression. The confined hydrogen forms compressed molecular hydrides whose intermolecular H-H separations …

Significance: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a multitasking potent regulator that facilitates plant growth, development, and responses to environmental stimuli. Recent Advances: The important beneficial effects of H2S in various aspects of plant physiology aroused the interest of this chemical for agriculture. Protein cysteine persulfidation has been recognized as the main reduction-oxidation (redox) regulatory mechanism of H2S signaling. An increasing number of studies, including large-scale proteomic analyses and functional characterizations, have revealed that H2S-mediated persulfidations direct…

The lack of safe and efficient hydrogen storage is a major bottleneck for large-scale application of hydrogen energy. Reversible hydrogen storage of light-weight metal hydrides with high theoretical gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen density is one ideal solution but requires extremely high operating temperature with large energy input. Herein, taking MgH2 as an example, a concept is demonstrated to achieve solar-driven reversible hydrogen storage of metal hydrides via coupling the photothermal effect and catalytic role of Cu nanoparticles uniformly distributed on the surface of MXene nanoshe…

Block copolymers (BCPs) that can self-assemble into particles and be triggered by disease-specific molecules such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) have the potential to impact on drug delivery, decreasing off-target toxicities while increasing drug efficacy. However, the incorporation of H2S-responsive aryl azides into BCPs for self-assembly has been limited by heat, light, and radical sensitivities. In this study, a robust activator regenerated by the electron-transfer atom-transfer radical polymerization reaction was used to synthesize aryl-azide-containing BCPs under ambient conditions. Conditions…
